Jimi Hendrix was cited in a 1969 interview shortly after Woodstock: Interviewer: "So Jimi, what's it like to be the best guitarist in the world?" Jimi: "I don't know, ask Rory Gallagher".[37][38] from Wikipedia
I haven't found it on YouTube, but I heard a recording once where Rory played a Zydeco tune - sounded just like he was born in a Louisianna swamp. He could play anything!
Appreciating today how, even in easy songs, Rory Gallagher rarely resorted to strumming his way through. His style always seemed to max out a chord or scale. Makes most other guitarists seem lazy,--especially power chorders. Yes, you can hit a chord hard, but can you massage that puppy like Rory? Ring the bell when you can!
Great guitarist/songwriting, especially on this tune and early hits. So very different from the usual suspects of his time. He is using open e tuning, I just realized looking from another video. The change up sounds eery and this is how it is done.
The guitar rhythm is not typical of any song I know of. Very original.
Bravo Rory. I stood in the back of an auditorium in Munich, about 1972, and did not know I was witnessing greatness. Attitude makes up for any criticism about technique.
Of course, we love and recognize Rory's talent and contribution, but Clapton needn't apologize for anything he's done.
I saw Rory then, and I saw Cream too, and let me throw Hendrix into it, and Beck, and Page (with the Yardbirds and Led'), and the Allmans, and Lee et.al. ...all special in their own ways.
@SuperAmin1950 I said underrated, all but Jeff Beck and Alvin Lee still carry weight. Besides Alvin Lee, Jimi blew those Englishmen away. Yes, they all are great I hate that Clapton's on a pedestal who Hendrix embarrassed and thought Winwood could play better gets the light. I only referred to Eric and I know I'm right, he was a hypocrite doing Michelob advertising while a recovered addict and I have friends that play as good.

@MedeaTor John Squire comes to mind, his playing is so subtle it's unreal. Listen to MAde of stone

This is a great "guitar hero" pic of Rory at 3:10 -- put the man in black clothes and you've got Ritchie Blackmore, hands down!

@1958marky Haha I see what you mean. Type in "Johnny Winter Be careful with a fool", the bass player looks so much like Blackmore!

@GuitArch54 Very original, played in open E for the slide guitar parts I would think, it's for sure a melody only he could play....
