  • this scared me as a child!

  • Poor knight :(

  • This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. But I imagined being someone who had never seen the movie, and trying to understand this video- I burst out laughing when the kid appears reading a book and shouting BE CONFIDENT! whoever hasnt seen the movie was probably like what the f was that?!?!

  • this part is so cool! sphinxes are gnarly lol

  • How the fuck did my parents let me watch this??

  • @RhythmDroid Whadya mean? The only thing I disliked about this movie was how fake these action scenes were.

  • Curse the Sphinx's' rocking tits!

  • HAHAHAHA KEEP PRESSING 8 ME AND MY SISTER ARE LAUGHING HARD AT IT

  • @technogandhi No one caaaaares

  • @cjwright79 Ironic.. you cared enough to comment

  • big boobs!

  • I agree with you, DBZenith. Those Sphinx statues did have a some nice VISIBLE racks, even though they were supposedly on this FAMILY-ORIENTED movie. Otherwise, this entire scene scared the crap out of me as well - just like all of those other scenes with Gmork, the wolf that was supposed to hunt and kill Atreyu.

  • @malestrom1000 I object to your assertion that breasts are somehow inappropriate for a 'family movie'. What do you think little baby Jessop has been suckling for the first months of his life?

  • Those sphinx's have nice racks..

  • Nostalgia...

  • Be confident!

  • I always wondered, why the hell did they give them nipples?

  • I always enjoyed the idea from mythology of how sphinxes were keepers of riddles and mysteries. This movie really inspired a LOT of my writing over the years. This scene more than any others perhaps. Love it! :D

  • 0_o Gmork and the first gate used to scare the hell out of me! Good movie though. =) I really liked Atreyu when I was a little girl... =3 Teehee.

  • This was always my absolute favorite part, thanks for posting it!

Hmm, he doesn't really pass the test so much as outrun the laser beams, does he?

  • in the original novel the sphinx´s eyes are ALWAYS open.^^ If ye try to pass and they keep their eyes open, you freeze and have to answer ALL riddles of our world. when atreju passes through successfully he looks back he sees that the sphinxes had closed their eyes.

  • After seeing the knight get fried I think the only sane course of action would be to start scaling a cliffside to get around. No quest is worth incineration.

  • @cjwright79 Yep, after that I would do the same. Besides it's like someone mentioned earlier on, this scene is slighty altered from the book. I believe the knight is a refference to Sir Huunreck whom Bastian meets in the second half of the book, and for whom he creates the dragon Smerg (who was shown in the second film). Another difference is the fact that the Southern Oracle is represented as a bigger (blue) version of the Sphinx Gate, which was not so in the novel.

  • @Tracte2 Smerg huh. Sounds nothing like Smaug. Not at all derivative of Tolkien!

  • @cjwright79 check out: "The Neverending Story 2 - Part 3/9 [full movie] ", if you don't believe me ;)

  • @cjwright79 In the novel it´s explained that the second gate only appears when the first was passed.

But in the novel the gates are described totally different anyway.

  • @cjwright79 Well, that would make sense except he could only reach the next gate by going through this gate first. The gate would eventually lead him to the Southern Oracle who would then provide him with the answers he so desperately needed. And, of course, a warrior such as he could not back down from a challenge.

  • This scene always gets me so pumped.

I don't think any other film can top the adrenaline I feel watching this.

(and it's not because of the boobs).

  • "hab Selbstvertrauen, hab Selbstvertrauen" :) I remember myself crying while watching the scene as a child...

  • You took the words right out of my mouth, Darknessinside12!

  • It would've been hilarious if the sphinxes keeped firing at him after they missed.

  • Those things give Zeus a mighty titjob.

  • I would love that in my front yard guarding my house or masion

I love how the it just distroys anything that it comes across

  • I would love that in my front yard guarding my house or masion

  • DMN THAT SOLDIER GOT OWNED LIKE OPRAH

  • You know how moms sometimes give those little pearls of wisdom to their kids as they drop them off for school. Like "Make good choices, sweetie!" or something. No lie, my mom used to say "Be confident, Atreyu! Confidence!" Man, talk about embarrassing...XD

  • I remember HOW SCARED I was as little girl whenever I saw him near the Sphinxes..............when they opend their eyes....omg...I still am. And I am 35 now! Dear God....time has passed and I didnt notice.......wonderful times when you were a child and belived in such things......phantasy is the greatest gift. blessed the people who invent such stories...

  • 3:52 YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @bachtin10 LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Atreyu has won one part of the test! Now, can he face the Mirror Gate and learn his connection with the reader of the story?

  • Take THAT laser zapping naked ladies!

    That's hot.

  • I don´t remember this scene :/

  • One day I wished, absolutely ALL music would be released on a 2 CD soundtrack-CD. I already wrote to Klaus Doldinger`s official page, but I got no answer....

  • Atreyu was paralyzed because he was (obviously) admiring those giant stone boobs, and he just didn't want to go

in fact, now that I'm older, I think that this scene (very different from the book) looks like a sexual rite of passage for Atreyu; he overcame his fear/indifference of women when he survived the Sphinx's trap...some deep shit here for a kid's movie eh? heheheeh

  • @JoeTyler85 I think you may be right. It's even more interesting when you realize that the situation is being played out with enough actors to represent man at all stages in life - the child, the young man and the old man.

  • Would have been funny if they had just zapped him after he had jumped at 5:11

  • Oh, I remember watching this in VHS as a kid... This was one of the scariest parts of the movie.... or maybe it was the tortoise? ha!

  • Yeha Giant Boobs!

  • this part scared me half to death when i was younger

  • hey guys, guess who the villain in neverending story 3 is:

    JACK BLACK!! LOLOLOLOLOL

  • when I saw this as a kid, I had no idea what boobs were. When the sphynxs incinerated that knight, I felt that I would have nightmares for years.... This movie gave me the chills...

  • This movie does have a lot of meaning when you really think about everything they say...

  • 5:27

    RAHWRAHWRHAWWWWWWWWWRHWRGWAHRGWHRGH!

  • 4:22... AND THEY CALL THIS A KIDS MOVIE

  • @Gutted94 it is

  • 5:21 He maade it, he maade it!!

  • Majestic!

  • The book's a bit better -- there's no discernible pattern to whom the sphinxes admit, & their eyes emit riddles, not lasers.

  • I wonder if they'd let those tits into a kid's movie these days?

  • why wasn't Xaide on the first movie??

  • I would panic while watching this =P

  • I dont know why I never watched this movie when I was a kid (Im in my 20s now), but I just watched it for the first time yesterday. This was definitely the coolest scene..

  • I always thought he failed this test...the sphinx shot at him, he was just spry enough to get through without being hit.

  • i saw the claw of the sphinx jiggle a rubbery jiggle as the horseman's weapon hit it when he fell. i never noticed that before. oh my. I thought those sphinxes were made of solid rock. what a bummer~!

  • @experesso LOL that is hilarious, I never noticed that either. Good eye.

  • @experesso yea aye lol

  • They are Cherubims.

This was the best and most frightening scene in the movie.

  • I haven't seen this scene in well over 20 years... geez.

  • I remembered this movie when I was little kid, its crazy fantasy story! I love this old movie, awesome! southern oracle and sphinx gate is scary.

  • The Spinx Gate is your life's calling. If you think yourself unworthy. It will not permit you inside it's gate.

  • Best movie ever!!!!!!!!!! This part used to freak me out when I was a kid...

  • i love this movie, but the first gate always scared the piss out of me. Thanx for posting the video!

  • hmmmm sphinx boobies. me want some boobies.

  • Damn I haven't seen this since I was kid. Awesome THANKYOU :D

  • Why doesnt he just run really fast...?

  • I wonder what happened to the horse after the knight got zapped

  • @stardappledgreen the sphinx ate it i guess

  • @stardappledgreen if you look closely you can see circular horse tracks leading away from the gate, looks like the horse turned around and went back home... guess the horse didn't feel its own worth either

  • @QueekHeadtaker LOL! ... hilarious =]

  • Favorite movie scene of all time :D

  • I am now 32 years old; first saw this movie when I was 7.

To this day, this scene gives me chills.

Harry Potter can suck it; NES was the best kids fantasy movie we've ever known...

  • @Grafknar , I Agree with you, I`m 31 and the NES Music.

  • damn straight :)

  • Who was the knight in armor? I remember I saw this as a child, and had nightmares about those sphinx eyes.

  • This bit always creeped me out...and it still does!

  • the best fantasy film ever bar none

  • This movie is fucking awesome! They sure don't make kids movies like they used to.

  • Its a magic gate - it takes you somewhere else. You must pass THROUGH a magic gate to get where you want to go.

  • lol, cause dont showing kids cheating ^^

  • @IllusionDan Because then he wouldn't LEARN anything.

  • @IllusionDan the same reason the eagles couldn't fly frodo straight to mount doom, i presume.

  • @IllusionDan Because that would be cheating. :-p

  • @IllusionDan In the book, in order to see the Southern Oracle, Atreyu had to pass through the gates because without crossing one gate, he couldn't be able to see or reach the other gates, meaning he wouldn't be able to reach the Southern Oracle. He can't just fly there. It's also kind of a rite of passage thing that has to be done alone. It's to test to see if he was pure of heart and had a pure reason to see the Southern Oracle.

  • @IllusionDan Because the Sphynx would release her Sphynx-ter and blast that overgrown flying cocker spaniel in midair with a huge lightning bolt straight outta her ass!! lol

  • @IllusionDan If you tried going over or around, you would either hit an invisible barrier, or die.

  • @IllusionDan Because over the sphynx there's hoting but an empty plain, you gotta get through the gates to see what's behind them, They forgot to mention that in the movie, I think. Actually, they skipped over a lot of things, that's why the book is way better. But the movie is incredibly good too!

  • @Danifail146 so... he couldn't have had Falcor come flying through the two sphinx? and just kind throw him through it? Oh wait its a kids movie not a lolwtf movie :(

  • @IllusionDan true dat l guess he had to prove himself to pass thru the next gate or some shit...

  • @IllusionDan Because you have to pass through it to get to the next one, not over it. It's like the gateway to another dimension kind of thing. It's explained in the book.

  • @IllusionDan Then they would fire ground-to-air bolts.

  • @IllusionDan It's a legitimate question my friend. But you forget areal shots deny us those great tit shots on the sphinx.

  • @IllusionDan Atreyu needed to pass the gates in order to reach the Southern Oracla. If falcor had simply flew him over the gates, nothing would have been there.

  • @IllusionDan I asked that too when i saw this as a kid.

  • @IllusionDan a fair question, but those motherfuckers might've eye-lid-zapped the shit out of the luck dragon in mid-air.

"the sphinxes can see straight into your heart... (and you're obviously staring at their breasts.)"

  • @IllusionDan because the other gate doesn't apear until you've gone through the first one.

  • @IllusionDan that wouldn't be terribly exciting now would it?

  • @IllusionDan Fantasia is the world of human imagination after all, so maybe it's impossible to get to the Southern Oracle without going through the gates. =)

  • The film I most watched when i was a child...I totally consumed the videotape!!

  • This terrified me as a child. I was four years old and we watched this at school on a 'rainy playtime' when they showed everyone a video instead of letting us go outside. Without a doubt this was the scariest moment in this film. Wrong of the school to show it to kids so young - that's why it's a PG and not a U!

  • brings back memories. seemed so much more intense back then but still good

  • This was drastically changed from the book. In the book whether or not the sphinxes opened their eyes was COMPLETELY random- which made them much more scary, as even the worthy were just as likely to be slain as the unworthy. Also, their eyes were different- they would paralyze you until you'd solved all the riddles in the world (basically, until you died of old age). The fact that Atreyu is basically found NOT worthy here takes away from the scene a bit- as do the giant stone tits.

  • This is a representation of lucifer, as one of the cherubs that cover God's throne before he fell.

  • Yes but why are there the big boobies in the movie??Not Necesarry :-( worry about

  • the old guy's a peeping tom I bet he only looked at the statues well you know...

  • "FANCY ARMOR DOESN"T HELP. THE SPHINXES EYES CAN LOOK STRAIGHT INTO YOUR HEART." sounds like a mythological thing, doesn't it?

  • this scared me as a kid.

  • Atreyu crossing the Sphinxes Gate is the most intense part of the movie. It's so involving and chilly, carried with strong suspense. Even the background music gives me goosebumps.

  • this bit used to scare me so much.. still sends chills down my spine now!

  • i remember jacking off to this as a kidd. don't lie you did to.

  • Get past THIS gate, then make it through the NEXT gate, and then you're at the Southern Oracle ... IF the first gate doesn't blow you up OR the second gate doesn't make you a coward!

  • I LUV THIS MOVIE!!!!!!! i also think the music is really fitting, and i also think it is the most thrilling part in the movie. thank you for posting this!!!

  • I find this movie scene very creepy, even as an adult.

The southern oracle aswell, when the blue statues are crumbling. It's quite unsettling

  • this part scared the shit out of me when i was a little kid

  • Me too! Especially this and the wolf scene.

  • Why didn't he just walk around the Sphinxes?

  • Because the next gate is only going to appear, after he has passed the previous one.

  • Lol!!! I often wonder how much they paid a little kid to look at an open book & start yelling "Be confident! Be confident! Atreyu run now!" Lol!!! I still like the movie though.

  • I always considered Atreyu facing the Sphinxes the most thrilling part in the film. If he dies, it's the end of the story. The music for the sequence is very fitting, very chilling.

  • whats the song from :49-1:33 and from 2:30- 5:29

  • This movie is too awesome for words. And so are the sphynx's boobs.

  • LOL ...men

  • @puggymonster That is some monumental boobage!! Quite literally!! |:D~

  • HAAHAHAHAH IMMA CHARGIN MAH LAZOR

  • looool 5:27
