Mike, is not a production turner. That is obvious. For me, a bowl that size on my lathe, turning at about 2,000 rpm is maybe 3 to 4 minutes. If I had 2 good knees and hips, I would love to try a spring pole lathe, and a treadle lathe. Both would be fun.
Brilliant fun! The turn-around is where the treadler moved ahead. If the power turner had been more familiar w/ the chuck (it wasn't his lathe) he would've finished much sooner & refined his bowl properly too.
The thing is this was a race to make just 1 bowl. In an 8 hour shift the treadler wouldn't be able to maintain the pace he had here. I have a treadle lathe, they're great fun & real work is done on them but motorized lathes replaced treadles in the production shop for a reason.
Mike was crap. Robins bowl was excellent in shape and quality and the power turner's was worse than my bowl and i'm 13! That mike looks like Father Jack from father ted!
Well I think that is rather unkind. The idea of this event and the video was fun and entertainment. Mike and I were both there demonstrating our craft to help encourage local use of local woods. To be fair Mike was using a small portable lathe and whilst he is a professional turner he is not a full time bowlturner. Can you turn a bowl is less than 10 minutes?
im 15 ive turned a few bowls and under good sucumstances i can turn on it about 10 to 12 minuites otherwise about 30. and i give props to both of ya, what type of lathe were you using and the type of wood?
I love this video, nice job Robin. I met Alistair, the guy who was doing the introductions and countdown, a few weeks back in Silkstone. He was carving some pigs with a chainsaw and did a great job. He mentioned he was involved in this, hope you're doing Ok Alistair! Gonna have to try pole lathe turning at some time, I may have to come down to yours and get some tips. I could open my own Pole Lathe Rurning School afterwards too...... :D
I was rooting for the foot turner myself. But the guy on the power lathe wasn't all that good. A production turner would have had two bowls out in the time he took to do one. Obviously the foot powered turner was more experienced. Better bowl as well. I still love the skill and simplicity of the earlier method. I've done both and would sell off my power lathe in a heartbeat if I could get Robin's results.
I'll take the power over foot any day. (unless for some reason we loose all electricity). If you had a guy not fumbling around with the Chuck, and had a better idea of what he seemed to be doing. Power would when out every day. Exactly what tools were they using? The same?
Both craftsmen in their own medium of course but I would have to give the ribbon to Robin. The inside of his bowl was much deeper and a better shape IMO. If he (Robin) had made it as shallow as Mike's then he would have been finished a bit before him most likely.

As Pavel Checkov says in the novel Uhura's Song, "Primitive does not mean stupid!"
Or in this case- of lesser quality!

Hi Rob,
like the vid, and especially the very end view of the bowls with White Stripes playing.
Cheers,
