and she never won the Oscar, nominated 3 times. god damn it and today with our hollywood trash actreses can't even make one real NORMAN DESMOND* THE BIGES STAR OF ALL TIME*.
Gloria Swanson was the most glamorous star Hollywood ever had. Other actresses could have probably played Norma Desmond but none could have done it nearly as well or with as much true style as Gloria Swanson. She was truly a star.
It was the brilliant portrayal by Gloria Swanson that carried this movie to its ultimate heights. Her insanely convoluted portrayal of a long forgotten star trying to capture her lost glory is unsurpassed in the annals of film history. Any other star in her place would have reduced the role to a mere parody but she carried this movie till the very end, eliciting in the end, one of the finest performances in Hollywood
Whoa...well-done video! The way you phased Ms. Swanson's approach to the viewer at the end was nice. And great song selection...by a woman with an incredible voice - Ella Fitzgerald!
FABULOUS!! I love this movie. Miss Gloria Swanson - a powerful actress and a powerful woman. I just can't picture Mae West pulling this off like Gloria Swanson did! One of my favorite movies! Makes me wish I still lived in So-Cal.
I heard he also thought of Mae West. He certainly made no mistake in choosing Gloria Swanson. The selection really worked in this Norma Desmond character. Gloria Swanson has immortalized this character, and I doubt if anyone else could have done it as well, and certainly as memorable.
Mae West turned down the role which was that of a former silent-film star who had faded into obscurity....Mae West would have know part of that !! In this case, I'm glad she declined. Gloria Swanson was brilliant in her portrayal...almost as if she lived it. :-)
Actually I spoke to Mr. Wilder about a bio I am writing on Pola Negri, before he died. It was Negri he considered but he found her thick Polish accent troublesome and opted for Swanson
Gloria was far from the first choice to play this role, Mae West was the first Choice but felt she was too young to play a silent film star. Now it seems impossible the role was written for her.
actually, mae west was second choice. The first choice was Mary Pickford. Mary wasn't chosen because she owned ALL the rights to ALL her films and that just wouldn't work. Plus, she was under contract. Besides the role was written for anyone, Gloria Swanson just fit it the best.
Swanson was around 50 in this movie. Back then in movie industry it was considered old. But she was still a star!! Today many talented actress are much older, even in their 60 and still do movies.
Something more 1920s or 1930s, like maybe an old silent film score would have worked a lot better... And Gloria Swanson was a REAL silet film actress which is why she was PERFECT for this role. This choice of music, not so much...

At the end, she never got her close up look, the camera blurred out her face.

The editing was CHOICE! Great, in fact.
