does it matter if you have a belt or a tourque tube? i have a trex 500 esp with all upgraded parts. should i have to worry about this? im brand new to flying and want to avoid major malfunctions.
@killirishred I know Align has made some changes to the components and their kits, this was a first production kit. I have not done any experimentation on TT kits, but, others have reported less frequency of occurrences or no occurrences with TTs. The only advice I can give is keep in mind, not solely the belt was responsible for the static production.
Hi there nice video and info on static,I am new to this hobby and I've got a walkera60 can you please tell me the name of this anti static spray and where I can get it.
Much more has been learned since this video. Static is produced result from the humidity in your area, or lack of it. THis in combination with the other components make different areas more subject to static production. There are plenty of people flying WITHOUT any mods, but in my opinion, it's like flipping a coin, when/if the conditions are right, it could affect you. I highly recommend the stock mods, I have not had an issue since.
The plastic parts are part of the problem with static production. The pen is an AC Voltage Detector from your local home improvement store. This one is called a "Live Wire", there is another called "Greenlee"
I have been running my trex 500 with 2.4ghz ar6200 reciever and with spektrum dx6i and mine has never cut out, also i don't use spray, do u recommend i use some, i have been flying my trex 500 for about 4 months now and have had no problems, should i put anti-static spray on my trex 500.
I don't recommend the spray as a preventative measure. The spray was just to show the presence of static. While it does eliminate the static, it is only temporary. I do however recommend the other mods in the other videos.
Not necessarily, if you check out all the videos and threads, you will see there are charges which are not only being produced by the VDG effect of the belt, but also from the gear / motor pinion. So, will a TT help ? Absolutely. Will it solve all your problems, Maybe ?
hey thanks for the vid!! im moving up from a blade 400 and am preparing to buy a trex 500 (over the 450-or should i go with the 450?) anyway, what do you suggest i go with to prevent as much ESD as possible? go with all aluminum gearing and glass body? thanks again man
First, if you are flying a 400 sized heli, I would highly recommend the Trex 500. It's a great heli. You will love it. I posted another video with the modifications I did, which eliminated the static production in the tail/ boom / boom block. I think with those modifications you are safe. If you want to be extra cautious, you can use the static spray before flight, but I am not certain it is necessary. I use the spray to show the presence of static and it was not meant to be a "fix". Thanks
Thanks Man, I just picked up a 500 and was hearing about this at the LHS. Went over to Helifreak and been looking around. Guess I will take that precaution and use the Static Guard.
I found the spray lasted anywhere between 7-10 flights, but I abandoned the idea of using the spray everytime and installed aluminum upgrade parts and modifications to defeat the static production. I may start using it again just as a safety precaution, but I don't think it is necessary and is only temporary.
Hey Gino, The Helicopter is a Trex 500 CF, the Detection device is a "Live Wire" AC Voltage detector. For what ever reasons it picks up the ESD coming off the belt and gears. Further experiments can be seen elsewhere. Email me for a link.

Install a torque tube and your worries will go away.

Wow.... I didn't know this was becoming that wide spread. There are modifications you can do to eliminate the static production also.

I'll be damned! :-)
You don't even have to apply it to the belt!
