you know that the dark film absorbs the light radiation and converts it to heat? It would be better to put sheets of white paper over the inside of the windows, this would still allow minimal light in, but the white colour would reflect a lot of the light back out, so less gets converted to heat, and doesn't heat up your home.
Best not to try to apply the plastic to windows while the sun is hitting it. I applied the plastic to a skylight window in the middle of the day and the thin layer of water between the glass and the plastic sheet started to boil!
