  • meth pride!

  • skating back then was so much more creative

  • gonz never use your hands to break a fall

  • I was also at this contest and it was long,,but we had a great time!!The skating in the parking lot in sub zero weather was fun!!I also went on the day they had the vert contest !!And the year before Natas ollied the cow!!!Surf Ohio was a great shop!

  • i want those vison pants

  • this contest was so damn long and eventually boring ...it seemed like you saw everyone do the same run 10 times ...me and my friend that i went with went outside twice to skate in the parking lot and hawk left one of the times we were out there...my friend said hi tony and hawk was such a baby back then that he made a dumb face and was a total dick ....hosoi left when we were out there too cuz he didn't win...i think i smoked a pack and a half of cigarettes in those 8 hours

  • Go Spandex!

  • "ollie style!" (falls on back 180)

  • You can't even compare these two.

Mark is a legend for being a street skating pioneer,

Christian on the other hand, is a legend in pools, and just vert in general.

They specialized in completely different things,

    you can't really compare.

  • the gonz is the shit

  • HOSOI all damn day yo

  • mark wins hands down. "ollie style"

  • i dont like hasoi tbh,

  • holy shit that front board transfer from the gonz was gnarly

  • Comment removed

  • funny how stupid you are

  • Schtank Skateboards loves this!!!

  • Schrulpin! Anyone from northern cali remember that word? Means shredding to the extreme!

  • GONZ

  • Damn fuckin right those were the days to remember .

  • Mark was such a great skater, just really didn't get the big press like hosoi. I still have my original vision mark gonzales deck from '86!

  • my dad gave away my last skateboard set up from the 80's.......was a jeff kendall deck, indy trucks and bullet wheels.........i was well pissed off....still have a couple o boards though..

  • wow, i would die to have that deck.

  • my two favourite skaters

    & Black Flag.

    Extra Bonus

  • well that was exciting

  • natas tried a handrail at oceanside in '86, most onlookers didn't even understand what he was attempting.

  • v=CRxhraHXtIw&#t=4m14s

  • why is there a handrail in the skatepark hosoi is at in the beginning. i thought people didnt start hitting handrails til like the late 80s or something and that gonz, who came after hosoi, started grinding them

  • i love it . nose manny just to be a dick......yes man

  • ish!- those cats shred! watch them both easily clear the box with sick launches! 2 different styles from 2 All-Time legends.

  • Legends

  • one of the best ever, if not the best. Started it all

  • yeah but ust remember like fully flared those wallrides would have been sick in todays skating and andrew reynolds bs nosegrab in the steep wallride quarter is exactly like this but everything is getting inspired by each other and more and more tricks comes all the time the happiness the skateboard gives us will stay forever =)

  • Legends

  • /watch?v=fFH0khjgA0U

  • i love it how hosoi is always rocking some CONVERSE

  • damn hosoi has got smooth style

  • i dont know the gonz is more street and hosoi is more vert if u know what i mean.

  • back then thats like saying how can you miss a 360 hardflip if your pro.

  • yeah your right pros must land everything in the world first try

  • wow you a dick

  • no actually the im saying the truth

the other guy was the dick

just because ur pro doesnt mean you land EVERYTHING every try

so dont call me a dick cocksucker

  • Hosoi got the Gonz here, awesome vid!

  • Savannah Slamma

  • why is there a hand rail? what were they thinking jeezus

  • Fuck your mother noob..

    this is not skate gay..

    fuck you shit

  • savannah slamma

  • Sk8n to madonna, biker shorts, tanks, hair extensions- man Hosoi was nuts but he had the balls to pull it off- plus if you ever find anyone who powers as hard as hosoi on vert lemme know. Miller is close, but not the same style- Miller def more tech, but still went FAST and BIG. Hosoi doesn't ollie out the ramp if you watch- he just macks those airs with speed-clanging all four wheels at the coping every landing. He didn't need any lip tricks

  • BTW, Holmes is sporting hair extentions here, spandex? shorts, and a muscle shirt? more like the QUEEN of style! king of the cat-walk. right , fred? right said fred. lol.

  • to me Hosoi had style but he wasn't as technical as Natas and Gonzales...

i like Paulo alot becuase he STILL sk8's with that ol'skool late 80's early 90's technical style like Natas and Gonzales...

Paulo,Natas and Gonzales are sk8 GODZ in my eyes...

    WORD UP...

  • Hahahah!! Hosoi was really skating to the Madonna song: "Dress you Up"!! Very stylish/fashionable...:P

    Wallie at 1:24!! :D

  • lol

    back when skateboarding was ghey

  • that backside olllie hosoi does at 1:18 is so sick

  • hosoi bitches!!!!!!!!!!

  • The Kings...

soccer = Pelé, basketball = Michael Jordan, tenis = Federer, surfboarding = kelly Slater, skateboarding = Tony Hawk or Bob Burnquist? (For me, is Bob. And for you? Who is the king?)

  • fucking dustin dollin

  • Hello. I'm from São Paulo-SP, Brazil (the South America's skateboarding capital) and in the 80's I saw the fight between Cristian Hosoi and Tony Hawk for the world hegemony. In that time, sure, we only dreamed, but today, I'm very proud to know that Bob Burnquist is the 'Pelé' (the King) of the skateboarding, like the Brazilian skateboarding is on the top of the world. (unfortuneately it still not happened with the Brazilian surfboarding). PS- Sorry 4 my bad english.

  • mark was better, but christian was,and will always be my favorite skater,i grew up watching him battle tony hawk.

  • That frontside channel ollie to bert slide at 1:07 is so friggin' smooth...

  • christian finding jesus is all bullshit

  • I love it when colossal egos make colossal fuck ups. You had everything (except maybe an education). Glad you are out now, have learned your lesson, and are trying to make a difference.

  • I love it when jealous people don't know that their jealous and bitter. You watched this guy fall to rock bottom and you enjoyed it, Pathetic.

  • the gonz will always be the winner. he never loses. except against chris cole and rodney mullen of course.

  • i Respect both OF these GUYS greatly..but in my opinioN....NATAS KAUPAS was better then both of them at Street...

NATAS is the KING of street SK8iNG...

    and KING of stYLE....

Paulo DIaz is alsO a sick ass street sk8r as well....

NATAS and PAULO = stYLE GODZ

  • true,christian was mostly vert.

  • Sorry man but when it comes to making advances in skateboarding Mark has constantly progressed the most, and remained influential for the longest amount of time...I mean just look at his video days part, that part still has held up fairly well even in today's standards...The handrail he does toward the end is just as insane.

  • NATAS and GONZ are the two Godfathers side by side dude!! What r u talking about?? Natas ollied the highest and was the most innovative in STREET, but Gonz was an innovator as well...I disagree with you on the style thing, HOSOI was the true king of STYLE.

and Paulo Diaz shreds, I love him too, but I wouldn't go so far to call him a style god...

    p.s. peep my vids.

  • Chris Miller was the king of style on vert, and in the upland combi, no one Ever skated it better than him. watch the Gullwng video,"molecules in motion" . Hosoi was pure bio on vert, all air. he never had too many lip tricks or technical airs like hawk. Gonz did the FIRST handrail in competition in '86(oceanside), a year before this vid. gonz also could skat vert, just not in pro contest form. Natas never had any vert coverage, but the hydrant spin pretty much elevated him to icon status.

  • I am surprised by the responses here, the Gonz was one of the most influential and creative people ever in the sport. Hosoi had big airs and no ability to "street skate" any more than Cab or Lance mountain thats just not what they did, for the most part he and his pointless shaped board were for posers. I skated for years never reaching near either of their levels but Hosoi is still a punk.

  • Poor guy. If only he was stayed clean. The Hammerhaed - One of the best shapes ever!

  • try riding an old ,flat, skull skates hosoi board today. It'll suck for you.the best shape ever is what the current , modern skateboard has evolved into.look what D.Way hyas done on a skateboard in the last 10years.he aint riding a wack phallic shape, sorry sir.

  • Relax! Of course it's evolved! I didn't say it was functional, it was just a nice shape...

  • oh,sorry I wasnt meaning to be taken more seriously than i take myself.i mean look at the preceeding dialogue, it would be a funny ass movie script.

  • It's cool...

  • that is not even am standard nowadays

  • In the video he says "True street skating at its best". Funny that was actual street skating back then. Now its called old school vert. Thats my style.

  • hell yes he was the shit...he's easily the Jordan of skateboarding, but life had to catch up with him sooner or later and the drugs his buddies gave him turned him into a junkie, he's clean now but won't easily be forgot for the things he did in the sport....if you don't believe watch """"the rising sun: the legend of christian hosoi""""

  • awesome movie... should be on everyone's to do before i die list.

  • "The drugs his buddies gave him"

Jeez. You don't force Crystal Meth down anyones throat. He was caught with a fuckin' POUND of the shit. He's lucky he didn't do more time.

  • Heard he was the shit back then?? NO offense at all, but he was the best.. They did not call him CHRIST for nothing. He is now clean, and skating professionally again! He is still the shit in my book..

  • i dunno hosoi kinda does bigger tricks but something about the gonz, i dunno i guess the style, it looks like he was just cruising around with no pre planned run then again i could be wrong

  • i heard hosoi was the shit back then...

but then he became a drug addict...

  • hosoi totally won, gonz fell off his board

  • i think that i could of pulled off gonzales's run.

  • hah that shows how much skateboarding has evolved.

that 180 on the box and 180 is so simple

  • i vote for mark gonz.

  • Sick dudes

  • i think i would have to say hosoi won this round

  • old skool rocks!!!!!!!

  • who won that round?

  • Ha... little question. I love the SST soundtrack.

  • I wish people would get off the hosoi /drug kick. The guy has found a new life and is successful and it really bothers alot of losers out there that make the negative comments.

  • can't go wrong with gonz

  • Notice there isnt ONE flip.

    :)

  • it was in the 80s...the only person that did flips then was rodney mullen and that was on flat standing still

  • yeah i know rodney said the kickflip was landed on accident lol he didnt mean to do it.

    lol

  • In the competition, I believe it is Tommy Guerrero's 180 kickflip on the embankment that wins him the competition.

  • he's the only one in the contest that does a kickflip. the crowd goes wild. funny now

  • I can't find the guerrero part from this contest.... Do you know what it's called?

  • I believe the comp was dubbed "Ohio Skateout" but I could be wrong as it's been well over 15 years since I've watched it.

  • watching ths video makes me thin,"Man I could have won that- I can do boardslides and 180 Ollies!".

  • what year is this?

  • It says Ohio skateout, but it looks like the course from Savannah Slamma.

  • Its Ohio Savannah didnt have that bowled corner or that bench. Thats the bench that Tommy G got his board stuck in and wasted his whole run trying to get it out.

  • 87-88, pre h-street.

  • I'm talking about the song that plays from 0:07-0:16

  • Thanks for posting! Brings back some good memories!

  • why do they move there board will there moving

  • Momentum and speed.

  • I dont think holmes was on speed back at that time, i dont think he even was called holmes yet.

  • Momentum and speed.

  • Man, I could still stab my friends for flaking out on taking me to this shit. lol

  • gonz did great on his run but Christ killed it!

  • Does anybody know the name of the song in the beginning of the video?

  • i know the song is from Gone

Its the first song from Gone II But never too gone

  • jungle law

  • It says it right on the fucking screen, dumbass.

  • Did you ssay that to me?

  • Wow! I remember wearing Jams just like Hosoi. Christ Im old...

  • Holy shit seahag69 we all get it!You fucking hate Hosoi and appearently think hes a crack witch I dont but you did like 7 comments starting from like 3 months ago we stopped giving a fuck like 2 months ago so give it fucking rest! And dont think I m so guy who kisses hosios ass cause the first time I even seen hosio skate!

  • check out this dude(seahhag69) comments on Hosoi its like he has some kind of jealous hard-on for him haha

  • backside ollie at 1:17 was FAR before it's time.

  • Hosoi Forever!

  • hosoi is lame - im glad he went to prison ...

  • seahhag69, ur a fag, that comment was ghey- go look up knitting or whatever it is you do.

  • coolgfag17 - you should check some of my other comments i have posted about this pseudo in the past - batcanbat seems to like my comments also .

  • seahhag69 - what makes you think i give a fuck bitch

  • hosoi's run is soooo gnar

the gonz is super rad though

  • gonz is sick, but hosoi's run killed gonz's run.

  • Is this Savanah Slamma????LOL

  • rodney mullen at 2:51? nope, just a camera man hahahha. it does looks really simmilar though. only, one thing is missing...the socks!

  • hosoi wasnt pro in the us?? haaaa do you live in a cave?? up there in canada

  • when hosoi was in prison he got raped by a bunch of big black guys and now he has to wear a diaper .

  • the gonz friggen founded blind, what the hell is wrong with you? he's up there with mullen when it comes to pioneering street skating..

  • Watch Rising Son: The Legend of Christian Hosoi which was directed by one of Christians closest friends, Cesario Montaño, then comment. Hosoi has been my favortie skater since I started skating. I even own the Vision Holday Havoc video where Hosoi wins the highest air by doing a method grab over the measuring grid (10').

  • roskater- you're right man! I'm here to put this shit to rest. I designed Hosoi's line for Canada. He was kicked out of the U.S. for steroids. Where do you think the maple revolution came from?!- Canada- he was allowed to compete in the states but his boards were never allowed to come into this Country. Get some education retards!

  • Steroids? Are you retarded, seriously? They don't drug test skaters, not then and definetly not today.

  • but concave was invented in huntington beach, thats why he had to move out here and creep around in the alleys so he wouldn't get deported. he was smuggling in maple, then tradin it for cocaine speed heroin weed acid mushrooms and Jimmy'Z gear!!!!!

  • Ill say this for the last time, Hosoi wasnt pro in the states only in Canada, I dont know where you guys get your information, Hosoi didnt even have his own board, the competition I went to he had to borrow rob robskopps board.

  • Hosoi was a pothead and often lost his board.

  • hosoi was a crack head and often sold his ass for a hit .

  • seriuosly chilly what the hell are you talking about? everyone but you knows that neither of these guys were pro. what are you talking about him losing his board, he nver had a board to lose with his name on it.

  • If you want to know about Hosoi watch the documentary called "Rising son" on his life. He was pro, He was the highest paid at the time, he was invited to the first ever X-games but never went due to his addiction. He started the board shaping revolution. Oh and he "shook the ramp". Bitches

  • i love christian's caveman

  • hahaha, this was funny.I liked the ollie into layback! But the outfit....too much.

I wonder how Mark is doing? He must be still in jail....

  • Mark Rogowski went to jail, not Gonz...

  • my comment is concerning roskater

  • Wow you guys are smart.

  • who won this battle?

  • hosoi won cuz he was high on meth witch gave him the upper hand due to jet lag. he cheated

  • this is christian hosoi, I was never pro and neither was mark

  • yeah dude you spelled your name wrong the week before and you mentioned easyrider magazine i didnt know they covered sk8ing dude your just some doucherocket trying to fuck with people you probably cant sk8 or do anything well for that matter have fun spending the rest of your miserable existence in your moms basement

  • my skate skills are beyond what youll ever see in Boys Life, Im the best the fact that you question me proves one thing you are a poser, how did you know I live in my moms basement by the way.

  • package!?!? that you ole boy?hmmm....ro-skater? rhode island skater? i was havin such a hoot readin whut these retards gon' argue bout. neither HO-soi nor mark bomber barnett ever really turned grand national pro. freddie smith, now that dude knew how to ride.coo-coo.

  • Gonz was sponserd by vision when he was 16, In '86 him and Kaupas where the first to document skating handrails. Would you like me to school you on his life as well.

  • when hosoi was in prison i was boinking his wife jeniffer , she has a really big snatch.

  • To all the teeny bopper wannabe sk8ers.They wer both pro riders.mark was with vision and hosoi i cant remember but i know this is true. The kickflip ruined the shape of all skateboards

  • Mark is now married to kelly ripa

  • Wrong Mark dumbass. Mark Consuelos is married to Kelly Ripa. You have no idea of what you are talking about kid.

  • neither one of these guys ever made it pro, they always skated under an amateur status.

  • that's not correct. both of these guys were very much pros. hosoi was never really known for his street, but i believe at one time in the 80's he was rated no.2 in the world behind hawk and caballero was 3rd maybe. long time ago

  • according to the latest Easy Rider magazine, they were pros but only in Canada.

  • Hosoi was actually influential in the street scene and was there from the begining. Anything new that was rad, Hosoi was there, and when vert died Hosoi went right to the streets and competed in the first ever "street" competition.

  • chilly where do you get your facts from, do you just makes shit up and hope people beleive it.

  • Actually I got my info from the documentary on his life (Rising Son). And yeah Hosoi did have his own board and company "the Hammerhead model" by Hosoi Skates founded in 1984. Hosoi skates had their boards manufactured by Skull Skates and then later NHS/Santa Cruz. Oh and by the way Hosoi went Pro when he was 14 skating for Sims Skateboards soooo yeah shut it.

  • What are you, retarted? They've both been pro for years!

  • yeah whos retarted, Ive been skating since Bob hurricane Hannah has been, Christian Hasoi was more into bikes than boards and never was pro, gonzalez, was about to go pro in the us, but then got into acting and married Kelly Ripa and decided not to.

  • Dude this is a pro contest. I have the whole tape. Gonz is even in the Vision cloths (his pro sponcer that made his pro board).

  • dude you are a moron hosoi was pro and so was gonzalez in the late 80s christian had his own sk8 company shit in the 80s there was only 2 sk8ers winning vert comp hawk and hosoi i think you should google him and read a little before you run your mouth

  • have you ever picked up a skateboard dude and what the hell is google.

  • They both had pro modle boards. This is a pros only contest. And both these guys beat Tony Hawk in this comp. Mabey you don't consider him pro either but in 87 when this came out they were the top pros in the world.
