  • It's great! Guitar looks great, but can't hear it over the banjo. A normal problem with banjos.

  • @mitoguitarman Thanks for your message - just be glad it's not a resonator banjo!

  • I sincerely like how you play this !!!

  • @Templarone1 Most kind comment - thank you!

  • You two should be on Radio and Tv and making lots of money!

  • I love that song. No one plays it better than you!

  • Nice ! You should come to Strawberry some time!

  • Thanks for crediting Stephen Foster.

  • @KozenaFan There is magic in these timeless songs and Stephen Foster created many of them. It is important to honor those old time heros.

  • I've been all over Youtube listening to this melody and I believe you two have nailed the best rendition I've ever heard! You really keep it rolling along. Thank you for giving us this to listen to! And you both appear to be having a good time playing it.

  • @Canoe571 We do have fun - that's what it's all about! Thanks for the message, your words are encouraging!

    Mac

  • If I hadn't been born with parents there for me I would have wanted these two to adopt me

  • LOVE that clawhammer !!! hail from a brazilian banjoist :D

  • Thumbs up for that cat.

  • I have looked all over you tube and cannot find a version that includes the voclas to this song. Anyone find any ?

  • @phatthand Look at "2nd South Carolina String Band Angelina Baker"

  • I just love the way you play that tune, it's as lively and gay as can be!! Makes one feel good, thank you, and congratulations!

  • Looks like someone had trouble with there mouse? It's easy you just click on the thumbs up for GOOD Music , cause it does not get any better -n-this!!!!!!!!!

  • @cortevens Kitty got the mouse - Thanks for your message and comments!

  • What tuning are you using here?

  • @crumpley1953 The tuning is open C - gCGCE

  • of course, the playing is great, but in addition, this is an absolutely fabulous video. It's a work of art right up there with the "American Gothic" oil painting. Even the cute cattie got into the act. It was a real happening.

  • @paulhallart Thanks for the great message! We are fortunate to be able to call this place home - kitty and all!

  • Great!!! I love your style! Thanks so much for uploading this.

I know this HAS to be a Vega banjo!! I have an old Vega with a Tubaphone tone ring.

  • Great playing, I loved it! My favorite version on YouTube! I was looking at your banjo, and I don't see a tailpiece. What model is that?

    Again, great job!

  • @FancyGapClawhammer Thanks for your message and comments! The banjo is a Vega Style N which was originally a tenor. I put a 5 string neck on and it turned out to be a good player.

    Mac

  • the cat seems to enjoy the music too :)

  • @C122131 We think so.

  • I must say that I seem to find your arrangements to be the best. I enjoy your playing immensely. I want to ask, is your tuning here GCGCE? Well, that's the way I figure it, watchin and listening to you. All I can say is it works great for me. I learned a couple of tricks watching you Mac...........Thanks a bunch.

  • @spikel166 Thanks for your message and comments - you got the tuning right.

  • I'd love it if you sang the song along with your beautiful pickin'

  • @WilliamCerf Thanks! The vocal arrangement is different than this "old time" fiddle version. Maybe we'll try it sometime.

  • Very nice!

  • Thank you!

  • Oh, I wish we were neighbors, so I could listen in real time. And I noticed the cat, somewhat keeps time with it's tail. Did you know it's is in the entire film? Kool Kitty and your playing is just wonderful as always.

  • Thanks for the message! That's our little wild cat - adopted us.

    Mac

  • i love your alls sound...thanks for sharing this old time music!

  • Thanks for commmenting!

  • HI ya guys, wishing you both a merry xmas and a great new year from the uk. how about doing this in A so that i can play along with the fiddle? yellow rose of texas would be great in A also, although i play that and marching to georgia in double c and the first string on its maximum of f, a new first string will cope but an older string will break! all the best ged todd uk.

  • Absoutely brilliant guys, love it (and same for all your other videos too!)

where in the US do you guys live, it looks beautiful. I'd love a house with a porch like that to play the banjo in in retirement!

Thanks again, love from Belfast, Northern Ireland

  • You guys are great!!!...

    Ham

  • wow how old is that banjo?

  • Vega Model N tenor pot assembly from the late 20's with a modern 5 string neck.

  • fantastic! Awe inspiring... I'm gonna have a crack at this.

    Jason.

  • is your banjo in regular g tuning?

  • No. The banjo is in open C tuning -

    gCGCE

    Best,

    Mac

  • haha love the cat sneaking around in the background.

  • She's the wild cat but probably would have ended up in a lap if we played long enough. Thanks for the message!!

    Mac

  • Danish: "Hold da op hvor er I gode" (English: You are fantastic)

    Greatings from Lars - Denmark

  • exelent music and abeautiful home .

  • Fan-pickin-tastic! The banjo at it's very best - and great backing from Annie.

After trying for two years to master the clawhammer action, it makes me realise just how truly excellent this performance is! Great stuff!

  • Very nice. Can I come over and pick with you folks?

  • get your cat to play fiddle and you'd have yourself a great band!

  • Your comments are well received!! Thank you for the message!!!

  • Man wow! I have to say this is a excellent performance of you and the wife playing! Even the cat loves your banjo picking! LoL. And what a beautiful fitting setting for the video with that beautiful home in the background and those trees! so so beautiful as is the talent. Hats off to you two for playing the good stuff. California boy wishing he was there to hear it in person.

  • I am not very knowlegable about OT or Bluegrass but I have to say...I found that outrageously good. Hope to hear more from you....

  • Thank you!!!

  • Thank for continuing the great American art form.

  • It's a pleasure. Thank you for commenting!!

  • What a great song. Thanks!

  • Thank you for the comments!!!

  • I play this video every day and listen to the wonderful sound that you bring out of your banjo. It brighten's my day down here in n.c. All I can say is if this were karate lessons Iwould call you MASTER ....HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY.... YOUR FAN IN N.C. ...... JIMMY

  • You are the best!! Thanks for those great comments!!!

  • Do you play a Vega Style M Tu-ba-phone or is it a Whyte Laydie banjo? It sure rings nicely.

  • You'll be suprised to hear that the banjo is a Vega Style N tenor. I had the 5 string neck installed using the original dowel. I haven't had the pot apart yet but it looks like a small metal band or ring between the head and the wooden rim. Thank you for commenting!!

  • Well, that is the best-sounding Style N I've ever heard; you certainly have a jewel there. I am playing clawhammer on a 1922 Style S pot (10-1/8" diameter Tu-ba-phone) with a short scale 2007 Wyatt Fawley 5-string maple neck and it is all I could ask for. Thanks for sharing your fine music! Ken

  • Good job on a wonderful old tune! I see you have the same tuner as I do.

  • Thank you! Yes, the tuner was left on in this video - I usually try to get it out of the way. Good eye!!

  • Great old time sound on that banjo!!

  • Thank you for the comment!!

  • Thanks for the outside shot, you are fortunate to live in such a lovely place

  • Oh my gosh you're a good damn banjo-er.

  • Thank you for that!!!

  • One word: AMAZING!!! Thank you for the wonderful sounds :-)

  • One word: AWESOME!!! love your videos!

  • Angelina Baker is a great song for the old time banjo, and it is well done.

  • Awesome, Just plain awesome, banjo at it's best. Ilove the sound of your banjo this video and the one 'go on and git' Hope I am that good one day

  • Thank you for those wonderful comments!!

  • that sounded great! guitar and banjo is a fine combo, enjoyed it!

  • Thank you for your comments!

  • Banjo novice here, but is this in a style of playing that would have been contemporary with Foster?

Great playing - lots of drive and fun. Thanks.

    roaddamage

  • No. In the Foster era it would probably would have been played in the minstrel or parlor style - look at oldcremona "Arkansas Traveler" on youtube for a good idea of that style. Thanks for the comments!

  • Your outside, spring must be right around the corner :)

  • Not soon enough for me! It was still a little cool.

  • This has always been one of my favorites. Well done!

  • Lots of energy in that! Great stuff.
