This reminds me of my Goliath Bird-Eating Tarantula. Known for being very aggressive, but mine is one of the calmest tarantulas I've ever held--if not THE calmest. He likes to sit on my head like a hat. It's totally cute~
lol all you people that are gonna go out and buy one of these OBTs are all gonna get bitten. from what ive seen this isnt a common occurance (handling obts) i would say this obt is unusually docile, but hey, if u wanna spend a few days on your asses then by all means try and handle one.
i hate when im on Arachnoboards or some shit and people are always sayin dont hold this/dont handle this!! if im gonna spend $100 on my Lparahybana & Ageniculata i am gonna hold them!
I'd really like to get a T but i have no idea on a good starter. I want one large enough to try and handle, yet small enough to not need mice. I have a scorpion and a robo hamster. I love them both lol. I don't want to feed the little ham to the scary scorp but I'm not against other people doing it.
@njnolan1 A good starter T is the Brazilian Black, they tend to be the most docile species, though there are always exceptions. As for mice, they're not really recommended for T's anyway, though obviously there's alot of vids on here showing T's being fed mice, but in reality you risk harming the T if you do. Only the huge Goliaths can be safely fed mice, and i'm not sure if even they really need them. If they do it would only be once a year, the rest of the time roaches would be fine.
@ReclusiveDuck Hey, thanks. My scorp died during his molt :(. I ended up getting a G. rosea. I know they can be moody at times but it was either that or a pink toe. The G. rosea is hardier so I figured that would be a good start. I learned a lot recently about T's. I still want and OBT but I'll wait a little while because they have a higher venom potency (not as high as the P. metallica) but with the few exceptions it seems they are known (obt) to be more temperamental.
@ReclusiveDuck The G. pulchra would be awesome. I love the jet black color. My next two on my wish list though are the B. smithi (also very docile mostly) and the T. blondi. I like critters with low humidity levels. I know the T. blondi needs higher levels and that's why I'm going to wait for that one. I have read that about the mice not being that nutritious anyway. Thanks for the help!
@ReclusiveDuck The only problem besides not being able to afford them right now is where to get them. I have found places online but I don't know who to trust and I really don't want to spend 45 bucks just for shipping. Thanks again!
@njnolan1 Sorry to hear about your scorp, we've lost a couple of ours recently too :( We have a B Smithi and she's actually quite stroppy lol Very pretty though, only problem is they're expensive as i'm sure you already know. Good luck trying to find a genuine T.Blondi, we had to settle for T.stirmi, still huge and utterly fearless! I'm guessing your in the US but here in Britain we found our OBT in a local pet shop, they're very hardy T's so they're probably readily available in >>>>
I had an idea they were expensive because demand sky rocketed. The availability of T's can differ greatly depending which country you're in. I will look up the stirmi too thanks!
@njnolan1 I'm guessing you're in the US, but you normally have a better selection than us, our OBT (about 2in legspan) cost the equivilent of $5, i'd be surprised if the US is much different. Unfortunately a Goliath species willalways be expensive, ours is a sub-adult and cost well over $100, and that was cheap compared to alot of places! Oh, and the food bill will go up too lol! In my experience Goliaths just eat, shit, and generally get pissed off very easily.
@ReclusiveDuck Haha! Nice. That's what I like best about them haha. I looked up the T. stirmi and I can't see much of a difference between the two. I could easily be lied to about which is which. I have a pet shop that special orders but I don't have the money right now. I would order online but shipping is usually upwards of 40-50 US dollars for overnight live shipping which is mandatory. end up spending 150 bucks. I'm sure the pet shop will add their shipping cost to my final price.
@njnolan1 eeek, that's alot to pay for shipping. In the U.S. you could try KenTheBugGuy or Robc (his YouTube channel is TarantulaGuy1976) they might be able to do it cheaper, both are highly reputable. If money is still a problem then get a L.Parabyhana, almost as big and very easy to keep.......Still, think you should go for an OBT, go on you know you want to lol
@ReclusiveDuck I'll look into those guys. I definitely want an obt but I also want those other two as well :P. I'll just keep my eyes open and learn as much. Thanks!
I can't wait to get mine next week, although I won't be as brave as you! Good handling technique there. Keeping your hands underneath them won't alarm them. Finally good to see someone on here treating a T with the respect it deserves for a change. I'll take a look through your other videos :o) .
Gorgeous T,i just picked up my first obt about an hour ago.my first old world T as well.I would love to handle this lil sling I've got but I think ill just watch your video when I get the urge haha..keep posting!
Great spider, and I respect the fact yours is good with handling but i think you should say in the commentsthat you are nonetheless choosing to do it at your own risk. They can spring from their housing, and even a bite from a juvie can produce bad pain/swelling for some time after, even if the initial bite wasn't so bad. Most tarantulas are ok if gently corralled and allowed to just walk over your hands but doesnt mean they are ok in other situations and wouldnt want people to be complacent.
This is so cool, my murinus will not be staring in such a video, I was rehoming him today and bam he was out and bolted. I had the deli cup ready so I was able to cup him up and return him to saftey lol.
My son and I are really enjoying your videos. Hes 7 and we got him his first spider last year. Its a Brazilian Black and she is full of pure awesomness. He loves it. First thing he has taken too. Spiders his first love. He likes your collection and the different colors they have.
Amazing, if my friends OBT gets out of his enclosure its race day and fight stances until you get her back in. Its amazing how T's can have their own individual demeanour.
i mean its no reason for you to get pissy about i was simply asking because i don't know to much of nothing about spiders period but yea seems like someone isn't having the best day try not to lash out at anyone else its really bad for your health
@piggy237 Ive seen an over grown one, with an impressive 8 inch legspan!! This friend of mine kept it for 15 years. When my friend first bought this tarantula 15 years ago, it was about the size of a large dog tick, and look at her now. She's a gorgeous giant!! My friend named her FIREBALL since, she resembles a flaming ball of fire when she's not in the best of moods XD LMFAO!!
You are not one of the smartest this is a orange star tarantula aka Pterinochulinus murinus and you should NEVER handle it they are verry fast and agressive tarantulas cant be predicted ;) and if it bites you... Well lets say you wouldnt be that brave any more.
I've handled a lot of tarantulas taking care of them in the pet trade but never a Baboon....most jumped constantly at the tank lid in attack and one was so stressed it died doing that....of course, they were wild caught. Do you find this common behavior?
@doommic base on national geographic channel, they said tarantula's are not aggressive on humans. there is no single record that a person dies with tarantula's bite... "well they don't bite humans"
realy nice :D and realy beautiful spider u got there :) like to see some females owning spiders :D and just some females with no fear of this lovely animals :D
Lovely T, and dont u have a goliath also? Lmao, u have far bigger balls than what i would ever have :D. I have 2 T`s myself and they`re chillies, a rose and a red oth of them arent exactly nasty but if i try and get them out they rear up at me, What do u think im doing wrong. Please help me much appreciated. And really good bideo thanks for sharing that :)
urs is rly fat 0_o :D and many ppl have handled this spicies every1 can you just have to have rly big balls to do it xD and uv gotta be careful that's all
holy fuck that tarantula is deffinately on drugs my golden starburst has bit my brother twice. i am now to scared to hold her. mine is allllllloooooottttttt f
they do have a reputation.. but a few specimens can be quite calm... but i would never handle one, i've seen very defensive specimens.. and a bite is not pretty
I'm glad I found this video. I always get a bit scared when I have to clean out my orange baboon's, Fogu's, tank. He's only slightly aggressive. And he's usually calm when I have to take him out...but I can't help being nervous Your video will be a nice shot of confidence for next time! Thanks!!
Doesn't seem to be. I can move things around in the aquarium and she doesn't move. I haven't tried handling yet. My rose hair I bought a few weeks ago is real skiddish though.
Lolz Pardon me But im staring at the right angle here 2:38 theres a bigger picture than the spider. Hahahaha anyway i think girls holding the spider is a hot chick ^^
i think these are one of the most beautiful species, but i talked to the lady at the pet store and she told me any chance it gets to bit you it will take :( then i said mexican red knee? she said no they are agressive too and to get a rose hair .. :(
pet store lady is right about OBTs (well, sorta) and dead wrong about Mexican Red Knees. My B. smithi is docile as can be, it kicks some hairs on occasion but thats just a mild itch. go for the red knee imo.
I saw one of these in a reptile store, it scared the shit outta me! The owner mentioned handling these guys is really risky because of their agressive nature
this is pure respect for her Ts, not maupulation of cooing down, if it was it would be shuggush and not as active as it is..pure respect, and gentle handling speaks volumes!
most likely the temperature is lower then the Usumbara is comfortable at so it is sluggish... All spiders are exothermic and thus get slower when chilled. I would NOT recommend anyone trying to reproduce this stunt as those things are very fast and aggressive. And as for their being no need to fear tarantula's... at least have a healthy respect if nothing else!!!
i could agree with you but i also have my own theory, ive found with my friends OBT that its an all out dick in its enclosure but as soon as we get her out shes just like a little rosie, so it leads me to think that they are more teritory defensive than anything else
Incorrect. We've never chilled our Ts or expose them to lower temps than required. Each video was shot within 5 mins of being lifted from viv at approx 80f .
We dont use any form of tarantula manipulation and do NOT handle often. Its our responsibility and the Spiders choice. If it wants to bite us, it will !
We dont love our t's in the same way as you may a dog or cat but we treat them well and feel thats clear to see.
More footage will be shot at the next anual viv maintenance, coming soon.
Valium??? hahahah but you have guts for handling them.... My OBT's are really really fast... though I have never been bitten by an adult I have been by a 1.5cm sling... really stinging venom which lasted for half an hour... no more handling OBTs for me...
Low temperature? Do you even know what you are talking about? Obviously not, the OBT in the video has not been submitted to cold before handling. OBT, or any other sp. for that matter, tend to be a lot more calm once they are removed from their enclosure. And by the way - all tarantulas - regardless of sp. - have their own personality, quirks and temperament.
if that thing decides to book it, theres nothing u can do to stop it.. thats the main reason id never have one of those as a pet.. very cool and interesting species tho
These spiders are beautiful, but I believe this species has got some potent venom . . .

I never said they're ALL female, I said that this one is. If you had bothered to glance at the description, that would be obvious :|

what a beautiful tarantula. have you had her since she was a spiderling?
anthonyventrello 2 years ago
so tiny and fuzzy looking! so cute xD
xXMikuGirlXx 2 years ago
She's an adorable creature :)
zolo1243 2 years ago
Either you've been smoking pot too close to her, or you've had her since spiderling years.
I think it's the former.
TheEllicec61 2 years ago
Is your spider unusually well behaved, or have you just learned it's secret?
drbroccoli 2 years ago
I think the secret of all spiders is, if you don't threaten them, they won't attack you for sure. :D
Eclipse6491 2 years ago
But these spiders are quite finicky in terms of what they consider a threat.

i think these are one of the most beautiful species, but i talked to the lady at the pet store and she told me any chance it gets to bit you it will take :( then i said mexican red knee? she said no they are agressive too and to get a rose hair .. :(
AllieKat816 2 years ago
Mexican red knees are not agressive.
Get it if you can find it, or another of the Brachypelma species
nikandraathelvete 2 years ago 2
pet store lady is right about OBTs (well, sorta) and dead wrong about Mexican Red Knees. My B. smithi is docile as can be, it kicks some hairs on occasion but thats just a mild itch. go for the red knee imo.
skilletsteve 2 years ago
thanks ill keep that in mind
AllieKat816 2 years ago
lmao she was pretty far from correct
Mikenike22579 2 years ago
rose hairs are more agressive then a red knee

I saw one of these in a reptile store, it scared the shit outta me! The owner mentioned handling these guys is really risky because of their agressive nature

Lovely OBT! Great video. Nice music too!
harimaugoblok 2 years ago
this is pure respect for her Ts, not maupulation of cooing down, if it was it would be shuggush and not as active as it is..pure respect, and gentle handling speaks volumes!
whereangelsplay1 2 years ago
nice lil fella, i wouldnt have guts to handle one of them ones,
whats the tune on video? is it faith no more?
flarty 2 years ago
most likely the temperature is lower then the Usumbara is comfortable at so it is sluggish... All spiders are exothermic and thus get slower when chilled. I would NOT recommend anyone trying to reproduce this stunt as those things are very fast and aggressive. And as for their being no need to fear tarantula's... at least have a healthy respect if nothing else!!!
shonuffisthemaster 2 years ago 3
i could agree with you but i also have my own theory, ive found with my friends OBT that its an all out dick in its enclosure but as soon as we get her out shes just like a little rosie, so it leads me to think that they are more teritory defensive than anything else
xoskyeox 2 years ago 3
this is true of most inverts and reptiles.
harimaugoblok 2 years ago
More footage will be shot at the next anual viv maintenance, coming soon.
piggy237 2 years ago
Valium??? hahahah but you have guts for handling them.... My OBT's are really really fast... though I have never been bitten by an adult I have been by a 1.5cm sling... really stinging venom which lasted for half an hour... no more handling OBTs for me...
darrenchow 2 years ago
Low temperature? Do you even know what you are talking about? Obviously not, the OBT in the video has not been submitted to cold before handling. OBT, or any other sp. for that matter, tend to be a lot more calm once they are removed from their enclosure. And by the way - all tarantulas - regardless of sp. - have their own personality, quirks and temperament.

is she on premolt?? why is she so sluggish?
