  • My jaw dropped! That was gorgeoous! :) And I agree with Mebantiza, and add that I never cared for the starfighter like movements of large capital ships like they were portrayed in ST TNG and beyond. The Motion Picture and The Wrath of Khan got it right., as did you with your excellent recreation! :)

  • I knew it seemed slightly different! You made it almost exactly like the opening of ST:TMP except the detailing on your model around the bridge area looks like it's lacking. It could be because you're using bump mapping for that which may not always work so well in low-light conditions...other than that, it had me fooled for the most part!

  • ands THATS about how exciting this movie got

  • very nice work!

Too bad the HD version hasn't gotten as many hits- it really gains a lot in HD!

  • Beauty!

  • POSSE!

  • Fooled me. Looks like movies use to. Real. No the fake CGI.

  • Wow! The Klingon vessels are almost perfect, color's a tiny bit off, and being in film I noticed when the view changed it didn't swing exactly the same way as in the movie. And VGER was off. But the movie was redone, and if you hadn't said anything I probably wouldn't have noticed at ALL!

  • That music is awesome!

  • bad ass, what rendering software did you use? Did you have Ambient Occlusion on?

  • Wait, this isn't footage from the movie? Awesome, I've seen ST:TMP dozens of times. i didn't know the difference!

  • This was really good.

  • Best part about this sequence is how it more accurately protrays the mass and scale of these vessels . Contrast for example DS9,has these and federation ships of equal\greater Mass manuvering like Jet fighters.

  • Yes, but would that apply in a zero-g environment? No offense. :-(

  • Mass is the same in any environment. Weight refers to gravitational pull on an object. Mass is how much force is needed to move an object. At full impulse, the Defiant will move more easily than the Enterprise at the same speed. In DS9 they made it seem as if massive ships could move like less massive ones. Mass remains constant even in space.

  • @spacecowboy5000

Even w/ a lack of drag due to the vacuum of space? I'm just wondering. XS

  • Even drag can't affect mass. Only a Force can affect it - like gravity or warp engines. Drag is caused by an object's aerodynamic shape moving against some resistance like wind. To exprience drag the object has to be moving - a force has been. It's unlikely the object at rest would be moved by something as weak as wind. But even in space you'd be able to see the difference in mass when two ships with different masses are acted upon by the same force (warp 1).

  • @spacecowboy5000 Drag can't affect mass? So two like-sized objects like, say, a bowling ball and a balloon will fall at the same speed through an atmosphere?

Oh and uh, how do sailboats start moving?

  • @16vr6 Mass is always absolute no matter where it is. Of course drag, which results from the medium the mass moves through, affects how it moves. A bowling ball will fall straight down while a balloon will move around wildly. But drag does not affect mass it only affects the velocity of the mass.

  • @spacecowboy5000 So force affects the mass, but not the velocity of the mass?

  • @16vr6 The drag is force. The force on the bowling ball and balloon (if they are the same size) from drag is the same. The balloon has less mass so the drag will cause more deceleration. If the balloon has 1/100 the mass of the bowling ball, the bowling ball will get 1/100th of the deceleration of the balloon (for the same drag force).

  • @16vr6 There is drag on the bowling ball but it's negligible compared to the drag on the balloon. Sailboats depend on the weather conditions. On a good day, the wind pushes against their sails and moves them forward. A good sailor knows how to tack his sails so that the wind always fills them.

  • That was by far my biggest problem with the ambitious fleet battles of DS9, the dogfight mentality they shot them with as opposed to Hood vs Bismark type battles. The Defiant may be able to move somewhat nimbly, but they showed Reliant class ships and others jinking and twisting like F-16s, I agree with you the slow, mass-suggesting speed of these klingon ships, and of the starship duel in Wrath of Khan, make more sense. DS9 was going for Babylon 5 furball action and forgot about mass/scale.

  • dude, this was REALLY good!

  • Hey, that was pretty sweet.

  • Really nice work!

  • These look exactly like like Original Series D-7s imitating the K'tinga flyby. Nice work.

  • Very nice, looks almost exactly like the original scene. ^.^

    5/5

  • From 08 December 2006? Time to make a HD-Version. Let us see DETAIL that YouTube doesn't permit us to see with it's old low quality format.

  • Great stuff. The nearest yet (of the many attempts seen on YouTube and elsewhere) to the original, now 30 years old and a lasting testament to the work of some unbelievable FX guys.

  • The opening fly by from Spaceballs puts this to shame for slow as molasses, lol :)

  • Damn lay off the steroids, you tweaked sumbitch.

  • Wonderful, just wonderful! Great work!

  • Nice

  • 5 stars from me! Excellent job! The only improvement I could suggest would be to add some higher poly details or more detailed textures to the head of the ship for that close up. It's hard to tell with youtube's compression, but it looks just a little flat.

  • One thing that I would bring up, is that the models in the movie looked great because of all the details such as rivets and panels in the hull, making it look like it was something that was actually built and assembled. I can see faint ones, but I'd bring those out a little more. Otherwise EXCELLENT job.

  • I love that model. You get points for saying "Lucas-ised"

  • In the novel, Kirk receives a transmission of sorts and he notes that the cruisers are "K'tinga" class...

  • qapl'a

  • your goal has been achieved

  • great clip well done!

  • You mean you did this yourself?! It looks as good as anything Hollywood has ever done! I am impressed.

  • well hmm i get confised with em cuz they look a lot like eachother.

  • The Ktinga is a refitted versions of the D7.

  • jus so ya no they arent K'Tingas those are D-7 class crusiers. K'tingas are in late TMP era (V, VI) and TNG

  • wrong, do your research

  • Excellent!

  • Looks pretty darn good to me! One of my favorite scenes in the movie, btw!

  • Awesome work!

  • Brilliant music. Love the "blaster beam" effect. How I miss Jerry Goldsmith. No reason to go the movies any more.

  • I agree with nostromo38, good images with great music = good times!

  • I have some digitized photos I made of V'Ger approaching earth. Earth looks more better than the one in the original one. But doing some pics of it but not the vids. But it looks damn good.

  • Forgot to mention, this vid is so good. Keep up the good work.

  • Thanks for all your hard work; this is very good...

  • I think it's done very very good! Only thing is the brightness of the Cruisers.

  • Youtube has a habit of darkening videos. It may not by the animator's fault.

  • It's an awesome vid. i think you got it 90% accurate to the actual scene

  • One of my fav scenes, and a clean rendition of the "Klingon Theme" that underwent so many reinstrumentations throught the movies and TNG and DS9. Just as an aside, I find it laughable taht people are complaining about the quality of the blacks when we're probably all viewing this on LCD screens. I think you did a great job on the color.

  • 6. Probably the biggest thing. The cloud is too grey looking. This baby needs to have more blue and black to the color scheme. And once you do that, play with the darkness settings. It should be as dark and blue as the film counterpart.

Other then that, I'm really impressed by the amount of work it must have taken you to achieve this. This is one of my all time favorite Star Trek movie moments and I absolutely love the amount of care you put into it.

  • 5. The cloud shows up way too early. That earie music cue that happens at 00:31 should start at 00:28 when the first sign of the cloud appears on screen.

  • 4. The sync is a little off. Since I've watched this film when I was about three, I had the images and sound memorized. Certain music cues go off too early and some appear too late during the rotate sequence. This is probably the hardest thing to correct.

  • 3. The detail on the hull surfaces needs to stand out more. I could make them out, but it still has a plain smoothness that the original series had that the film makers were not aiming for in this movie.

  • 2. The Klingon ships are way too bright and gray. I remember them having a dark bluish grey to them. Nothing major, but a brightness check will do great.

  • Very impressie, however I do have some comments to make.

    1. The Klingon ships are way too close to each other. It's almost like they're aligned perfectly side by side. Bring the cruiser on the right closer to the camera and push the cruiser on the left further away.

  • Wow. I just watched that part and compared it to your video and I must say, other than a few minor details, is a very excellent recreation.

  • Is the V'ger Cloud redone too?

  • Wake up people - this isvery beginning from the first movie: Star Trek The Motion Picture so badgerboyUK

all you have to do to see the whole thing....as you say it is to buy the film on DVD - right?

  • sweet, only another 2347 shots left and u got a whole film!!

  • Very well done! The pacing is perfect and the models look great. I'd say you nailed recreating that opening shot. good job!
