Fantastic...had no idea this type instrument existed. Great techinque, especially for such heavy strings. Are you using actual cello strings, or bass guitar strings?
In school, my TA had a luthier craft an 11-string spruce top (the bass strings were basically drones with only the lowers frets extended). This takes the cake by far! The phrasing naturally gets a bit muddy with the lower range of this guitar, but it's still pretty cool to hear a cello suite in cello range. I enjoyed it.
Unfortunately, the lower the notes you're working with, the lower (and thus more perceptible) the upper partial overtones. The overall effect of playing a melodic run of notes this low is something like getting your shoes sucked off in the mud.
Check out the Rigel ABG It's a hybrid, bass guitar neck and scale, a body with upright bass features like bridge, soundpost, archtop, etc. With more of an upright bass tone. Similar size and volume. The bass in this video really sounds like a contra guitar, great work by the luthier to capture the timbre of a guitar in a lower register. Both are uniquely awesome instruments. What they share is that they are true acoustic basses not needing amplification.
very interesting, never seen anything like that. I could imagine very good duos with a normal sized guitar as the difference in register won't kill the beauty of the color of the guitar, like what often happens
This is definitely a guitar and not a bass. Its sound is guitar-like, only lower tunes. Good enjoyable performance, but the background-sounds are a bit disturbing.
This is Crazy! and the sqeeks would piss Bach off. I know cause they pissed me off!Now i have to go listen to the cello to heal my ears. PLEASE UNPOST THIS!!!!LOL
A rather interesting instrument. Looks like a hybrid between a Bass & Guitar. Can probably play Lute Suites transposed for this odd instrument like they are common done on a guitar.
This is an acoustic bass, or double bass, and not a classical guitar. Is this a contest for who has the biggest? Then it is probably a male chauvinistic contest.
@JerusalemRocks It's a scaled-up classical guitar. It's fretted, bridged, (lattice-)braced, strung, plucked (not bowed), held, hugged and loved like a guitar. Also note the question-mark in the title... no competition implied, I'm genuinely curious what else is out there. And by the way as amusing as the 'mine is bigger' comments are, I'd never considered size as gender-specific ... in fact the instrument has been nick-named 'oma' (grandma) so if anything she's a she, but I'm easy either way.
That is a very nice version of those suites for cello, bravo! I was thinking after I heard it that it would sound and play a little easier with flat-wound strings on it. However I don't know where one would find them for that specific instrument. Anyways, as a big fan of ALL string instruments, I like it!
@junkiemunkie1000 The guitar is in the same octave, except that it has frets, close strings, six strings, etc. It is made to be played like classical guitar and has a timbre similar to one. A double bass is an instrument that has a totally different sound.
@hojima It actually has more of a acoustic bass sound than a classical guitar. It's also not a guitar, it's a classical contrabass guitar. My opinion is that you might as well teach yourself upright bass once you approach that kind of instrument. Oh and the instrument has four strings.
i think its a very interesting instrument however i dont think the song he chose to play was the correct song to show off what this is really capable of doing. i dont have a particular song in mind and i think the strings really sound really twangy why is that? other than that i liked it.
boring..can u play some nicer stuff....but sitting on your bathroom with the same big guitar?it would be great and way more funny than this....or maybe play something on the skinny strings...a song with more happy.more joyful....nice video...greetings
@blondiebabae the scale is irrelevant to how many frets there are, the fret spacing is naturally longer for larger scale instruments. i would guess there to be 20 frets because the neck appears to join at the 14th fret. @ people calling this a classical guitar: its a bass. Many modern guitar makers make fretted 4 string acoustic basses.
Fantastic...had no idea this type instrument existed. Great techinque, especially for such heavy strings. Are you using actual cello strings, or bass guitar strings?
