As a former U-2 pilot, the information provided is still factual. Sure, they are U-2S's now, Alconbury is but a memory (helped shut it down), and so on. There's a U-2 airborne somewhere right now.
It was nice to see Dave Helmsley as a young Capt/interviewee. He was the last commander at Alconbury.......
Excellent video, was my life as a dragon keeper for 13+ years at Beale, Alconbury, Osan, and many other Locations. Loved the plane and the U-2/TR-1, was a sad day when I left in 1992. I knew everyone in this video, Thanks for the trip through memory lane.
I served as a communications maintainence specialist on these aircraft when this video was made. I recognize the pilots and several of the ground crew. It was produced in the late 80's.
Nice old video. My grandfather was life support on the U-2 from 1964 at Edwards until he retired from the Air Force in 1971. Then he was Chief of life support at NASA Ames at Moffett Field from 71-94. Grew up with this aircraft. The U-2 never gets old.
To all the Top Gear fans, there is a video of James May going up in a U-2 that can be found on youtube. Check it out if you haven't seen it yet. Thanks for the upload airboyd, I always look forward to seeing your vids in my subscriptions!!
Thanks Boyd, I grew up around NAS Moffett Field in Mountain view where three of these were flown for NASA. It was a great (and rare) sight to see one lifting off and going almost straight up on departure. It looks like this was a new crew orientation film for incomming pitlots and their famalies. It's funny how something that was probobly classified a few years ago is now showing up here on youtube. Thanks again
Their choice of music is... I don't know they should have used Pink Floyd, hands down. The perfect psychedelic / industrial, head up in the skies music. :P
(Imagine, Welcome to the machine... playing!!)
Fantastic video though. Thanks for sharing. And this of course isn't Groom Lake because of the trees, right? :P
