The late Ralph Escovedo,Shiela E's Uncle told me when his brother Coke joined Santana, the song oye como va was a last minute song that Coke requested to rehearse for the album Abraxis, Carlos agreed & it went well so Coke sparked the Idea apparently.Cachao is definately the bass line originater, I'm Puerto Rican from the Bay Area & I"m glad Carlos put his version out,Its sad that Puente had some bitterness & maybee justifyable for his claim but its cool to hear this song on Rock & soul Radio
I understand about songs not rightfully acknowledged or credited to the original writer. My late father was Richie Giraldez ,song writer, conga player,he wrote the song "Vagabundo"& sold the rights to the band "EL Gran Combo" on 1 condition that his kids would be mentioned on the studio track & THEY DID NOT. The great singer Andy Montanez was the vocalist on the album & he would tell people during gigs that he wrote it for his kids,he was eventually confronted by family members & changed his tune
Actually what I'm sure (if you listen closely) Tito said in reality is that he "did not write the song" but that since he'd been doing it and recorded it in 1963, that Carlos "gave him the writer (composer) credit"! It is believed (and documented) that Cuban born, bass player Cachao is the real composer and that makes plenty sense to me and anyone who knows the real history of this music (and music business)!!
@TheJazzydrummer You are refering to "Chanchullo" by Israel Lopez"Cachao".Tito recorded "Oye Como Va" in 1960.Both Themes have similarities in their respectives Chords.
also if you listen closely to el danzon almendra by orquesta aragon about half way thru you can listen to oye como va,so yeah,if somebody stole from somebody i guess the cubans got ripped off pretty bad.
Nobody stole anything from anybody. If somebody capitalized on cuban music was the Puerto Rican brothers after Fidel stoped cubans from traveling to theU.S.
Carlos Santana took a song that had no electric guitar solo on it and made it big, is it his fault? Was Tito mad when ths checks started coming from author's rights? I bet you not!
Carlos Santana made it big in a very closed market, nobody before him did the rock "Crossover" as succesfully as he did.
LMAO,HELLO''''''' are you not listening to the video. Tito's own words tell it like it is. This song was not written as a crossover, and SANTANA bastardized it with TECNO CRAP. OYE as played here is the original and still the best.
@kontiki78 without cuban music comercial name salsa wouldn't exist after machito,Mario Bauza, xavier cougat Dessy Arnaz, beny More among others cuban musicians and singers fania was born
BYE BYE MISS AMERICAN PIE was written about the end of the ROCK AND ROLL. I wish someone would write about when LATIN MUSIC DIED, the day Tito was taken from us. When they tried to equate Salsa as all encompassing latin music that was the beginning. Dancing with the stars is another joke. These people wouldn't know a Cha Cha Cha Mambo if it hit them in the head. They play songs with no relationship to the dance.MORONS, All that does is bastardize the real feel and meaning of Mambo and Cha Cha
I remember when Santana came out with his record, TITO was pissed. Santana never gave Tito his respect and recognition that he deserved. Tito wrote OYE and was playing it long before Santana did. Not only did Santana steal the song from Tito on one of his renditions Santana stole a line from Joe Cuba's EL PITO, I'LL NEVER GO BACK TO GEORGIA. TITO EL REY DE MAMBO we miss you and no matter what you will always be the KING. R*I*P*
Thank you for posting , Tito was the best we had for a long time , I am sure his fans will appreciate the information.
