In fact most neighborhoods of melbourne look very similiar to the impoverished Mexican areas of LA- dreary red brick homes, laundry hanging up outside, graffiti, litter, vandalism everywhere and cars parked on people's front yards. At least poor Mexicans have an excuse. What excuse do Aussies have for such ugly neighborhoods?

Melbourne's suburbs and neighborhoods are really, really ugly. Tiny little yards which are badly kept, run down cookie cutter houses sooo close to each other, cars parked on people's grass...very dreary and depressing. Especially compared to the wide open, green leafy suburbs of North America Melbourne's neighborhoods are just awful.

To all coming to Melbourne, keep asking the locals to find out where to go and what to do. There are some fantastic bars, nightclubs, restaurants, theatre, etc. but they are not obvious to visitors and you'll need some local advice.
