  • @kulol808

Buddy rich was an alcoholic wife beater. You're a fucking idiot.

  • That's a lot of shit-talking for a drummer.

  • @michaeldanestone lol "when it comes time to play, whaddya play, CLAMS?!"

  • @michaeldanestone A drummer??? Ha ha. he was much more than just a "drummer." He was a bandleader, composer and remains the greatest Jazz drummer that ever lived. His perfectionism was why he bands were always so great. You have to kick ass once in a while to get the job done.

  • Don't forget the time Buddy unscrewed a cymbal, while playing, without missing a beat, and nailed the saxophone soloist in the head.

  • You know what? A lot of these guys in his band say in retrospect that Buddy was right. They were a bunch of kids out of music school that didn't take their gig that seriously.

  • you wanna play with the best you gotta put in work like they do

  • CLAMS!!!

This is very funny but I am torn by this:

Rich had the skills to demand the best from his sidemen, but going all "Jersey" on them like this is still a reflection of him as a man.

If this had been a one-time blowup, ok, but evidently there were quite a few....

The one who can solve problems and retain his civility still wins in my book.

  • BUDDY RICH WAS THE GREATEST! THE BEST DRUMMER THERE EVER WAS AND EVER WILL BE! A UNITED STATES MARINE! A HUSBAND AND A FATHER! A TRUE BLUE AMERICAN! AND ONE OF THE LAST OF THE REAL MEN ON THIS EARTH!!!

  • Yeah a little harsh maybe? BUT ! Imagine having a resume stating played in the Buddy Rich Big Band ! So the rest of you ASS HOLE ! MF's who don't like it can all go back to your worthless MF Day Jobs at Wall Mart and Wall greens and let the rest of hard workin road musicians get back to our life's work. Remember what Buddy always said 'If ya can't Swing U ain't Shit ! " LMAO ED MAN ( Rock & Jazz Percussionist Extraordinaire)

  • I heard he never kept a bassist for a solid 3 months.

    Really goes to show.

  • @DeeJayJive Then you heard wrong ~

  • We don't play two fuckin' bars in one fuckin' tempo!!!

  • maybe it's a better idea to suspend or withhold judgement until we/you know what the band did or didn't do

  • this reminds me of angry grandpa

  • 46 people are ex-employees of Buddy Rich.

  • "You're taking up to much f'king time blowing what???....sh1t!!!".....classic.

  • @indencity

    Ha fuckin legend,man!

  • Did those words even exist before the 80's?!?

  • @StanandLogan yeah duh

  • i <3 BR

  • Haha.....classic Buddy...bless his cranky perfectionist heart.

I'm sure 3/4ths of the band is thinking, "Gee I wonder if Maynard Ferguson is hiring?"

  • anyone who spends a lot of time writing music can surely understand where he's coming from

  • Great musicians are great because they are demanding. Not always in a polite way. I don't like how he bashes his musicians. But I can understand him. He overreacted, but he was basically right.

  • This is hilarious!!!

  • And he could read and write big band charts. I saw Buddy twice and he is/was the greatest. But he was an asshole!

  • To the guy who said I did not know anything about big bands. My uncle played drums for woody Herman, Richard groove Holmes and every big band musician in L.A.!

  • @meadowz06 my uncle is a train spotter doesnt mean i know anything about trains

  • Motherfucker talk like that to me he'd better kill my ass because I'd shoot a motherfucker...

  • The guy is obviously a great musician. He would'nt have been so upset, had they played well.

  • Buddy was bald, wore a rug, and drank hard booze on the bus.. Nuf said. He was angry!

  • theres nothing wrong with having high standards for your band. Better that then having no standards at all. He just wants to put on the best show and play the best music he can. When you have a reputation like his youre allowed to get picky and angry.

  • I'm Buddy Rich when I fly off the handle!

  • Sounds like Ringo yellin at the Beatles.

  • Sounds like a coach in the locker room at half time.

  • Those were the days when people took pride in what the did. Long Live Buddy!

  • "Now get out of my fuckin' bus" best part lmao

  • @bwbk007 They were probably going down the highway at 65 when he said it!

  • It's called standards.

  • He was an amazing drummer and everybody knows that, but maybe he should have spent more time on his motivational skills. That kind of disrespect wouldn't put any musician in the mood for performing. I would have walked off that bus in the first 10 seconds of that meltdown.

  • bd36576, Let's see, world's greatest drummer, black belt in karate, had the balls to punch Sinatra in the mouth and they were friends, I'd join that loser club.

  • The best expect the best.

  • What loser ego maniac. Sure he was a great drummer, but he was a loser. F&ck him.

  • @bd36576 You're the loser... Now have a clam & get outta the f@#kin bus!!!

  • @hippydippy I'm in love with you.

  • These tapes make me like Buddy even more.

  • The guy who gets fired for wearing a beard is Dave Panichi, who went on to success as a composer/session musician. Actually, I think Buddy hired him back later

  • Wow.and I thought my boss was tough !!!! LOL

  • lol, how was this even recorded?

  • @thompson8305

OK. I will. Your anger is scaring me like a scared little rat.

    I'm leaving now...

  • Travis Barker would never do this to his band.

    What's up with this dude?

    Sounds like a psycho...

  • @JoeJacari dude you keep comparing Barker to him. stop. barker don't have the balls to do this and buddy rich didn't take shit. take your stupid fucking ass to the blink 182 channels and stop trolling. barker don't have shit on buddy rich.

  • @JoeJacari even ludwig said he was hard-to-please.

  • Dam I miss him! He taught me a lot and was the best, but if you fucked up, this is what you got! Thats why he had the Best Big Band in the 60's and early 70's's when the LaBarbera's were with him! John writing and Pat on Tenor sax.

They cut out the beginning of this tape when a guy in the band who Fucked up was yelling back at Buddy. I remember sitting in Buddy's Hotel room with my dad and looking up at the wall he had a poster of Hendrix at Woodstock inscribed, "TO MY MAIN MAN BUDDY, FROM JIMI"

  • Talk about an egotistical maniac???? But he was the best!

  • i would be looking for another job......after i beat the shit our of him!!

  • FUCK YOU, YOU FUCKIN FUCKS! YOU MOTHERFUCKERS! R.I.P. BUDDY!

  • The band that night consisted of Justin Bieber & Lady Ga Ga!

  • @HandofDoom01 why in the hell would you bring them into this? what do they have to do with anything? tell you what, if you really want "thumbs up" for some stupid goddamn reason, then think of an original comment.

    i mean jesus christ.

  • @zaengo...Mad?

  • @zaengo I'm w/you, I am so sick of Bieber/Gaga comments

  • @HandofDoom01 Ol Blue Eyes almost had Buddy wacked. He had a temper problem and a pot addiction - you know it all jazz guys know jack.

  • To everyone who says that they'd tell Buddy otherwise, you're all lying.

If you were in the position like the band was, you'd be shitting your pants if he was ranting at you like that.

  • He DOES look like he's had his nose broken before...keep this in mind.

  • haha, wow, Imagine trying not to laugh when he's ready to rip your dick off!!!

    I'd be cracking up...what a worthless Cokehead.

    CLAMS?!?!?!?

TRY ME, you got some fuckin' nerve!!! ...fuck all of you

you're not doing me any favours you're breakin my heart out there....how dare you...assholes...WAAH-HAH, I'd be like

"you better just settle down old man, or you're gonna have a heart attack!"

so what If you're the best drummer, you're still the biggest psycho ever, things even out in my eyes

  • Whoah, settle down beavis!

  • Also, I believe this is his way of getting everyone to focus and do their best. At one point he says, "You're breakin' my heart." I heard an interview with one of his peers and he said Buddy couldn't stand to see a great musician playing below his level...so this is one way to get your ass in line. Carry on

  • Buddy Rich's talent was so immense that if you didn't play to your fullest potential you deserved to get cussed out. I mean he gives you a chance to play in HIS BAND and you go and fuck up left and right...what do you think he's gonna do? I mean if he sucked and did this then fuck him, but, he is still unmatched today. Go ahead and bring up the metal guys and the Weckl's and Beauford's and all that...this man is, was, and always will be the MAN. Fuck all o' you!! Ha,ha!! Gotta love it!!

  • "....and you come in and play this kind of shit for me? FUCK ALL OF YOU!!!!"

    HAHAHAHAHAHA

  • Wow!!! That's how you run it Buddy!!! LOL "What do you play, the fuckin clam??" LMAO

  • blowin what? SHIT!

  • @MrGB4ever and you would be out a job lol. I think when you have a name like Buddy Rich you can do that. He played to pay the bills and musicians didn't make the same they do now. I wouldn't want my band to sound bad with my name on it.

  • I think I might try this 'after show' pep talk with my bands.. be warned... contains some rather 'colourful' language.... Buddy Rich... legend!

  • Someone always has to be the dictator of a band. Hence the word dick. All he wanted was the music played to perfection, it was HIS name on the marquee.

  • Buddy Rich, drummer and part time Drill Sargent. :)

  • @strangersound What fucking band do you think your are playing on motherfuckers?! You wanna fuck with me on the bandstand?! Shut that fucking door! I'm up there working my balls off trying to do somebody a favor and you motherfuckers are sucking all over this joint!!

    lmao

  • thats right! u tell them buddy

  • i once had a teacher like this. get one spelling wrong and it was motherfucker this and motherfucker that. life was tough in a 1970s yorkshire pit village primary school...

  • He really hates clams

  • If he spoke to me like that, I`d tell him to stick his drum sticks, money and fame up his ass!

  • From what I've heard, everyone to whom Buddy spoke this way more than deserved it.

  • This is the reality of this man ....

Great Drummer ... A True DIRT BAG .

Not a very nice Human Being

  • 'Buddy ..what do you do to warm up?'

"Uhmm...I usually take my hands out of my pockets"

Hey, he worked his ass off to be the best and gave greenies the boot camp of perfection-a lost warrior of no B.S.

  • I recently talked to Buddy´s former bass player from the late 70s, Tom Warrington. He told me that working for Buddy was like playing major league sports for a very demanding coach. He credited Buddy with teaching him how to become a truly professional musician.

  • I am sure Duke Ellington never spoke to band like this.

  • @britcomic Well, he should have. Buddy's band was much tighter than Duke's.

Here's something Buddy would never tolerate - check the video on YT titled Ellington - Perdido.

You will see, in the first tenor chair, Paul Gonsalves, fast asleep.

Buddy would never tolerate being embarassed by that kind of crap. Pro musicians do NOT sleep or fuck off on the bandstand - period. If you do, pack your bags and fuck you, and go look for another gig ~

  • @MarkR1957 Imagine Ellington telling Gonsalves to pack his bags! I know that concert well and it is certainly shocking to see Gonsalves (who, like so many jazz musicians of the era, had a bad drug habit) comatose on the stand. Duke's method of punishment was to make PG play endless, hard solos - so PG's punishment was the audience's delight. Rich was undoubtedly a drummer of genius but on the evidence of this recording, a horrible human being, in contrast to Duke, who was beautiful in every way.

  • SAXOPHONES? YOU GOTTA FUCKIN BE KIDDIN ME!

  • FUCK ALL OF YOU....... LOL

  • thats not Buddy just stop this stupid madness.

  • AND SAXAPHONES?! YOU GOTTA FUCKIN BE KIDDIN ME!! HOW DARE YOU CALL YOURSELVES PRFOSSIONALS!!

  • I didn't think they had those sorts of words back then...

  • I watched Buddy fire one of his horn players when they played at Disneyland, back in or around 1983. He got up in the middle of a song, went over to the young horn player, put his hand on his shoulder and said "get up and get off my stage, you're fired. Will never forget that day.

  • @theringoone : WOOH!..Buddy was no joke..he took his MUSIC seriously! =oO

  • @tornmask It is the Gods honest truth. I still can't believe that I witnessed that. I am a musician, well then, I was a shocked musician, and went home telling myself ,"maybe I should do something else with my life". Buddy in my opinion, was the VERY best drummer that this planet will ever see, but if he ever needed a part time job in his life, he could have been a poster boy for Prozac! He was the best at both!

  • Breaks my heart to hear this.

  • as much as i like buddy, this is a bit much

  • I would have layed the cunt out if he'd talked to me like that, the mouthy little fucker would have lost his fucking teeth.

  • Comment removed

  • @MarkR1957 It seems that Buddy didn't think any of the 'Talented' people in his band had the talent either, I play classical, jazz, rock and folk quitar to a very high standard, i also practice Pencat Silat, an indonisian martial art at competion level and have done so for the last 21 years, so takeing on that arrogant little fuck wouldn't have been a problem. Just by my mentioning that i practice Pencat Silat would have been enough for him to shut his filthy mouth and back down. You talk crap.

  • @Lamvesp You don't practice any Martial Arts. One of the first things we are taught is that we use our skills for sport or to defend ourselves or others from harm. We do NOT use martial arts to "knock someone's teeth out" becuase they say something that we don't like. Any true Martial Artist knows, and follows, that code. If someone insults you, you walk away. You don't hammer them becuase they called you a name.

    True Martial Artists know this, and since you don't, well . . . . . . .

  • @MarkR1957 I practice Pencat Silat, it's an attack and defence martial art with it's roots in war not sport. What's with the 'we' you doughnut? You know fuck all about anything to do with martial arts, so why lie like that. I'll tell you gain, if anyone verbally abused me the way Buddy Rich verbally abused his band members i would have punched his teeth down his throat martial art or not. Now stop acting the spak and go get your diaper changed. "One of the first things 'we' are taught" FFS! haha

  • @Lamvesp Talking shit on the internet is not impressive.

  • @ridah223 And your point is?

  • I've said it before and I will say it again...Buddy was a Jazz/big band player and was playing with the best musicians on planet Earth at the time. May have been an asshole, but that's just how people were at that time; they had thick skin, this was the only way to get through to musicians who thought their shit didn't stink! I gaurantee the next show was amazing! Being a pro musicians back then was most certainly a privaledge, not a flash in the pan like it is for some 'musicians' these days.

  • Bet he really loves the band deep down

  • @bramstokerful -Oh yeah, tough love...don't like it?! Go play at a fucking Holiday Inn or the rat hole bar on the edge of town for drunks who didn't care! He made players better with his brand of expertise and professional yet aggressive mentoring. Think Justin Bieber...there you go; that kid would be back on his family farm shucking corn in three shows [or less!] back then!

  • "I play with the greatest fucking musicians in the world. How dare you play like that to me".

    haha

  • You can convert this or any youtube video to an mp3 at audiogetnow..com

  • My dad was in buddy's trumpet section and said they endured this nightly haha

  • @TOAOM123 What is your dad's name, and what year(s) was he on Buddy's band?

    Thanks for the info ~

  • Comment removed

  • Buddy Rich has a potty-mouth!! Ha HA HA....ain't that some motherfuckin shit! Fuckin pottymouth sonofabitch! I'm the stoned dude in the back laughin' my ass off while Buddy zeroes in on the fat fucker in the front, who can't stop wiping his sweaty forehead with his hanky.....

  • make no mistake when I switch up the channel, Im Buddy Rich when I fly off the handle...makes Mark E Smith look like James Last

  • Buddy is the man!

  • The worst drummer in jazz history.

  • OLD SCHOOL KAT!!! LOVE IT!!!

  • "sunberst1" Said it exactly..and I don't expect everyone to understand how Buddy was when in performance mode or how passionate and expert his playing was. Of course he sounded pissed. Watch the band play when they're "on". Watch him play and lead them. He is absorbed and so too is his band. His intensity carries over off the stage. I feel sorry for the guys that had to take it. Everyone knew what he was like to work for and they chose to be in his band. Let's remove this and stop the attacks.

  • It sounds like a cross between Al Pacino famous speech in "Scent of a Woman" and Pacino as Tony Montana in "Scarface". I was just waiting for him to whip out some huge ass drum sticks and go "Say Hello to my little F'n Friends"

  • I Guess Buddy never hear of the coaching technics of John Wooden :-) He was able to motivate anyone with a velvet glove. To bad the guys had to go thru that abuse.

There is no excuse for that behavior in my book.

  • I Guess Buddy never hear of the coaching technics of John Wooden :-) He was able to motivate anyone with a velvet glove. To bad the guys had to go thru that abuse.

There is no excuse for that behavior in my book.

  • I'm guessing they deserved it after all that

  • fuckin fuck

  • Buddy was a perfectionist and dedicated to making every performance his personal best, and he expected total focus from his band. It was my understanding that this was after a performance where the band was the worst of any amateur band you can imagine. They embarrassed Buddy Rich, I don't blame him; they deserved getting chewed out.

  • @Bogart92691 No, it's pretty well known that Buddy was always like that. He was so ascerbic and difficult to play with that other elite musicians rarely played with him. That's why he had to recruit (talented) relatively unknown musicians, whom he regularly lambasted.

  • Who's your Buddy???

  • Oh my god, this tirade is amazing. I wasn't there so I can't really pick sides, but it's so goddamn hilarious to hear Buddy use all of this slang and all of those similes to describe his band. If you were to animate this you could take it in a dozen directions because of the freedom the language in this rant gives you. Favorited.

  • Reminds me of James Brown and Ray Charles....

  • Buddy rich was a grumpy man.

  • Beautiful!

No "Yo Cat" , "try to take over the job" attitude on this band from hired players.

    GOD BLESS Buddy Rich!!

  • That's a BAND LEADER!

  • Wow, strange how some of the general public think buddy could do NO wrong at all, NONE! Even his psychotic behavior, rooted in anger, makes perfect sense to them.

Makes one wonder if some of the torch-wielding defenders might actually be enamored... ya know, "sweet on" the old guy. Maybe so, maybe not... if they are, love is love right?

  • haha WOW , unexpected , Great drummer never the less.

  • Are you sure this brilliant drummer isn't Italian? He sure sounds like my family when they're pissed off.

  • one of the best-ever rants... this is up there with Christrian bale

  • All you fuckers need to chill the fuck out. Jesus Christ.

  • @NintendoSwii Jesus has nothing to do with this behavior. Treating the people who work for you like that is wrong, plain and simple. God given talent does not qualify boorish stupidity.

  • Haha he didn't say that on Sesame Street !! LOL tell em' Buddy Preach that shit =)

  • If you don't wanna get chewed like this then don't ever screw up with a player of Rich's caliber OR work in a Michelin star chef's kitchen...

  • @shaggychef If I found out the head chef treated his staff that way, I'd never eat in that restaurant again, plus get everyone I know to stay away. Many great chefs have motivated their kitchens to perfection without chewing them out. Which means its doable. Getting out of control angry makes them more nervous, and some perform worse leading to impulse firing without concern about how that chef will cover his bills, pay his mortgage, or take care of his family. Weak arrogance, and conceit.

  • Awesome!

And that`s why he is the best drummer there ever was and the best drummer there will ever be!

  • sometimes to be the best you gotta be hard. people need to quit being little pussies and man up and have them told whats real, it's the only way you will ever learn to get better. good example, the marines. they have to be hard for them to be the best.

  • You know what's funny, is that I don't recall him ever having a band quit on him. He could talk like tis to his band and they hung in there, until he fired them or they finished the dates. I could be wrong about the quitting thing though.

  • Dont you hate the irony of spelling "professional" incorrectly.

  • @guitdude09 - Not sure that's irony. Now, had he misspelled something like.. "intelligence." Then that would be irony.

  • @tisdue yes, if i spelled professional incorrectly i think the fact that it makes me look "not very professional" is the irony.

  • At the end of the day he's a drummer, thats it, who the fuck else does he think he is?, you can learn to be a proffessional musician without the band leader being a fucking asshole, they should have all beat the shit out of him and then quit.

  • @guitdude09 I'm guessing that any asshole who can't SPELL "professional" has no fucking idea what it takes to BE one... just a guess

  • @leedrennan yes you're probably correct , but since i indicated that i was aware of my mistake and therefore i do know how the word is spelled correctly then i guess that makes the only asshole here, to be you. Have a nice day moron.

  • @leedrennan and also dickhead, a "typo" is not an indication of a persons spelling ability, you would know this if you stepped back from being a jerkoff for a while and observed humans for a time, they don't like trolling assholes either, asshole.

  • Comment removed

  • @HardRockDrummer666 "Obviously you don't understand" listen moron i do fucking understand, i just dont see how someone can run down people who work for him and think he can get away with it because of his job, go fuck yourself hard cock dummer. "That would be like BRUCE LEE's students beating him up and quitting!" bruce lee wasn't a asshole like this "drummer" . "To put things in perspective " how about you not thinking everyone is as stupid as you dumbass.

  • @HardRockDrummer666, go fuck yourself, ill not banter with a witless dumbass!. I dont care who the fuck you are, no one deserves having some asshole talk to them like that, if he can't express his disappointment without resorting all sorts of childish names , then he needs anger management therapy, i dont give a fuck how well he plays the fucking drum kit. He's needs to show the respect he thinks he deserves. As for you, you are obviously a simple minded buffoon,Mr hard cock strummer 666 lol.

  • @HardRockDrummer666 "Eat shit and die, you punk ass fuck!" now i see why you agree with running people down , your an angry little man, i dont care who the fuck someone is, no boss should talk to his employees this way, you might accept being the subservient bitch that lets people run him down but most others would'nt take that from anyone. Maybe you should get back to me when you have control of your emotions, my angry little friend, ciao bella.

  • @HardRockDrummer666 "You started the name calling, punk" sure i did but you started insulting me first saying "i dont understand" this simple dilema haha, all because i dont believe people should be talked to this way, thats as complex as it get's."you simple minded imbesel!!
