This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. But I imagined being someone who had never seen the movie, and trying to understand this video- I burst out laughing when the kid appears reading a book and shouting BE CONFIDENT! whoever hasnt seen the movie was probably like what the f was that?!?!
I agree with you, DBZenith. Those Sphinx statues did have a some nice VISIBLE racks, even though they were supposedly on this FAMILY-ORIENTED movie. Otherwise, this entire scene scared the crap out of me as well - just like all of those other scenes with Gmork, the wolf that was supposed to hunt and kill Atreyu.
@malestrom1000 I object to your assertion that breasts are somehow inappropriate for a 'family movie'. What do you think little baby Jessop has been suckling for the first months of his life?
I always enjoyed the idea from mythology of how sphinxes were keepers of riddles and mysteries. This movie really inspired a LOT of my writing over the years. This scene more than any others perhaps. Love it! :D
in the original novel the sphinx´s eyes are ALWAYS open.^^ If ye try to pass and they keep their eyes open, you freeze and have to answer ALL riddles of our world. when atreju passes through successfully he looks back he sees that the sphinxes had closed their eyes.
After seeing the knight get fried I think the only sane course of action would be to start scaling a cliffside to get around. No quest is worth incineration.
@cjwright79 Yep, after that I would do the same. Besides it's like someone mentioned earlier on, this scene is slighty altered from the book. I believe the knight is a refference to Sir Huunreck whom Bastian meets in the second half of the book, and for whom he creates the dragon Smerg (who was shown in the second film). Another difference is the fact that the Southern Oracle is represented as a bigger (blue) version of the Sphinx Gate, which was not so in the novel.
@cjwright79 Well, that would make sense except he could only reach the next gate by going through this gate first. The gate would eventually lead him to the Southern Oracle who would then provide him with the answers he so desperately needed. And, of course, a warrior such as he could not back down from a challenge.
You know how moms sometimes give those little pearls of wisdom to their kids as they drop them off for school. Like "Make good choices, sweetie!" or something. No lie, my mom used to say "Be confident, Atreyu! Confidence!" Man, talk about embarrassing...XD
I remember HOW SCARED I was as little girl whenever I saw him near the Sphinxes..............when they opend their eyes....omg...I still am. And I am 35 now! Dear God....time has passed and I didnt notice.......wonderful times when you were a child and belived in such things......phantasy is the greatest gift. blessed the people who invent such stories...
One day I wished, absolutely ALL music would be released on a 2 CD soundtrack-CD. I already wrote to Klaus Doldinger`s official page, but I got no answer....
Atreyu was paralyzed because he was (obviously) admiring those giant stone boobs, and he just didn't want to go
in fact, now that I'm older, I think that this scene (very different from the book) looks like a sexual rite of passage for Atreyu; he overcame his fear/indifference of women when he survived the Sphinx's trap...some deep shit here for a kid's movie eh? heheheeh
@JoeTyler85 I think you may be right. It's even more interesting when you realize that the situation is being played out with enough actors to represent man at all stages in life - the child, the young man and the old man.
when I saw this as a kid, I had no idea what boobs were. When the sphynxs incinerated that knight, I felt that I would have nightmares for years.... This movie gave me the chills...
I dont know why I never watched this movie when I was a kid (Im in my 20s now), but I just watched it for the first time yesterday. This was definitely the coolest scene..
i saw the claw of the sphinx jiggle a rubbery jiggle as the horseman's weapon hit it when he fell. i never noticed that before. oh my. I thought those sphinxes were made of solid rock. what a bummer~!
@stardappledgreen if you look closely you can see circular horse tracks leading away from the gate, looks like the horse turned around and went back home... guess the horse didn't feel its own worth either
@IllusionDan In the book, in order to see the Southern Oracle, Atreyu had to pass through the gates because without crossing one gate, he couldn't be able to see or reach the other gates, meaning he wouldn't be able to reach the Southern Oracle. He can't just fly there. It's also kind of a rite of passage thing that has to be done alone. It's to test to see if he was pure of heart and had a pure reason to see the Southern Oracle.
@IllusionDan Because the Sphynx would release her Sphynx-ter and blast that overgrown flying cocker spaniel in midair with a huge lightning bolt straight outta her ass!! lol
@IllusionDan Because over the sphynx there's hoting but an empty plain, you gotta get through the gates to see what's behind them, They forgot to mention that in the movie, I think. Actually, they skipped over a lot of things, that's why the book is way better. But the movie is incredibly good too!
@Danifail146 so... he couldn't have had Falcor come flying through the two sphinx? and just kind throw him through it? Oh wait its a kids movie not a lolwtf movie :(
@IllusionDan Because you have to pass through it to get to the next one, not over it. It's like the gateway to another dimension kind of thing. It's explained in the book.
@IllusionDan Atreyu needed to pass the gates in order to reach the Southern Oracla. If falcor had simply flew him over the gates, nothing would have been there.
@IllusionDan Fantasia is the world of human imagination after all, so maybe it's impossible to get to the Southern Oracle without going through the gates. =)
This terrified me as a child. I was four years old and we watched this at school on a 'rainy playtime' when they showed everyone a video instead of letting us go outside. Without a doubt this was the scariest moment in this film. Wrong of the school to show it to kids so young - that's why it's a PG and not a U!
This was drastically changed from the book. In the book whether or not the sphinxes opened their eyes was COMPLETELY random- which made them much more scary, as even the worthy were just as likely to be slain as the unworthy. Also, their eyes were different- they would paralyze you until you'd solved all the riddles in the world (basically, until you died of old age). The fact that Atreyu is basically found NOT worthy here takes away from the scene a bit- as do the giant stone tits.
Atreyu crossing the Sphinxes Gate is the most intense part of the movie. It's so involving and chilly, carried with strong suspense. Even the background music gives me goosebumps.
Get past THIS gate, then make it through the NEXT gate, and then you're at the Southern Oracle ... IF the first gate doesn't blow you up OR the second gate doesn't make you a coward!
I LUV THIS MOVIE!!!!!!! i also think the music is really fitting, and i also think it is the most thrilling part in the movie. thank you for posting this!!!
Lol!!! I often wonder how much they paid a little kid to look at an open book & start yelling "Be confident! Be confident! Atreyu run now!" Lol!!! I still like the movie though.
I always considered Atreyu facing the Sphinxes the most thrilling part in the film. If he dies, it's the end of the story. The music for the sequence is very fitting, very chilling.
