this is the way i like it! this guy and his band know how! he's humble and make his music for the pleasure of music! not for the bucks not even for discipline but for the pure joy... great guys, make more music...
Kevin Gilbert was an absolute awesome talent so smart and gifted we are just lucky we got to enjoy his talents for the time he was here with us"Because of you" is a great song..."cause you are the highest building and i am the street i guess it will take an earthquake for our eyes to meet..."awesome lyric from a epic cat we miss you Kevin you were destined for greatness
Kevin made a careful study of every musical idiom he worked in, absorbing all of its classic influences then filtering his own ideas through that template. I visited his studio often and one day walked in to find a stack of ultra-classic CDs stacked up on his console; Hotel California, Dark Side of the Moon, Who's Next, Zeppelin IV, etc. I laughed and asked "What are you doing with all these, learning to be great?" He smiled that singular Gilbert smile and replied "Exactly."
Remember meeting them at the Band Explosion world finals in Tokyo in 1988. Great band, great music and great people, they really deserved to win. Thanks for putting this video up.
Great song! First time I've heard it, thank you so much for uploading! This kind of reminds me of Wang Chung from the mid 80s, their "Live and die in L.A."-soundtrack.
Couldn't agree more, mrchad, it is a great song and it kind of grows on you. Also love his work on the Toy Matinee album. Thanks to nandomortani for the upload!
I was there, went there to see Cheap Trick and then they only played for maybe a half hour and all these bands from the contest came out and played and it took forever, felt kind of ripped off, and then Kevin's band came out and it was great. Had no idea he would grow into one of my favorite artists.
Met him at the Oasis Nightclub in San Jose, CA just before Giraffe did this song at the venue. He was a nice guy, and just seems to love what he was doing... Kevin. You. Are. Missed.
That's from the KG Thud live at the Troubadour CD and it's also in the KG solo acoustic Live At Cafe Largo DVD which has both songs from the Yamaha Sound Check. Support the foundation. Spread the word
Thanks for posting this. Don't know if it would have ended any differently, but I had the chance and tried to sell him on the idea of self-publishing and to just shine the labels. They'd sold a lot of CD's directly at the former Tower in Campbell all on their own - th dividers went "Gabriel, Peter", "Genesis", "GIraffe". It was music for musicians, but there was definitely a fame carrot the Giraffe was chasing too. God bless 'em all -Giraffe was the best..
You are the desert
and I am the rain
But I'm good as nothing
knowing that each drop falls in vain...
Brilliant lyrics!

I *love* the way it kicks in on the '2' after the bass breakdown. So nifty.

Kevin's comments at the beginning of this video illustrate part of why I'm so sad he's no longer with us. Thanks so much for posting it.
