@L88THEBAND Interesting comment - in fact much appreciated, we have far too much of the cult of personality. However the above video would be well over an hour long and would boore even me to tears.
Sure ive cut out quite a bit of detail but its mostly superficial.
No Bertie your cup doesn't have a few too many curves :) and it is beautiful... One of those days when I find an appropriate and suitable piece of wood I will try and make this/yours style of cup. Thanks again for sharing it with us.
I heard that one should "boil" the wood in salty water before carving and after the rough carving. Is that true? I want to start carving my mug as soon as I found a proper piece of wood.
@craftsmank Hey! I'm now very close to a finished cup - my first one - and I'm really happy. But do you have some tips for me how to smoothen the inner side of the cup? I guess that as I'm improving the surface will automatically get smoother but right now I'm getting a bit tired of working for hours on it with "sandpaper" ... Do you have a tip for me? Thanks a lot
wood splits along its length because of the differential in drying rates. if the wood is thin it generally dosent split - if you need to make it thicker, you slow it down. Plastic bag is best.
If the centre of the tree is present it wont work.
Oak is one of the hardest woods to dry properly - one 2 inch plank i had took something like 5 times longer to dry than similar ash.
Do you add a finish or anything to help protect/preserve the wood?
I ask partly because i dried a short log from an oak sapling with the bark removed and candle wax over the grain ends. High speed fan in my house gave it a shallow, consistent checking pattern all along the outside (which is what i wanted to test). So now i want to make a cup out of it (there are no cracks deeper than 1cm in a 3" diameter log) but want to add something to prevent anymore cracking. Polyurethane?
that was so cool im only 18 and am at colege but i love carving stuff in the workshop at colege and realy want to get into it but by the klooks of it it is ver y expensive for tools have you got any advice on wot tools are gd for a beginer as i wud love to start buy making a cup like that evan if it does take ages to learn
Lovely. I watched most of your videos and enjoyed your relaxed style. They are very informative and have sparked an interest for me in carving. I do some woodturning which I enjoy immensely but I made a pair of entwined hearts for my wife for Valentine's Day - yes, beneath this cold, cynical exterior there is an old romantic - and I really enjoyed the process. I didn't have the knowledge, skills or tools but I had determination and got what I wanted 3rd go. I have to get carving tools. Thanks.
Thank you very much for that offer. I have been searching for tools and I've got a short list made up to get started. I'll send you a message later when I get names and numbers organised.
@craftsmank ...Now I am ready to move on for the more intricate pieces hence i would love having good tools -they are not available in my neighborhood . thanks a lot!
@craftsmank such a great video of your artistic work, thanks for sharing it! can you give any link to the company you buy your carving tools at, please, i didn't get it well from the video. I am a Hungarian crafter, working mainly with wool - also with wood, simply Waldorf pieces like simple birds carved roughly out of piece of branch, also playing wooden bricks and elf-houses.
Hi!
i love what you did with the cup!
could you post a link to where you bought your chissels?

Hey Craftsmank? Could you please post these videos in their original form without the commentary? And at normal speed? Thanks!

Hey!

There is some question about this - wood is denatured when subjected to heat but i rather feel this may be yet another unquestioned tradition.
Another tradition is to fill the cup with milk and let it go off, to seal the pores, this i understaqnd works very well.
good luck,

@Staatwenzler
it sure helps to use the right paper - i start with 80 gritt aluminium oxide, cuts fast. finish with 240, thats good enough

is this an old pattern of cup in norway? did you determine the type of wood it is? absolutely geourgeous work. 5/5 X2

So glad it grabs you - the man i gave it to was delighted.
The design is straight out of my head - let the tools decide.
Type of wood - wet, hardish should hold up - all the decision that was necessary.
