I have a 1997 chevy cavalier 5 speed. It runs great but the clutch went out. In order to replace the clutch back to normal to drive again, What all do I need to replace? ONLY the clutch disc? or; the disc, flywheel, pressure plate, and release bearing? PLEASE HELP ME! someone reply,..thank you
Back in the day drivers died from clutch blow ups from parts flying through the floor like a grenede . Even if the driver was not hurt with today's sfi blow proof clutch bellhousing the driver still had a concushion .
i seen this happen before , very dangerous . a 10second vette did this right on the starting line at hawaii raceway park , parts of his fly wheel was flying from under his car .
@Storm7289 even better veyron is a shit car but you can enjoy it on the street this some fucking funny car so you can drive maybe 5 min and its still some shitty V8 which is probably american made aka garbage
@xstr33tr4cerx such a sad fanboy. ford makes a v8 that dynos at 416rwhp (484hp) and that car beat an audi r8 v8 around laguna seca. they have broken the world record for the most powerful OEM production v8 in the 2013 gt500 (650hp). chevy has the fastest time around the nurburgring with the zr1 and makes good engines using very old OHV technology. stop being such a fanboy and appreciate all cars gtfo the domestic hater boat
@Storm7289 um no i dont give a shit im not a hater cause im not jealous of domestics in any way they suck they ugly they have they sound like shit and have the worst handling let alone bad suspension ive been under a lot of domestics at my shop and they have such stupid designs that break faster than you can cum
@Storm7289 ok so stock 68 V8 vs a built up 302 from like what is that 67' or something STFU man same goes for when someone has a built rb26 skyline and smokes your shit muscle car the difference is the muscle car is built too just being dumb plz
@Storm7289 dude i fucking work on cars for a living but panels get weaker and easier to dent and bend most new cars run throttle by wire and electronic steering racks now so they are super unsafe. the thing with the fucking prius was because of throttle by wire. and the newer the car the uglier it is engines are so wired up now why bother building a car unless you got enough to buy a lambo cause tuning these new shits is expensive lol and me having a miata is nothing funny its a popular car
@xstr33tr4cerx the thing with "the fucking prius" was also not caused by throttle by wire but stupid people trying to cash in on a non-existent problem or retards bunching their floor mats up around the throttle. electric power steering is an assist; should it malfunction it creates either very funny, 'notchy' steering wheel feel or no assist at all, the latter being exactly the same thing older cars experienced if a power steering belt broke.
@Hawk7886 few of the new cars i would 2011 up and cars that haven't come out yet use electronic steering wheels like literal dude think of a wireless control that's what i meant by electronic steering i already know about the steering assist systems out there and its proven that the throttle by wire theory is true because when a ground go bad(one out of many possibilities) the ECU reboots and where ever the the throttle was prior to the reboot is where the throttle stays until complete
@xstr33tr4cerx do you even read what you type? In a fly-by-wire system, if the signal to the throttle position motor is lost, it closes the throttle plate. Interrupt the signal from the ECM, throttle closes. The prius case was nothing more than driver error and lies - in the event that ANY vehicle encounters a race condition, you can avoid crashing into shit by simply pushing the damn gear selector up one click to neutral - zero brain cells required and doable in a second or less.
@Hawk7886 one read what i said again and try to think but dont hurt yourself and the prius if it was driver error or what ever you want to call it i just wonder why is a guy racing a prius with his family in it? -_-
Once you get into the pro-stock and other higher classes they don't run Auto's in the cars. they use a Lenco or some other style of sequential manual trans. Then the clutches are setup by timers etc to engage a certain amount at a certain time. This way they can be adjusted where as a TQ converter won't be able to be adjusted per run like they would need to be.
Did the driver got injured? My old car, with standard low power engine had a fault in manual transmission shifter which caused it one day to lock two gears on in the same time, completely locking the transmission. Fortunately it happened on city speeds just leaving trafficlights. There were literally nothing left of clutch and pressure assembly. Just some more revs and the bellhousing wouldn't take it. That was unbelievable mess!
There is a shield around the clutch, but sparks still get in. The driver has a fireproof suit on so sparks aren't going to hurt you too much. The shield is there to prevent pieces of the clutch from hitting the driver's feet on each side of the transmission. The pieces are moving pretty fast and can chop off a toe or rip some deep cuts in your legs. As long as it does that, a little smoke and a coupla sparks are OK.
It's official. If I see one more "v-tec just kicked in" quote at the top of the highest rated comments...
I'm going to kill! I mean this.
It stopped being funny after the first five hundred quintillion times I heard it. The last four hundred quadrillion times has just been overkill... seriously
Don't you think that in a drag car when you see smoke filling the cab you would just call it and shut the car down? I mean with it running on nitro-methane I wouldn't want any explosions besides those intended...lol
Yea but the flywheel bolts onto the side of the block usually and the clutch goes into the transmission and the when you bolt the trans up to the block the flywheel and clutch meet up as to what happened here?? catastrophic clutch failure and i dont think he knew it was coming you can smell a fucked up clutch from a mile away. If that was clutch smoke coming up through the cabin he would have known it. And not all clutches have calbles most nowadays are hydraulic driven
I like how people are commenting on ballistic blankets and scatter shields. lolol
This isn't your typical street car or 500hp bracket car...... this car has a "clutch can" (bell housing) that is rated to contain a complete clutch failure by itself. These are typically made from titanium and cost roughly $4000. Google "Trick Titanium" if you don't believe me.
@vhodoo987 that is for the launch control or something like that, the clutch is used to turn the power of the engine into movement of the car, in top drag race cars the clutch is very abused, and if you use and abused clutch at high rpms it will blow like we've seen now
@spxlazy and on auto transmissions there are a series of clutch disks between metal disks inside the transmission and the transmission fluid puts pressure on different series of clutches inside the transmission with each gear. -- Rebuilt my friends camaro's TH350 transmission and it had like 5 clutch disks for each gear, had to machine it to fit 7 for each gear.
@tfarkL Even though the clutch pedal is engaged (which renders the clutch disengaged) there still is rotation and some force going on, this clutch was probably just defective, or maybe the driver rested is foot out a touch which caused the clutch to not start to engage the drive too hard but enough to cause enough heat and friction, then as soon as you drop the motherload of engine power through the clutch that is already too hot (and it looked like this engine had heaps) it causes problems.
@tfarkL sounds like the disc completely gave way and blew up the clutch assembly... and from the flames and sparks looks like he blew it all straight thru the bell housing too
@tfarkL whats happening is the clutch disk is slipping and creating a ton of heat because of all the friction, and once he really gets on the power the heat and rotational inertia are too much for it.
Hell that was close. To who ever the driver may be, your lucky that non of the shrapnel hit you. Here's a tip for you and other racers. I don't know if you knew, but go get yourself an industrial cirgularsaw blade that's the right size and still in tip condition, go to an engineering workshop and ask them to mill a custom clutch. Those cirgularblades are tough and can take alot of punch. But this is only a comment from me that should be saying the least.
@SpiritsoftheWolf arguing about who makes shittier transmissions, gm or dodge is like arguing about what feels better, getting punched in the eye or kicked in the balls.
@cw147 Ahh. the perfect analogy for the chevrolet corvette. a beautiful looking car that treats its driver to a complimentary knuckle and ocular cavity party, all while falling apart in the process. for no extra charge!
Voyon donn ! :p
@Hankola that was clutch dust, and yea, it would. It started as soon as the revs came up and that really signifies a pressure plate malfunction or some other clutch issue that probably wasn't going to end well.
I reckon theyve set the clutch too tight and he should have shut it down with the amount of dust coming in the cabin.

@12345tou, nahh a dodge, dodge has more transmission failures
SpiritsoftheWolf 1 year ago
@SpiritsoftheWolf arguing about who makes shittier transmissions, gm or dodge is like arguing about what feels better, getting punched in the eye or kicked in the balls.

@SpiritsoftheWolf Hey dont give me that. I'm on your side.
I wasnt saying "you're stupid for picking an opposing point,"
I'm saying "chevy trannys and dodge trannys suck so much, there's no use in pointing out which one sucks slightly more".

@lebensraummetal, sorry, thought you was on the opposite side

@lebensraummetal I prefer getting punched in the eye becuase you see pretty colours aferwards.

@cw147 Ahh. the perfect analogy for the chevrolet corvette. a beautiful looking car that treats its driver to a complimentary knuckle and ocular cavity party, all while falling apart in the process. for no extra charge!

If I saw smoke rising from the gearbox, wouldn't that be a sign to shut off the engine?
Hankola 1 year ago
@Hankola that was clutch dust, and yea, it would. It started as soon as the revs came up and that really signifies a pressure plate malfunction or some other clutch issue that probably wasn't going to end well.
