The cumbia is essentially a mixture of two cultures during the Spanish Colonial Period, The melody came from two indigenous gaitas callled KUISI SIGI AND KUISI BISI. The runaway slaves formed small towns called "palenques" in Colombia and they learned about the indigineous music. They interacted and the africans introduced the a new kind of rithm using Idigineous and African Drums. Selena danced a kind of hybrid music.

nah this is more of salsa and bachata put together. go to el DF and they dance the best cumbias there. my family is all from there and i know how to dance cumbias. the way u teach it is way more on the salsa side.
