Yes, they are, unfortunately they are viewed as objects or just inadequate. However with all our experience, we have not made the world much better, people suffer still, wars still happen. I cannot conceive that the suffering is any less globally than it were in the pass.
Education and censorship(stopping them seeing certain things, forcing them to conform to arbitrary rules) is merely control an indoctrination of the child. Shit like age appropriate peers, or behaviour is control.
