I can't believe people are taking this as a serious animation tutorial. Stop looking for asspats, smlillium. People are voting this video down for a reason, which is that this is not an animation tutorial. No animator I know has ever taken a chance to trace because it never fucking works. No... this animation "technique" is a disgrace to animators. You are stealing the hard work of others and taking credit for it. If you have any self respect or possess any real skill, you would take the time to make your own. Learn the anatomy of what you want to work with and study the movements. It will take a lot of trial and error, no question. But the end result is much more satisfying.

To the nay-sayers who immediately dislike tracing, should look into animation positions in the field. The reality is that for in-betweeners, a great deal of tracing is required (to maintain volume control). And for some people, tracing is the "hand-on" way of learning. Personally, I only dislike tracing if it is done in efforts to, in the end, steal artwork. But as a learning tool, it's absolutely fine. The problems only come in when the "tracer" publishes the work as their own.

@CuteChongAlt It really is shame that so many people forget that as children (primarily) trace images. (I, myself traced many a coloring book cover.) However, in all respects, it's something that a person grows out of. Most people fail to see is that not everyone advances at the same rate. Some people, even talented artists, stop drawing or doodling early in life (for any reason), and by the time these persons return to it, the tracing threshold has not yet been passed (Advanced ages included).

If every person was born KNOWING how to draw then EVERYONE'S art would be famous.Then we wouldn't have to practice. We would all just KNOW how to draw from the day we were born which is impossible. The saying is "practice makes perfect" and this video is a PERFECT example of that. ALL tracings are examples of that saying.
"Professional tracer"? Have you people gone mad? Tracing is wrong. Its not something that you can be a professional at! Even 5 year-olds can trace! If you want to be good at drawing, learn from books or videos, or even take art classes, because tracing is definetely not an option. Do you see people who work for Disney "trace"? Professional artists do not trace at all. This is a good way to teach animating, but the thing is, you could've just used a simple line turning, instead of tracing. :/
@gabrielajocson If professional artists don't trace, then, can you explain me what are "clean up" artist for? what you see on t.v. and anime or animations it's the product of tons and tons of re-drawing, giving form, tracing and cleaning what doesn't belong, you you can see those pretty drawings on your favorite shows and animations. So, to certain point, you can "indeed" be a professional tracer but you also need theory and knowledge of human anatomy, as well as theory of movement.
@kratoserick In conclusion, what you see on television is not the product of one so called "God" artist who never flaws, but the product of many people that make one single drawing better, and tracing, in conbination with some kind of formal study of animation, is a good way to start learning about the timing and spacing that it's commonly used in all of your favorite shows. @stenseng Sadly lots of companies epically anime studios reuse drawings over and over. It saves them time and effort, of course If you do not own what you are tracing over that is illegal, this is why if you are going to be a animator you should take life drawing courses to get the human structure correct or make your own Mo-Cap's simply with a camera or webcam.
I got the GIF i wanted and put it in GIMP 2 to edit. But all of the images are 'combined' and i can only see the first image. How do I edit the others?
Also, When i draw on the first picture it only shows up in the layers tab.
Why does everyone have this problem with you eye-balling i have done that on paper with a sakura piccie on my dvd. I have no problem with it. ^^ don't loose confident.

Cleaning the frames seems to take forever. Wouldn't it be easier if you increase the brightness of one frame and then trace over it? Then when you clean it, it wouldn't take as long because the screen is mostly white.
Two ways I find cleaning frames easier (at least when I'm coloring over) is by:
A.) Taking the easy/lazy way out and cutting out what I don't need in Adobe
or
B. Going into MS Paint and converting the image to a 1y color .bmp, cut/paste the .bmp into a new file, then continuing to color over the image, outline, etc.

What do you mean "get over it" in the first place it was at least 8 months since I wrote. took you quite a long time to figure out what to write back, I see. the only thing that makes "drama" is you. and when you say "leave this video alone, "well ... @stenseng Sadly lots of companies epically anime studios reuse drawings over and over. It saves them time and effort, of course If you do not own what you are tracing over that is illegal, this is why if you are going to be a animator you should take life drawing courses to get the human structure correct or make your own Mo-Cap's simply with a camera or webcam.

Hey.
I got the GIF i wanted and put it in GIMP 2 to edit. But all of the images are 'combined' and i can only see the first image. How do I edit the others?
Also, When i draw on the first picture it only shows up in the layers tab.

Cleaning the frames seems to take forever. Wouldn't it be easier if you increase the brightness of one frame and then trace over it? Then when you clean it, it wouldn't take as long because the screen is mostly white.

Two ways I find cleaning frames easier (at least when I'm coloring over) is by:
A.) Taking the easy/lazy way out and cutting out what I don't need in Adobe
or
B. Going into MS Paint and converting the image to a 1y color .bmp, cut/paste the .bmp into a new file, then continuing to color over the image, outline, etc.
