I loved this song done by huddie. But i couldnt understand what he was saying because it was so fast. Odetta did a wonderful job with this RIP O and H
this song was actaully a song by leadbelly after he had been recording for Alan Lomax in was Washington D.C for the Library of Congress(well worth checking this out if u love blues), after they had finished recording Alan Lomax and Pete seeger decided to take leadbelly (Huddie Ledbetter) and there wives out for food but every where they tryed to eat they where turned away due reasons in the song, such an amazing performance but deffo worth checking out. the origanal.
I marched on Washington arm in arm with O. when I was 19--I'm 63 now. I must say if you ever needed a hug, she was the best source for one. Some couldn't handle her sheer power, but she had all the tenderness as well. Cyril
I've never been much of a fan of Odetta's singing, even though I like her ideas and recognize and respect her huge influence in music. Just my personal opinion. However in this song I think every note she sings is just perfect. This song just has such a great anti-racist message and is sung with such soul, I've listened to this song like 50 times already its just so good!

It was written by Leadbelly when he came to Washington, DC, with John Lomax and couldn't find a place to stay.

What a performance.
You get an artist of this stature once in a generation - we were lucky to share the planet with her!
