nice to hear u guys are planning a grappling tournament. under which rules u think this would run: freestyle, greco, judo, submisson grappling, catchwrestling or some cool mixup?!
maybe with dagger on the ground or some other crazy shit :-P
@Flow1987@Flow1987 Thank you! Rulesets for a HEMA grappling tournament are discussed right now by an international group of practitioners at this webforum: medievalwrestling . proboards . com Such a tournament at Swordfish would be with rules made specifically for HEMA grappling, not simply copied from Judo, submission wrestling or any other martial arts. Hope to see you at Swordfish 2012!
Would you guys ever expand your event to include weapons and styles from all over the world? It would be highly entertaining to see a weapon-based equivalent to the UFC.
@robaart Hi, we agree that would be very cool :): At the moment there are no such plans as we don't currently host mixed weapon tournaments are are focused on building the HEMA scene, but we would be on the first plane to any such tournament. In the future we might host one ourselves too!.
Have one or two guest fighters as an experiment and observe how the audience reacts. That way you can still focus on HEMA, but you will plant the seeds for a future expansion.
I'm sure it will be fun and exciting for everyone involved!
@robaart The tournaments are open to all practitioners, for example this year we had amongst others a ninjutsu practitioner. Getting sparring weapons that works is the difficult thing, if you know anyone who makes katanas that flex and stand up to this level fo fighting let us know, but most good fighters can adopt to most weapons, so a kenjutsu practitioner could enter teh longsword tournament, for example.
And yes, as Matt and Scott mentioned, a truly international event! It's an honor to have had Mexico mentioned (around 2:06:14) due to my humble participation, which I look forward to repeating in the future and hopefully do much better in the competitions, thanks to the GHFS and all the participants: Swordfish rules!!! :D
It was an amazing event, both the workshops and tournaments!!! Even those of us who couldn't make it to the finals, really had a great time cheering from the crowd and making the wave, hehehehe!!! If there's one particular event I must highly recommend for any HEMA practitioner is Swordfish!!! :D
Briliant! This is world championship in swordmanship!
For next year you could add messer/dussack tournament or maybe some cutting tournament? Also please drop this wrestling/boxing anoucments in the ring :)
@perdurabo1 There was a cutting tournament actually (won by Hans Jörnlind of Sweden, who also palced 2nd in the rapier & dagger tournament), we'll put the footage up eventually. Next year we might have a grappling tournament aswell, if we have the logistics and staff for it. As for the announcements, how do you think they should be done? We are always looking for feedback and suggestions.
It's nice that you've added annotations, to show the score.
"feeling each other out"
I can't help but hearing it as a euphemism...
The intro and commentating (which is the reason I watched this) was really cool. That and the great amounts of sponsors made this look really professional.
Matt was great. Sounded like a good professional sports commentator.
Scott was a bit corny though ...and a bit pro wrestling-ish, which seriously cheapens the whole thing. Great guy, but crap commentator IMO.
@chevalion I think i started at 18:00 (6pm for those who are lazy ;-)) and when i woke up it was on 0% processing the other day (it process after it's uploaded). Then it took 1-3h to process by youtube.
Then another 5h to fix in all the scorecountings with annotations, but i think it was worth it :)
GREAT!!! really cool to be able to see this again (and again and again I have a feeling). Love the quality of the fights, the excellent narration, and the atmosphere of the event. Great work guys...
I don't know the rules or why either of them are getting points but I can't stop watching...
