"I do this every day in my classroom." No, you don't, and it's arrogant and rude to claim that you do. This is performance art. Marina Abramovic is probably the most famous performance artist, and rightfully so. There is a lesson to be learned behind this artwork. Something so simple is so meaningful. When have you made that kind of connection with someone? You can empathize and understand so much through just eye contact. I wish I could experience this. Respect, please.
When one person tells another person "this is art", it becomes art. There is good art and bad art. Every person is a critic. Every person is an artist. This has made the word "art" and "artist" pretty meaningless. The question, "is it art?" is like asking, "what does purple taste like to you?"
This work could be called "the artists are present", Marina Abramovic and whomever she is sitting in front of. What do you guys think?
@thealchemist1111 I don't think that's what Abramovic is getting at here. She's making a statement about the STATIC nature of portraits (mostly photos but also realistic paintings). To look at a portrait of a woman sitting in chair for a few minutes is all well enough, but to state at her in person while she politely doesn't move is quite creepy. It kind of makes you wonder whether there should be a social more for looking at portraits.
it's so funny that just yesterday that I was watching this thing on James Franco for Esquire here on YouTube and right afterwards I watched this interview with Lady Gaga who mentioned Marina Abramovic. Today I finally got around to checking her out, found this and realised this was the woman from the James Franco thing. Magnificent!
Probably that there is no purpose. And if someone dares to call it a piece of shit, some snobbish quasi-artist will tell that one has no right to judge and that it's subjective.
@oknarbtal It seems more like art is subjective and *everyone* is entitled to judge. What's the point in art other than for people to experience and react to it?
Wow, fascinating, that you sit 9 hours without moving, eating, speaking and drinking on an uncomfortable wooden chair, sleep only 4 hours in the night, just eat one small salat, just to go sit 9 hours again and that for 3 months.
You must be one hell of a student, seriously.
Someone should make a movie from your extreme lifestyle
Could be, I heard, school background makes a movie of someone sitting there staring into nothing much more exciting then the background of an museum. I mean, there are...desks...
Oh yeah, and a board! So much more exciting then what is here, just with the difference, that you would give up after a week because of pain, hunger and loss of sleep while that woman sat that through.
Even when it isn't art, it is something douchebags like you could NEVER do.
No, it were 9 hours a day, as long as the museum was open.
And it is obvious that you (as sadly most people) have no idea, what performance art is.
Well, I guess, you don't even know what art in general is.
Because the way you talk was the same way people talked about Picasso and van Gogh back then. "Why is he so stupid wasting that expensiv colors on those junk?! God, he worked two months for that scum! And for who? For himself, how stupid".
1. she said herself it was 7 hours in an interview
2. you did’t explain to me why she only slept for 4 hours a night, 24 − 7 = 17 hours, even if it was 9 hours that leaves her with 15 hours each day . . .
3. If thats what you wanna call art, go right ahead but your comment made it sound like someone made her do all this shit, the truth is NO ONE HAS, so if she wished to sacrifice all her free time, fucking let her
if i had all this time in my life i would do better things
you can argue that i dont know what performance art is O_O
im not stupid. . .
art is subjective . . . i look at this and i think 'what a waste of fucking time ‘ but whatever floats her boat . . .and quite obviously yours.
lady gaga likes to dress up in condoms and perform with anti religious symbols and blood and all that other crap. I also find that quite pointless and over the top, but her fans love it
picasso and van gogh at least exhibited some talent with their art, and although it would take a lot of patience and discipline from marinas part, i cant even let myself compare these artists, with marina. so Before you go on a heroic rampage, defending your idol marina realise that the original poster was just joking, and you going on about marina’s sacrifice for this ‘art’ and comparing her to van gogh does nothing but make you look like a fool
I'm not idolising her, she is not really one of my favorite artists, but she is one. And the stuff she does is art. That was all I wanted to say, even though it seems you kind of understand what Art is meant.
As far as I know, she was sitting there 9 hours and sleeping 4 hours. Her performances were always very humilating and painful (look up "Rhythm 0" for that, if you want).
She wants to see, how people react to her. That is, what art always wants. Create feelings.
Thats also why I think, she is not wasting time or stupid or something anyone can do. She is testing her body to the extreme, she had six performances where she did almost die from. Two involved an audience which could decide over that. Where Picasso painted the pain of war, she is trying to feel it. And the audience can watch her to realise that. I also guess, she is happy, when she knows, some people think, shes wasting time. At least, she made people feel and think. Thats all
I have to say that “Rhythm 0’ is very interesting, and I get your point, she is testing her endurance and evoking people’s emotions and reactions. However i find this one a bit dull, but like i said its all subjective and we can agree to disagree. lol
@stikitape214 Just to clarify: she would do this seven hours a day for ten weeks; however for four of those weeks; she sat for ten hours because the museum stayed open longer. During these hours she did not move, eat, drink, or use the bathroom. During the night, she would wake up every 45 minutes to hydrate.
How has no one commented on this? Marina is spellbinding at MoMA. When I was there, another artist performed along with her. His name is Amir Baradaran, he has a website but I think hes got videos on youtube also
