I live on ford island and skate it check out my videos for a inside look at ford island, they rebuilt the tower, and the air field is gone my house is on top of it.
What a great find this is for me! Not only did I used to live in Hawaii, but I worked at Pearl Harbor for many years. And it was my great honor to have known Admiral Clarey personally -- truly a great man. I left Hawaii before the opening of this bridge, though I have made the same trip by boat time or two. This is just awesome to be able to experience. Seeing the marina (where I enjoyed many cold beers over the years) and the Bowfin along the way was a real trip down Memory Lane. Thanks!
@neesayer I was stationed in Pearl and worked AT CINCPACFLT while Admiral Clarey was in command. I had to deliver a report to him every morning. I could walk into his office. He would great me by my first name No coming to attention , we would chat for minute and then I would leave. Admiral Hyland was the same. Gentleman all the way. They treated the enlisted man with respect. I also got to met Admiral Mccain at his house. I might as well through in Admiral Zumalt also.
@baileytexan Thanks for sharing that! I worked at the Submarine Museum for many years and Admiral Clarey had an office there. My work area was right next door and we would talk a lot about his years in the Navy and the people he remembered. He might have even mentioned you once or twice, who knows? He and Mrs. Clarey were always kind and gracious to me. I never saw them treat anyone else any differently. They were special. Sounds like you know what I mean when I say that.
@baileytexan is it true that the control tower isnt the same one from 1941 .we were told that by our bus driver that took us out to ford island ..it was my first visit to oahu and i will be visiting each year from now on ..had the best time of my life ..please keep ford island as it is ...thank you
I visited the Pacific Aviation Museum 10 days after it's opening a few years ago. It is a great tribute to those who fought against the Japanese attack in 1941. I have fond memories of the Museum and of Ford Island. I (hjbpnb) posted a few photos of Ford Island on Google Earth and on Picasa . My favorite is the one of the Control Tower which is right outside the front door of the main building. I'm glad to see the Museum is growing and hope to go back there some day.
Ford Island is a designated National Historic Landmark. I am currently at Ford Island. The former Luke Field will not be touched. This Island is VERY touchy with the Navy. No Admiral wants anything to do with being the one that screwed with it. And they won't. I am here frequently. This place still gives me goose bumps everytime I cross the bridge.
Unfortunately, the airfield is no longer operational. Base housing has encroached along the sides of it and it probably won't be too long until the field itself is taken over. I think it's likely that the airfield will be someday relegated to others that befell the same fate - to a small stone marker recognizing what it was - amidst other base structures.
Wow. All we had were 2 barracks and a small exchange. Nothing like what it is today. It's sad to see things change, but the land wasn't doing anything.
the paths are restricted to just the Missouri or the Aviation Museum/Ford Island area. These videos are probably pretty rare now as, the last time I visited a few weeks ago (to the Missouri), they have forbidden photography from the Bus. Aloha.
Ford Island is still an active USN facility. rows of Enlisted and Officers' housing are cropping up all over it around Luke Field.
it's still active. unless you have a DoD sticker, you aren't driving to the mighty mo (in dry dock anyhow until jan 2010). you'll have to take the bus

what will become of Ford Island? I so SOOooo hope it will be preserved especially the airfield. I'm so dying wanting to land there(as a civilian).

I can't believe they have a bridge now. Is Ford Island still an active base? Can tourist walk all over it or just the Missouri?
