Massive thumbs up for choice of material (We're not worthy!) and the overall masterful shreddingness and personality you've displayed. Would love to hear you rock out on one particular song (yes this is a request): "Morph the Cat" from Fagen's so titled solo album. It didn't have a hot guitar solo but needed one!
@ApparentlyNigel Thanks for your comments Nigel [presumably]. Yes, I do know Morph The Cat well. I wouldn't mind having a go at this (one day). I do think , however, that Jon Herrington's guitar solo on the title track ain't that bad at all. It's pretty good.
@rolluprob You're welcome and I stand corrected on Herrington's solo on "Morph." It's pretty hot but just down amongst the horns somewhere... Now If we could just get Don Fagen to bring in Angus Young or Noel Gallagher to mix his next album (haha)
im typing out of sheer delight that there are actually other human beings left on this God forsaken planet that can hear what a phenominal piece of music this guitar solo is. I COMMEND ALL OF YOU for having the "ears to hear" what real talent is.....i can die now in peace knowing im not alone in this world ..HA...seriously though...GOD BLESS ALL U BRILLIANT SONS A BITCHES!!!
@oneman1970 Spot on, oneman1970!!! I remember first hearing the album and just being blown away by the soul, the mellow groove and that ass-kicking guitar solo that is so shredding and yet sounds so effortless. You are not alone in this world and I share your joy that others hear it and love it as well.
Right on!!! "Gaucho" is my favorite Steely Dan out of all of their five stars. Well, "everything has to go" certainly wasn't five stars, but whadaya going to do.
Nice job! My favorite guitar solo by one of my favorite Steely Dan guest stars. Ever heard the original demo of the original song? It's called "Were You Blind That Day." Same exact backing track with different lyrics. Don changed the words and I hear it's just because they wanted to keep Larry's solo and they hated the original lyrics.

My favorite guitar solo ever! An all too short masterpiece by the Great LC. I need to take the time to learn it and do it justice as you have my friend!
Second watching/listening and it is as good as ever - I play it a little different - but I bow to learn and improve. Agreement with the above fore-mentioned - the solo brings me out in goose bumps. Cuts to the soul immediately.
Life is NOT too short to rehearse it more. I always loved this solo. But what a subtle beast of a guitar solo. Even better than Kid Charlemagne. Carlton put together a serious piece of ART here. For those who have ears to hear.
I just saw SD live on Friday night. They played Third World Man. Yep. Live. It sounded as incredible as the original recording. Then came the guitar solo. It was performed flawlessly, full of winsome longing and bravado by Jon Herington. The big screens on either side of the stage focused on his hands.
Got a standing ovation in the middle of the song. Coulda cried. Rob, you just gave me the same chills as I got Friday night. It sure looks good on you...
man that was so great! I love that tune and Carlton is just one of my all time favorites and you played it so well!! Keep it up - you've got a great style - loved it.
I think that there are more Steely Dan fans now than ever before. :)
Great music never dies, it just grows and grows. To me they never sound dated because they never really 'belonged' in the first place, if you know what I mean. :) Peace, David.
David, I couldn't agree more. The quality is extremely high on nearly everything they produced, so it's bound to stand the test of time. I was blown away by them as an 18 yr. old college kid, and I still love revisiting now and again---I'm 35 now and I still get the same thrills and chills up my spine!
When I was 14 I had a ticket to see them at the Liverpool Stadium. They cancelled on the night and never played live again (not with a Steely Dan Baxter/Dias/Hodder-type line up).
Gives you some idea of my age. Loved them then, love them now - although not really keen on the new stuff. :)
Rob, You have found your true calling. Don't waste your time with trivial matters like work and paying bills, learn all the Dan's solo's, find yourself a time machine and arrive at the studio half an hour before Larry/Denny/Jay/Dean/Elliott/Jeff etc, that'll give Don and Walt something to think about!
Nailed and sealed it. Great stuff.

Larry Carlton' solo on Third World Man is my absolutely favourite guitar solo ever. No showing off at all, just pure, beautiful music!

From another Dan fan that was very cool. Perhaps some day I too will learn to play like that.

No mate. This is a Larry Carlton solo. The only solo Larry plays on Gaucho.
rolluprob 3 years ago
Mark Knopfler played on "Hey nineteen" on the "Gaucho" album.
downtwothenleft 3 years ago
Sorry, ill correct myself, it was Larry Carltons solo and Knopfler done the solo on "Time out of mind".
downtwothenleft 3 years ago
I don't think it matters who originally played it. That was smashing.
tiajuanat 3 years ago
This solo is originally played by Mark Knopfler, not Larry Carlton
andigoeb 3 years ago
No mate - Mark Knopfler did play a solo on the Gaucho album (Time Out Of Mind). This track is definitely LC.
rolluprob 3 years ago
Great tone and timing. Made the hair on my arms stand up. Hearing LC done this well makes me want to give up the guitar altogether.
