I can't believe Hedman and Tavares went before Duchene. As an Avalanche fan I laugh myself to death about it, but the GMs in Tampa and NY must be losing sleep right about now. Duchene is a superstar in the making.

The avalanche have gotten some draft steals in recent years. Like Elliot in 2009 who was projected top 25 player went to the avs. In 2010 Calvin Pickard a Top 15 went to the avs in the second round. This year we dont have any 2nd round picks, but we do have the 2nd and 11th overrall. Crazy future ahead

Sorry buddy there are 3 zones in hockey. There is also speed, heart and alot of other intangibles to go with skill. Right now, so far, Matt duchene is the better HOCKEY PLAYER. The isles were in the exact same boat as the avs two years ago. The avs young players thrived dispite constant injuries. The isles have fallen on their face. You're telling me duchene an Tavares have had nothing to do with that? Maybe little, but something to do with it nonetheless.

Tavares what? What's he been up to in this 22 losses out of 24 games... Must not have been playing, if e was clearly they would have gone 24-0.... Duchene is better than Tavares in the d zone, n zone an equal to him in the o Zone. That's just the way it is so far. Who knows what tomorrow brings, but right now duchene is BETTER than tavares.

You cannot compare the two with their game scores. Duchene plays on a much better offensive team than Tavares. I believe you that Duchene has had more success than Tavares, but Tavares has more individual skill.

John Tavares's offensive instincts are on par with Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin. I've seen him make plays that leave you scratching your head. some backhand saucer passes standing behind the net only for Kyle Okposo to shoot wide or dead center into the goalies chest. His speed leaves you with so much to be desired though. His skill level is beyond anything I've ever seen. Some Zach Parise power skating lessons would help him out.

Duchene was hindered by playing on a better team. Tavares was given the #1 center job while Duchene had to play behind Stastny. He will change that next year. He also had to deal with all the injuries that seemed to attack all his linemates. Tavares will need to become MUCH better defensively to be considered a Toews like player. Toews would never have a -14 year or whatever Tavares was even with the Isles. Don't talk about favorable systems because Duchene was not in one.

They were perdicting Tavarese and Hedman to be the most NHL ready. Duchene had a way better season then either of them, he has a good chance of winning rookie of the year. Plus the AVS were picked to finished dead last in the west and probably the league. Look at them now, in the playoffs. Might have stumbled in, but it will give the young guys in Colorado alot of experience.

A rookie favored system in Colorado while Tavares didn't have much to work with in Long Island...still both are great players and competitors. Tavares will have his time to shine too and the top 3 picks of this draft should all be hall of famers. Hedman is a Nick Lidstorm type defensivemen with a little more offensive minded game. Tavares to me is a Jonathan Toews mold and Duchene following Joe Sakic

@knight44 don't diminish Tavares. He finished the NHL season strong with 54 points and then ent on to lead the world championships in goals with 7. You know who else finished their rookie year strong and then lead the wc in goals with 7? 51 goal scoring rocket richard winner Steven Stamkos... There is a reason why he scored72 goals as a 16 year old and its not because of a high shooting% either, Gretzky wasn't fast but he is the most domininat player of alltime.

Before the draft, I had predicted that Duchene would end up being the best player from the draft and the hype on Tavares/Hedman was just BS. The kid is a great skater, has a good wrist shot, two-way play...but most importantly, he has the intangibles, comparable to Toews, Mike Richards and Zach Parise. It was easy to tell just based on his interviews and junior playoff production alone.

Fast forward a few months and Duchene is in Calder Trophy talks while Tavares is not...Colorado stole a gem!

My favorite moment is at 0:29 when the Avs management group is called up to the stage and Duchene takes a deep breath as if to calm himself. It's so clear he wanted to go to the Avs which makes it even more awesome that he did.
