I'm thinking of getting a ninja 250r as my first bike. Most likely get it in the next month or so. Is there any other bikes that aren't too expensive and would be good bikes to learn on and get comfortable with the controls and shifting etc. Before you recommend me any bikes just know that I'm from New Zealand and here we have a 250cc limit for learner license drivers. So just keep that in mind and thank you.
You have no idea... do you know how much more a 1000cc bike weighs than a 600cc...? do you know how hard that extra weights is to control in the corners? and do you know how much power from a 1000cc is wasted through a slipping back tire?
My first was a Yamaha XJ400 special II, and I remember the first time I rode it, it was scary fast to me, then after about 3 years, I was bored, so I bought a SECA 750, and that was scary fast, I sold that about 6 years ago, last year I test rode a V-Max, and I WANT ONE !!! although they are not too good in the twisties, it scares me, and I like it !!
What experience do you have on the track? The reality is unless you are Valentino Rossi you'll lap the average track faster in a 600 than in a litre bike. If I gave you a Yamaha R6 and an R1 and let to lap Philip Island a few times in each chances are you'll see far better time in the R6.
ty very much for the advice im thinkin of getting a 400 i did have a gsxr 750 all lined up and ready to go but now i think ill find a 400 for cheaper (can buy a new bike , cant buy a new life....)
Even though I still WANT a bigger bike, I bought my Ninja 250 to keep me alive until I learn more. You and a few others helped influence that decision. Thank you!!

How about a KX-500 for a training bike?
I learned on one, and cannot find a bike now, that pushes my limits.

Old uncle guy driving the go kart, and Mordeth on the Ninja... that'd shut the 1000cc guy up ;)

I can't see but are you using your brakes at all ?
I know you don't wanna slow down but sometimes you have to break to go around a corner...
sorry for being a smartass

You sir, are an idiot. I hope that you didn't actually mean to say a 600cc motor has 600hp.

I missed that one. Try learning to ride, on a kx-500, it is either off, or on(extreme)
-have a good one

The best riders in the world started on 50cc dirt ot pocket bikes.
My first bike is a Honda CBR250RR, I don't feel any need to move up for now as it's more than fast enough for me.

I learned on a 2006 GSXR 750. 16,000 KM on it now. It's all in your head and your wrist. If you're an idiot you'll be an idiot on any bike you buy.

So what do you figure about a 500cc (40hp-ish) scooter for a first bike? Something in the Kymco Xciting ballpark?
