I don't know why the people discuss who is better, Mastodon and Opeth both are amazing bands and both have been evolving their sound, I don't know if it's for good or bad but that is a personal decision.
Opeth is better than Mastodon if you're talking about everything up to Ghost Reveries. Ghost Reveries is where they started to fall off for me. All Heritage is is Mikael's version of Porcupine Tree. He has finely assimilated his own version of that band. At least before it was similar but done in a more metal way. If I want to hear Porcupine Tree, I listen to Porcupine Tree. I listen to Opeth because I enjoy the growling/singing done with great metal guitar work. Heritage is not Opeth to me.

I always knew (from watching interviews with Mikael on YT) that PT was his biggest influence. At least i'll always have....

If i want a growlin' experience i go watch "An American Werewolf in London"(1981) movie...or the Howling (1981) ...both classic of the genre...

I am a big fan of Opeth but I have to say, I did not enjoy the last concert they played a few months ago, I went there hoping to hear to good old Opeth growls and metal, not a single metal note was played that night ....

Yes, Opeth is better than Mastodon. But then again, Opeth is greater than every band that's ever lived. Mastodon fucking rules. For me, if Bloodbath succeeds to live on with Michael in it, I have no problem with Opeth sticking to prog :O I would hate to lose both of them though -_-

Bloodbath is not the sound which i prefer but then i am quite content listening to the good old raw sound of Orchid & My Arms, Your Hearse, for those record even the poor production quality was a plus point.

The vocals/guitars have an enjoyable groove to them, and they often sound like incantations o.O

If Opeth are moving away from metal, they started in 1999 when they released Still Life. You have no idea what you are talking about.
Opeth have been metal since 94, they have released albums with prog music on it ever since, its not their fault you fail to accept it. They are prog, always were always will be.
Further more, it is blatantly obvious to me and anyone else who reads this that you are completely unwilling to accept a band changing not just direction, but embracing that which made them in the first place. Opeth have succeeded in what Metallica failed to do. Go back to their roots. Heritage and Orchid have many of the same elements, except one was done budget in a garage, the other... in a bigger garage.

Nevertheless they ARE moving away from metal. it's a fact, not an opinion. That doesn't mean they're getting worse, but some people prefer traditional metal as a backbone of music with prog elements integrated into it, not the other way around. This is not just me saying it, but it's a fact. Maybe I said it a bit sharply, but it's just a damn comment... @sreekandeath progressive rock I suppose, but it wasn't that bad. It got 60% on the metal archives, which is an all time low for Opeth, but I'm sure that's only because the album isn't metal. For me, if Bloodbath succeeds to live on with Michael in it, I have no problem with Opeth sticking to prog :O I would hate to lose both of them though -_-

@K6Mace Thanks mate, actually mine was a rhetorical question :) I do not really mind a band evolving their sound but Opeth is really getting "commercialized",at this point I feel that they have just given into the pressures of the label. Bloodbath is not the sound which i prefer but then i am quite content listening to the good old raw sound of Orchid & My Arms, Your Hearse, for those record even the poor production quality was a plus point.

If Mastodon was just a drummer, it would stil be one of my favourites. That guy almost never does "passive" drumming... He always adds his stylistic part to the mix instead of taking a backseat. The vocals/guitars have an enjoyable groove to them, and they often sound like incantations o.O

If Opeth are moving away from metal, they started in 1999 when they released Still Life. You have no idea what you are talking about.
Opeth have been metal since 94, they have released albums with prog music on it ever since, its not their fault you fail to accept it. They are prog, always were always will be.

Further more, it is blatantly obvious to me and anyone else who reads this that you are completely unwilling to accept a band changing not just direction, but embracing that which made them in the first place. Opeth have succeeded in what Metallica failed to do. Go back to their roots. Heritage and Orchid have many of the same elements, except one was done budget in a garage, the other... in a bigger garage.

But honestly, the two having the Highlight releases of 2011, put infront of me to listen enjoy and appreciate, I have to say I got into The Hunter WAAAYYYY more than Heritage. That's just my opinion.
