this contest was so damn long and eventually boring ...it seemed like you saw everyone do the same run 10 times ...me and my friend that i went with went outside twice to skate in the parking lot and hawk left one of the times we were out there...my friend said hi tony and hawk was such a baby back then that he made a dumb face and was a total dick ....hosoi left when we were out there too cuz he didn't win...i think i smoked a pack and a half of cigarettes in those 8 hours
my dad gave away my last skateboard set up from the 80's.......was a jeff kendall deck,indy trucks and bullet wheels.........i was well pissed off....still have a couple o boards though..
why is there a handrail in the skatepark hosoi is at in the beginning. i thought people didnt start hitting handrails til like the late 80s or something and that gonz, who came after hosoi, started grinding them

Miller is close, but not the same style- Miller def more tech, but still went FAST and BIG. Hosoi doesn't ollie out the ramp if you watch- he just macks those airs with speed-clanging all four wheels at the coping every landing. He didn't need any lip tricks

Hello. I'm from São Paulo-SP, Brazil (the South America's skateboarding capital) and in the 80's I saw the fight between Cristian Hosoi and Tony Hawk for the world hegemony. In that time, sure, we only dreamed, but today, I'm very proud to know that Bob Burnquist is the 'Pelé' (the King) of the skateboarding, like the Brazilian skateboarding is on the top of the world. (unfortuneately it still not happened with the Brazilian surfboarding). PS- Sorry 4 my bad english.

Sorry man but when it comes to making advances in skateboarding Mark has constantly progressed the most, and remained influential for the longest amount of time...I mean just look at his video days part, that part still has held up fairly well even in today's standards...The handrail he does toward the end is just as insane.

Hosoi was pure bio on vert, all air. he never had too many lip tricks or technical airs like hawk. Gonz did the FIRST handrail in competition in '86(oceanside), a year before this vid. gonz also could skat vert, just not in pro contest form. Natas never had any vert coverage, but the hydrant spin pretty much elevated him to icon status.

Hosoi had big airs and no ability to "street skate" any more than Cab or Lance mountain thats just not what they did, for the most part he and his pointless shaped board were for posers. Hosoi was actually influential in the street scene and was there from the begining. Anything new that was rad, Hosoi was there, and when vert died Hosoi went right to the streets and competed in the first ever "street" competition.
Actually I got my info from the documentary on his life (Rising Son). And yeah Hosoi did have his own board and company "the Hammerhead model" by Hosoi Skates founded in 1984. Hosoi skates had their boards manufactured by Skull Skates and then later NHS/Santa Cruz. Oh and by the way Hosoi went Pro when he was 14 skating for Sims Skateboards soooo yeah shut it.

I even own the Vision Holday Havoc video where Hosoi wins the highest air by doing a method grab over the measuring grid (10').

If you want to know about Hosoi watch the documentary called "Rising son" on his life. He was pro, He was the highest paid at the time, he was invited to the first ever X-games but never went due to his addiction. He started the board shaping revolution. Oh and he "shook the ramp". Bitches

that's not correct. both of these guys were very much pros. hosoi was never really known for his street, but i believe at one time in the 80's he was rated no.2 in the world behind hawk and caballero was 3rd maybe. long time ago

Hosoi was actually influential in the street scene and was there from the begining. Anything new that was rad, Hosoi was there, and when vert died Hosoi went right to the streets and competed in the first ever "street" competition.

Actually I got my info from the documentary on his life (Rising Son). And yeah Hosoi did have his own board and company "the Hammerhead model" by Hosoi Skates founded in 1984. Hosoi skates had their boards manufactured by Skull Skates and then later NHS/Santa Cruz. Oh and by the way Hosoi went Pro when he was 14 skating for Sims Skateboards soooo yeah shut it.

They both had pro modle boards. This is a pros only contest. And both these guys beat Tony Hawk in this comp. Mabey you don't consider him pro either but in 87 when this came out they were the top pros in the world.
