I recently talked to Buddy´s former bass player from the late 70s, Tom Warrington. He told me that working for Buddy was like playing major league sports for a very demanding coach. He credited Buddy with teaching him how to become a truly professional musician.
@britcomic Well, he should have. Buddy's band was much tighter than Duke's.
Here's something Buddy would never tolerate - check the video on YT titled Ellington - Perdido.
You will see, in the first tenor chair, Paul Gonsalves, fast asleep.
Buddy would never tolerate being embarassed by that kind of crap. Pro musicians do NOT sleep or fuck off on the bandstand - period. If you do, pack your bags and fuck you, and go look for another gig ~
@MarkR1957 Imagine Ellington telling Gonsalves to pack his bags! I know that concert well and it is certainly shocking to see Gonsalves (who, like so many jazz musicians of the era, had a bad drug habit) comatose on the stand. Duke's method of punishment was to make PG play endless, hard solos - so PG's punishment was the audience's delight. Rich was undoubtedly a drummer of genius but on the evidence of this recording, a horrible human being, in contrast to Duke, who was beautiful in every way.
I watched Buddy fire one of his horn players when they played at Disneyland, back in or around 1983. He got up in the middle of a song, went over to the young horn player, put his hand on his shoulder and said "get up and get off my stage, you're fired. Will never forget that day.
@tornmask It is the Gods honest truth. I still can't believe that I witnessed that. I am a musician, well then, I was a shocked musician, and went home telling myself ,"maybe I should do something else with my life". Buddy in my opinion, was the VERY best drummer that this planet will ever see, but if he ever needed a part time job in his life, he could have been a poster boy for Prozac! He was the best at both!
@MarkR1957 It seems that Buddy didn't think any of the 'Talented' people in his band had the talent either, I play classical, jazz, rock and folk quitar to a very high standard, i also practice Pencat Silat, an indonisian martial art at competion level and have done so for the last 21 years, so takeing on that arrogant little fuck wouldn't have been a problem. Just by my mentioning that i practice Pencat Silat would have been enough for him to shut his filthy mouth and back down. You talk crap.
@Lamvesp You don't practice any Martial Arts. One of the first things we are taught is that we use our skills for sport or to defend ourselves or others from harm. We do NOT use martial arts to "knock someone's teeth out" becuase they say something that we don't like. Any true Martial Artist knows, and follows, that code. If someone insults you, you walk away. You don't hammer them becuase they called you a name.
True Martial Artists know this, and since you don't, well . . . . . . .
@MarkR1957 I practice Pencat Silat, it's an attack and defence martial art with it's roots in war not sport. What's with the 'we' you doughnut? You know fuck all about anything to do with martial arts, so why lie like that. I'll tell you gain, if anyone verbally abused me the way Buddy Rich verbally abused his band members i would have punched his teeth down his throat martial art or not. Now stop acting the spak and go get your diaper changed. "One of the first things 'we' are taught" FFS! haha
I've said it before and I will say it again...Buddy was a Jazz/big band player and was playing with the best musicians on planet Earth at the time. May have been an asshole, but that's just how people were at that time; they had thick skin, this was the only way to get through to musicians who thought their shit didn't stink! I gaurantee the next show was amazing! Being a pro musicians back then was most certainly a privaledge, not a flash in the pan like it is for some 'musicians' these days.
@bramstokerful -Oh yeah, tough love...don't like it?! Go play at a fucking Holiday Inn or the rat hole bar on the edge of town for drunks who didn't care! He made players better with his brand of expertise and professional yet aggressive mentoring. Think Justin Bieber...there you go; that kid would be back on his family farm shucking corn in three shows [or less!] back then!
Buddy Rich has a potty-mouth!! Ha HA HA....ain't that some motherfuckin shit! Fuckin pottymouth sonofabitch! I'm the stoned dude in the back laughin' my ass off while Buddy zeroes in on the fat fucker in the front, who can't stop wiping his sweaty forehead with his hanky.....
"sunberst1" Said it exactly..and I don't expect everyone to understand how Buddy was when in performance mode or how passionate and expert his playing was. Of course he sounded pissed. Watch the band play when they're "on". Watch him play and lead them. He is absorbed and so too is his band. His intensity carries over off the stage. I feel sorry for the guys that had to take it. Everyone knew what he was like to work for and they chose to be in his band. Let's remove this and stop the attacks.
It sounds like a cross between Al Pacino famous speech in "Scent of a Woman" and Pacino as Tony Montana in "Scarface". I was just waiting for him to whip out some huge ass drum sticks and go "Say Hello to my little F'n Friends"
I Guess Buddy never hear of the coaching technics of John Wooden :-) He was able to motivate anyone with a velvet glove. To bad the guys had to go thru that abuse.
I Guess Buddy never hear of the coaching technics of John Wooden :-) He was able to motivate anyone with a velvet glove. To bad the guys had to go thru that abuse.
I Guess Buddy never hear of the coaching technics of John Wooden :-) He was able to motivate anyone with a velvet glove. To bad the guys had to go thru that abuse.
Buddy was a perfectionist and dedicated to making every performance his personal best, and he expected total focus from his band. It was my understanding that this was after a performance where the band was the worst of any amateur band you can imagine. They embarrassed Buddy Rich, I don't blame him; they deserved getting chewed out.
@Bogart92691 No, it's pretty well known that Buddy was always like that. He was so ascerbic and difficult to play with that other elite musicians rarely played with him. That's why he had to recruit (talented) relatively unknown musicians, whom he regularly lambasted.
Oh my god, this tirade is amazing. I wasn't there so I can't really pick sides, but it's so goddamn hilarious to hear Buddy use all of this slang and all of those similes to describe his band. If you were to animate this you could take it in a dozen directions because of the freedom the language in this rant gives you. Favorited.
Wow, strange how some of the general public think buddy could do NO wrong at all, NONE! Even his psychotic behavior, rooted in anger, makes perfect sense to them.
Makes one wonder if some of the torch-wielding defenders might actually be enamored... ya know, "sweet on" the old guy. Maybe so, maybe not... if they are, love is love right?
@NintendoSwii Jesus has nothing to do with this behavior. Treating the people who work for you like that is wrong, plain and simple. God given talent does not qualify boorish stupidity.
@shaggychef If I found out the head chef treated his staff that way, I'd never eat in that restaurant again, plus get everyone I know to stay away. Many great chefs have motivated their kitchens to perfection without chewing them out. Which means its doable. Getting out of control angry makes them more nervous, and some perform worse leading to impulse firing without concern about how that chef will cover his bills, pay his mortgage, or take care of his family. Weak arrogance, and conceit.
sometimes to be the best you gotta be hard. people need to quit being little pussies and man up and have them told whats real, it's the only way you will ever learn to get better. good example, the marines. they have to be hard for them to be the best.
You know what's funny, is that I don't recall him ever having a band quit on him. He could talk like tis to his band and they hung in there, until he fired them or they finished the dates. I could be wrong about the quitting thing though.
At the end of the day he's a drummer, thats it, who the fuck else does he think he is?, you can learn to be a proffessional musician without the band leader being a fucking asshole, they should have all beat the shit out of him and then quit.
@leedrennan yes you're probably correct , but since i indicated that i was aware of my mistake and therefore i do know how the word is spelled correctly then i guess that makes the only asshole here, to be you. Have a nice day moron.
@leedrennan and also dickhead, a "typo" is not an indication of a persons spelling ability, you would know this if you stepped back from being a jerkoff for a while and observed humans for a time, they don't like trolling assholes either, asshole.
@HardRockDrummer666 "Obviously you don't understand" listen moron i do fucking understand, i just dont see how someone can run down people who work for him and think he can get away with it because of his job, go fuck yourself hard cock dummer. "That would be like BRUCE LEE's students beating him up and quitting!" bruce lee wasn't a asshole like this "drummer" . "To put things in perspective " how about you not thinking everyone is as stupid as you dumbass.
@HardRockDrummer666, go fuck yourself, ill not banter with a witless dumbass!. I dont care who the fuck you are, no one deserves having some asshole talk to them like that, if he can't express his disappointment without resorting all sorts of childish names , then he needs anger management therapy, i dont give a fuck how well he plays the fucking drum kit. He's needs to show the respect he thinks he deserves. As for you, you are obviously a simple minded buffoon,Mr hard cock strummer 666 lol.
@HardRockDrummer666 "too ignorant to understand the simple fact that Buddy was the star of the band" oh i understand that angry boy, i just dont see that it gives him the right to run people down in such a way, you would'nt accept your boss talking to you this way, then again you are a moron so maybe YOU would, but mot people would'nt. I like your take on logic though, "it's out there man", maybe have a lie down and get back to me when you are in control of your emotions hehe.
@HardRockDrummer666 "Eat shit and die, you punk ass fuck!" now i see why you agree with running people down , your an angry little man, i dont care who the fuck someone is, no boss should talk to his employees this way, you might accept being the subservient bitch that lets people run him down but most others would'nt take that from anyone. Maybe you should get back to me when you have control of your emotions, my angry little friend, ciao bella.
@HardRockDrummer666 "You started the name calling, punk" sure i did but you started insulting me first saying "i dont understand" this simple dilema haha, all because i dont believe people should be talked to this way, thats as complex as it get's."you simple minded imbesel!! " oh and dont call people " imbesel" when you cant even spell it.
@MarkR1957 Gee, you sound a lot like your idol does in this video. If the strength of Buddy's position was so self-evident and you also were so correct, you wouldn't need to resort to baseless personal attacks.
@HardRockDrummer666 I dont care if anyone else agrees with you or not, its simple (you should get it) I DONT THINK PEOPLE SHOULD BE TALKED TO THIS WAY, BY ANYONE, SIMPLE. Now on the ass chewing theme, im touching my toes at the moment, why dont you get on all fours and make a meal of my asshole dearie!.

This is very funny but I am torn by this:
Rich had the skills to demand the best from his sidemen, but going all "Jersey" on them like this is still a reflection of him as a man.

@theringoone : WOOH!..Buddy was no joke..he took his MUSIC seriously! =oO
tornmask 1 year ago

Lamvesp 1 year ago
@Lamvesp You don't practice any Martial Arts. One of the first things we are taught is that we use our skills for sport or to defend ourselves or others from harm. We do NOT use martial arts to "knock someone's teeth out" becuase they say something that we don't like. Any true Martial Artist knows, and follows, that code. If someone insults you, you walk away. You don't hammer them becuase they called you a name.
True Martial Artists know this, and since you don't, well . . . . . . .
MarkR1957 1 year ago

Bogart92691 1 year ago
@Bogart92691 No, it's pretty well known that Buddy was always like that. He was so ascerbic and difficult to play with that other elite musicians rarely played with him. That's why he had to recruit (talented) relatively unknown musicians, whom he regularly lambasted.

Oh my god, this tirade is amazing. I wasn't there so I can't really pick sides, but it's so goddamn hilarious to hear Buddy use all of this slang and all of those similes to describe his band. If you don't wanna get chewed like this then don't ever screw up with a player of Rich's caliber OR work in a Michelin star chef's kitchen...
shaggychef 1 year ago
@shaggychef If I found out the head chef treated his staff that way, I'd never eat in that restaurant again, plus get everyone I know to stay away. Many great chefs have motivated their kitchens to perfection without chewing them out. Which means its doable. Getting out of control angry makes them more nervous, and some perform worse leading to impulse firing without concern about how that chef will cover his bills, pay his mortgage, or take care of his family. Weak arrogance, and conceit.

spirit7462 1 year ago
sometimes to be the best you gotta be hard. people need to quit being little pussies and man up and have them told whats real, it's the only way you will ever learn to get better. good example, the marines. they have to be hard for them to be the best.
mickeythebutcher 1 year ago
You know what's funny, is that I don't recall him ever having a band quit on him. He could talk like tis to his band and they hung in there, until he fired them or they finished the dates. I could be wrong about the quitting thing though.

Dont you hate the irony of spelling "professional" incorrectly.
guitdude09 1 year ago
@guitdude09 - Not sure that's irony. Now, had he misspelled something like.. "intelligence." Then that would be irony.
tisdue 1 year ago
@tisdue yes, if i spelled professional incorrectly i think the fact that it makes me look "not very professional" is the irony.
guitdude09 1 year ago
At the end of the day he's a drummer, thats it, who the fuck else does he think he is?, you can learn to be a proffessional musician without the band leader being a fucking asshole, they should have all beat the shit out of him and then quit.

@guitdude09 I'm guessing that any asshole who can't SPELL "professional" has no fucking idea what it takes to BE one... just a guess
