  • thats funny...everyone keeps bitching about white people making drums and it not being a documentary...i do believe the title is modern manufacturing...manufacturing...is making it quick and easy, they just put up a video, if youre not happy post your own damn video, i, vibestube...appreciate the time you took to post. thanks.

  • I have to laugh everytime I see it.... They cheapen the whole experience... This is like a chef of a fine restaurant opening a can of tomato sauce pouring it in the pot to heat it up and then pouring it over the pasta one time and serving it. This method gotta be the McDonalds of steelpan....

  • A very scientific approach to the making of a once improvised instrument.

A piano can be made in less time than this thing!

  • very interesting this video!!

  • LOL this is the REALLY simplified version.. if you want a better steel pan (if you ask me) get one from those who make it by ear and without much tools.. /watch?v=mQu5Unc_TNY

  • trinidad is just giving it's culture away. But don't worry, before i die I'm going to do something for Trinidad so Trinbagonians will learn to appreciate and innovate their own culture. It hurts so much to hear a born and bred Trini say they tired of Cahnival. Our anscestors are rolling over in their graves.

  • If you notice, there is a difference in the sound though. Or maybe it's because it wasn't just pan playing. but it hurts, that Trinidad did not come up with this first.

  • they should've shown both ways. Why are there no Caribbean people in this vid?

  • why the hell are there white people playing steel drums in the beginning

  • Why is it called "PAN"?

  • there is a whole lot going rong in this vid! what these white people for?

  • that's why i can't show certain people how to do things..cause they does think they know it betta den you..

  • I tell you what, I got the chance to play on one of these drums at the NAMM show a few months ago, they are unbelivable. Great tone, large size for easy access, these new style drums are really worth the 5000 bucks.

  • Perhaps visuals12345 should learn proper grammer and putting aside his/hers racist ideals and just enjoy the lesson on how a steel drum is made.

  • the Steel Ambassadors has the Panyard drums and they are awsome.

  • Its nice 2 see pan bein developed around the world. Every tuner and maker have there way of makin pan which gives each pan its individual sound. All the big bands in Trini all have there own unique sound which is down to the maker. Each to there own, this company have perfected there style of makin pan and they sound ok, bit to ringy for my liking but nevertheless. Anything to promote pan to the world is a plus aint it? :-)

  • good work on video but these steel drums dont sound right I played some of panyard drums and the Harmonics leaves much to be desired. You need to work on the harmonics.Well the average excited person would not have a clue about harmonics on Steel Drums would they? I guess not so the shine glow would most appeal to you and not the sound

  • No matter what color, as long as the pans sound good mon.......

  • who is these WHITE PEOPLE..... for the National instrument of TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO why didn't they get the Local Indigenous folk Born and Bread from Trinidad to show you the OLD SCHOOL way to make a Pan without all that "convenient" technology... ???? If you want to make an accurate documentary it should be as factual as possible..

  • whatever, they all sound the same but different qualities.

  • its not a documentary. its a show saying how common steel drums are made. ones that you can find in a music store. if you wanted the history of the steel drum, go search "the history of the steel drum trinidad tobago"

  • um... because this is a 'documentary' on a modern way of making steel drums, not a documentary on making steel drums from scrap steel provided by "white people".

  • @visuals12345 You're not really as stupid as your comment makes you look, are you?

  • @visuals12345 thats what im saying is we culture go to trini and watch how to make a proper pan

  • i did not want to say it but its shit total nice try but you know we got it down ,the finest makers (Gay,Guppy,Butch, Sampson,Halts). These are the people you need to be looking for.why not buy something from its home and enjoy having it and you could say i got it from its origin well. a potter is a potter and the hand hammered pan is the finest of all.

  • nice this will help me on my project!

  • they use this in soulja boy.

  • The emotion from steel drums is phenomenal. First time I heard these instruments, I was hooked on the sound.

  • I don't care how bad the pitch is...I'm gonna try to make one that gets the sound...even if it's only one pitch...it's just so damn cool.

  • cool i play steel drums in canada

  • Amazing!

  • I am disappointed that the discovery channel managed to travel to Akron, Ohio to video Steve Lawrie tuning a pan when they could just as easily gone just about 7 hours southeast of there to morgantown to tape Dr. Ellie Manette tuning a drum.

If you want to buy a pan, first look at manette steeldrums online. They are reasonably affordable and their quality is undeniable! If you can't afford them there are other people making pans that are of a higher quality then panyard pans.

  • He's right--Ellie rules. Coyle Drums are nice, too.

  • i just recently watched a two part program on the diy network that features the history and talent of Ellie Manette. It really did him justice. The process he uses is very similar to this video as far as layout with markers, magnets, rulers, and strobe tuners. The only thing He didn't use was the ultasound measuring device or what ever it was.

  • I just watched a two part episode on the diy network showing the history and talent of Ellie Manette. It really did him justice. His manufacturing techniques are almost identical minus only the sonic measuring device.

  • They no longer make drums from 55 gallon barrels. This has lead them to make monsterous steeldrums that despite the fact that their diameter is very close to that of a 85 gallon barrel which they could have a 4 octave range, that drum actually has less notes then a normal Tenor Pan and takes up more space.

  • You don't need to but pans from trinidad and this video is bullshit. The originator of the modern steel drum lives in the US. Ellie Manette lives in Morgantown, West Virginia and has a shop where he is, for now, still tuning and improving the steel drum. Panyard has moved too far away from the work that Dr. Mannette has done.

  • why do you have to be so insulting by saying trinidad and this video is bullshit? Just because you're not proud of where you're from doesn't mean it's o.k to insult another's heritage! Do you know how to make a steel drum? You probably can't but I won't st1oop to your level and call you bullshit or where ever you're from. Stay positive and remember ONE LOVE MON!

  • Trini's the first 2 make pan inventors of the beautiful sounds u hear on the steel pan BIG UP TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

  • I'm a born Trini from Belmont area. So I'm giving shouts too. BIG UP TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO. And yes the beautiful sounds come from TRINI!

  • Go to Panyard's website and read their history. When they started out, there were no formal businesses in Trinidad making pans, and little or no after-sales support. Plus, Panyard enlisted the assistance of some of Trinidad's best pan technicians and artists. They didn't just up and steal away Trinidadian business.

  • @SchoolofSoul u crazy there was businesses get outta here with that

  • fantastic.

  • amazing the technological advances but its scary to think of all the years of hard work and development by pans creators n innovaters of trinidad seem like they been hijacked and remodelled in the usa theres actually not much in terms of development being done here that hasnt been done or already theres just more money behind it.listen to the kitch tune pan in danger for all the issues these developments throw up and the consequences for the inventors of pan. one love owen. big up maestros uk

  • thats cool!

  • commercialization of the pan. bullshit

  • the guy on mr rogers was cooler he just used a regular hammer.

  • Panyard not only produces the finest pans available today, they also are the only company forwarding the artform into the modern day from the dark ages. Thanks to the Panyard family for your knowledge and passion.

  • i aint ever takin my steel drum for granit again

  • good but...is a bullshit vid..get a real vid...from the original place n not this commercial crap they doin here....go to TRINIDAD...discovery should of went to trinidad n get it not this stupidness ...where usa n china tryin to buy the right to trinidads national instrument.

  • So the ONLY place anyone shouldget a steelpan form is trinidad? How about guitars? Where should we get those? It's a musical instrument, it is a tool for art. If someone makes it well, I don't think it matters where it ceoms from.

  • I know right if the sound of a steel drum from USA and a drum from trinidad happen to differ, one still has the choice to buy theres from trinidad. And what the hell do I know but it looks like they put a lot of time and technoogy into it

  • @moonlitesymphony yes it does in trinidad is where is originated you see how they make it in the video is garbage it differs from trinidad where theyr take their time nd make it by hand and it sounds way better

  • yeah!

  • very cool

  • thats awesome
