In fact this is not a true chromatic scale since the distance between the notes each of which he's playing on different strings, in other words when he's moving from one string to another is not a semitone but a whole tone, except for the strings B and G. F# may not be a member of A aeolian but it is in A dorian...which is like A to A with the notes of a G major scale.
