I always hated when the squire yells at Ben Gunn when he trips and falls, like give the guy a brake for gods sake, hes the one who found it all in the first place..and he lived alone on an island for 3 yrs so back the ef up squire
well I have to say, that treasure is more rightfully Ben and Johns, since they did the bloody work to acquire it, these others are just stealing it from the pirates..so who is the pirate and whos not?
A great Treasure Island ! I recommend the Walt Disney version and Long John Silver which is like 'Part 2' . Don't be put off and think it is too babyish . It's also very well acted Robert Newton is a great LJSilver and
Not my favorite version. Never liked Heston as Silver. Miscast in my opinion. But overall, it's a beautiful adoption. Great production value, and with many fine actors.
A magnificent story from the pen of the wondrous man the Samoans called "Tusitala" , Robert Louis Stevenson. This movie sent chills down my spine and brought back all the old memories of childhood: the tapping of Blind Pew's cane, the salt air, the treachery and adventure: no one could spin a tale like RLS.
So much great dialogue: "The dead men hang about your neck like millstones!" And, "You're a man to keep your word - we all know THAT!" Also, Smollett looks very dashing in his white shirt and bloody sling, sneering at the blood on Silver's blade.... Wonderful the way the camera holds on each of their faces as they gaze at the treasure.
Pete Postlethwaite ("George") just died a few weeks ago, great character actor, and God knows with a face he's got there's no need for make-up for a pirate...
I still remember this movie! when I was a little boy like 15 years ago it was my favourite adventure movie about treasure and pirates, with gorgeous music and sword fights, like in the old times;)
...I've been looking for DVD for many years but afraid it doesn't exist

Thanks for the movie! I used to watched it when I was a child, then I couldn't find the DVD (it doesn't exist yet) and I was afraid I could never watch it again! By the way, do u have it with French subtitles? lol (it would be even easier for me to watch it again :D )
Surely the best adaptation of the book. The Chieftains music is haunting, the scenery is beautiful, the acting is great, and I like the alternate ending that this movie portrays. Thank you for uploading this.
I keep thinking I can't appreciate this any more than I already do - and then I find something more to love. The music, the lines, the actors... and the beautiful Hispaniola!
Its a Kedge Anchor.... Most ships back then had atleast 3 anchors FYI. Kedges are for light currents and can indeed be used to winch a lightly grouded ship into blue water...
@starsofvictory : this is not a song, this is an irish tune composed by the Chieftains for the Movie. You can find it on their album "film cuts", they are a traditional irish band who played with anyone in the big music business from 70s to 2000s. This is beautifully aranged and the séquence is mighty !
I love how this movie follows the book so closely. Usually when a book is turned into a movie the movie goes completely off on it's own script. And John Silver what a character. He could give Jack sparrow a run for his money.
@BlissfulOasis Oh aye! So true that is, Blissful, so true that is! I read the book in recent months for the first time ever and when I saw this, I loved how faithful it was.
Long John Silver, possibly the best that ever was, and quite possibly the best that ever will be!!!
Unless of course you add anime into the mix, because Luffy of One Piece is pretty good too 8D
Thank you balehead for posting the best version of Treasure Island on film. Charleton Heston was still at the top of his game and Christian Bale showed all of his promise. Also, I loved the performance of the late, great Oliver Reed as Captain Billy Bones. Again, thank you.
Pretty amazing the way they got the Hispaniola under full sail - with not a single able-bodied seaman aboard, unless you count Jim and Ben Gunn. Hunter and Joyce are both landsmen, the Captain has that "nasty splinter wound" though he certainly pitches in wonderfully, Silver has one leg, and I can't see Squire and the Doctor much use aloft. On the voyage out, it took more than are left standing just to drop the mainmast sails! Also wonder who does the laundry... Joyce, maybe?
Love the looks on each of their faces when they see the treasure. It's so great to have this to freeze-frame, which I can't do with my VHS. As many times as I've watched it, I just never want this movie to end.
All I can is, if that was me, I'd be rolling around naked in that pile of gold.
