  • any older people out there that are knowledgeable of 70's jazz music from other countries please read the rest. I was listenting to this saturday morning jazz show and they said the name of the jazz musician that was real popular in his native country (Africa I think but not sure). I did my best to write it down and this is what I got ; MULAHTU AHSTOCKI. Can you tell me what artist I might have heard based on the mispelled clue.

  • @222Lightning Mulatu Astatke

  • i love that classic jazz approach of starting to play together then 4 solo's and then again the togetherness... and this quartet does it in a superb way !!!

  • really great!!

  • marvelous

  • Thank you for this beautiful clip.

  • my son shares the same birthdate,,,both so smooth!!!!

  • I so agree man.

  • chet baker was a better trumpet player than Miles Davis in my opinion. Miles Davis better artist and more important maybe, but Chet Baker is just so fun to listen to

  • @EchoCannon89 I love Chet's phrasing. He could play fast if the situation called for it (my intro to Chet was his version of "Milestones," which was played at lightning speed) but in my opinion the "sweet spot" was on pieces like this, where the tempo allowed him room to really get some emotion behind his playing. I suppose one could sum it up by comparing the differences between bebop and cool jazz. :P

  • @NorthWriter I agree totally, he put more emotion into his playing than any other jazz musician I can think of, maybe Bill Evans or even Toots Thielemans (love him as well)

  • i love this chet baker and this channel i m a singer i sing my funny valentine i hope you enjoy

  • His playing is amazing.. it's a shame his kids and grand kids don't really appreciate him that much.... lol my mom is the band director at the school his grand kids attend in Tulsa and they hate jazz.

  • who are the musician's that are playing?

  • While his smoky sound is not an ideal I would steer my trumpet students towards, Chet's jazz styling and senses are without peer. I have a strong sense of what a trumpet ought to sound like, yet I cannot help but think his unique sound served him well. With his various physical problems, his drug use and all, he is without as doubt one of the giants.

  • @mhstpt Mike Steinel from UNT showed me a way to get that smoky sound without really doing anything to change your embechure, or set up. it's kind of a neat trick. you just force your throat open and your teeth open more and don't put alot of air out. I kind of like the smoky tone for a group like this.

  • @superbat45 Enjoy his creativity and seek your own sound. I worry when students try to imitate Chet's style in that way. It was compelling, for sure, but if a player manages to deliver a powerful sound of his or her own, there is no need to pull back just to achieve an affect. Had Chet not had dental issues (and substance abuse issues), his sound would have undoubtedly evolved to something even greater. Build on his creativity, not his tone.

  • @mhstpt I just meant it was a neat trick. I have been hired before on jobs to imitate chet.

  • @superbat45 Indeed! A lot of us have been called on to "imitate" Chet. I can sing as well as play trumpet and have therefore taken up the challenge on standard ballads he was famous for (My Funny Valentine, Stardust, Look for the Silver Lining, etc.). His style is both soothing and intoxicating (got me a lot of dates in my single days!). I wish in my wildest dreams that I had his singular ability to do what he did. Now all we can do is marvel at the what did put forth before his untimely end.

  • @mhstpt If this were Miles, you'd probably be eating him up. Miles had a "smoky sound not an ideal..."

  • @MrRickywallace Sometimes, we overlook part of a sound to get to its essence. Miles at various times displayed technique, but as he progressed in musical creativity, he seemed to pull back on the technical elements. While I didn't always find his playing ideal, as you say, his creativity inspired the likes of Gil Evans. Thus, his playing demands study and appreciation.

  • @andifyouhadtwocoats

wow, i have no F 'ing idea what the hell your talking about , lol

  • @MusicForYourFunk He's mad because his X-box broke!

  • Comment removed

  • @andifyouhadtwocoats get the fuck out of here man, jazz is the illest thing that has ever happened to the human race. The number of girls that chet has been with def outnumbers the number of times you've ever talked to a girl. Don't get it twisted. Where you from?

  • @andifyouhadtwocoats

hey, why can't two people just love each other??? If that's what you mean, hell yeah, jazz is about ALL people loving each other.

  • @andifyouhadtwocoats well ye, ok alight^^ youtube cant avoid unnessary commentaries posted by people without any knowledge^^ but its ok, it made me smile at least xD

  • @andifyouhadtwocoats Ok...I bet you're not serious whaha

  • @teknonemon2 how do you figure that?? he struggled with a horrible heroin addiction all his life which ultimately killed him. just like so many talented musicians...

  • Estatic that so many jazz aficionados remember Chet Baker. I've said this before. The candidate most likely to play him on screen would have been a young Chris Walken. Has anybody seen Chris tap? Move over Sammy and Fred!

  • Thanks,thanks,many thanks!

  • No! There's a bit cut out during the bass solo! Why? Why?

  • love love this version

  • what nationality is he? is he jaiaica?

  • who cares?

  • Chesney Henry Baker

    23-Dec-1929

birthplace : Yale, Oklahoma , USA

  • @pisihopat American obviously; where else would he be from?

  • Even being in such terrible condition he still plays fantastic. One of my favourite trumpet players, really a shame his life was so hard.

  • He had it all...he made his own choices...it didnt have to be the way it was...sad yes... but that is how he chose his life to be...

  • @Saxotomitry The best art is often achieved through personal distress.

  • naturalmente senor carlos... yo creo...

  • Idiot period.

  • FABULOUS!

  • Oh, they said who at the end. Forget I asked.

  • Does anyone know who the pianist is on this?

  • Musicians:

Chet Baker (trumpet), Harold Danko (piano), Hein Van Der Geyn (bass), John Engels (drums).

    Composed by Victor Young

  • thanks for this ... musicians added to playlist description .

  • harold danko, or russ freeman, both great

  • Great posting! Hopefully the Foundation will see fit to leave Chet's music on YouTube undisturbed. Thanks! Five stars.

  • we can only hope . and enjoy it while we can .

    thanks :)

  • The legal Oklahoma Foundation has requested uploads of Chet's music to YouTube. They were not the ones to remove Chet's videos in the first place. Check out their YouTube upload!!!

  • oh yeah !!!

  • Ok. Thanks for sharing :-)

  • Nice, but, where's the video?

  • this is from the album not the DVD .

i posted it for people to be able to listen to ... along with the other songs from the album .

check my playlists for the complete album .
