  • Ouch! No tape lifters... did they wait till the 440 to get those on the machine? That particular deck you have is mono, right?

  • How deep are your tape racks ?,i am looking for something like that for my 350 also ,these racks help to save some room space..Great video Thanks :)

  • The 351 is a good unit :D

  • hahaha...i have a Ampex 351-2 ( portable version ) in pristine condition, Playback with incredible sound stages.

  • Can people come there and record on them?

  • THat is epic and amazing! I liked the end, "test check test check, mic test check"!

  • Great to see this stuff in running shape!

  • Pretty cool!

  • was that a "55" over in the corner....

    what else you got?

also load the 351 using two hands...have the ac on and as you lift the follower arm hit the start button and wrap the tape around the hub on the take up reel....

  • the 55 is a Gates multi cart player. Used in the radio station years ago to have continious cart play...Let me practice on that. thanks for commenting

  • That sounds wonderful. I have a Scully 280-8.

  • it looks like your bypassing the capstan in the video!

  • When you fast forward and rewind, you should ALWAYS move the tape away from the heads using the head headshield with the little black knob on it. Firstly, you will ruin the speakers with loud high frequencys, and second, its really bad for the heads. They will wear out a lot quicker and its just not good in general.

Other wise, respect for using these machines. I have never found a better sounding machine. Always sound good.

  • thanks for the tip...I get lazy sometimes

  • Very interesting studio machines! Thanks for showing them!

  • Long live 350's and 351's. I have several. I even have a Magnecord pt-6 that still works.

  • I really loved your video & studio. Love those old Ampex 351's, but I don't think all four are working?

I used to work for Scully and was authorized Ampex & MCI technician so I got a real kick out of your AMPRO mixer, as they were the former owner of Scully in the late 1970s. Beautiful, just beautiful.

    Keep on trackin'!

  • Yep we only have one unit working so far, we replace all of the capacitors and got one unit in service. The others need recapped and new tape heads

    thanks for comments

  • Not a problem....I try to keep any deck I see in good working order.

If I had an extra, I'd send you one.....

  • Looks to me like the tape tension is

    A) Messed up or

    B) you need a new 7" takeup reel. That's bad for the tape.

  • How so?

  • Well, unless it's some weird background sound, I hear the tape scraping against the takeup reel...bad for the tape.....and it looks to me like the tape is not tensioned properly....could be my imagination, tho.

  • I think your right...didn't realize it until I saw the light hitting the tape. I think that cheapy take up reel is warped..

    thanks for commenting.
