Mach1Tim, no I didn't find it. The rest of the story is that I tried hiking a trail and coming in from the back side. As the crow flies, the cache was 3 miles or so from the trail head but due to three canyon crossings, it ended up being more like 6 (or 12 miles round trip). I set out at about 1 PM and didn't get home until 10 PM or so and was with 80 ft when I had to turn back. I might try a frontal attack again, maybe.
To finish out this story--I found the geocache. Turns out the path that I tried to take ended at the large rocks but there was a perfectly passable trail on the opposite side of the canyon.
