The JX-3P was the first synth I owned. Also got the PG-200 programmer with it, which was the perfect way to learn an analog synth all by yourself. Also got the sequencer to sync with a TR-707 drumcomputer, very nice those days (mid 80's). The JX-3P is a great synth to create basic but spicy sequences mixing in with whatever else you have. Nice pieve to own, and I will never ever sell it.
You do this with the Tape Memory in/out (load/save). How... I'm not sure. Try online for a manual, or send an email to Roland, they DO react and send copies of users manuals to home adresses.
@cicciobarbara I know you can use a computers audio interface to record the settings, instead of using a real tape recorder... I don't know more, as I've never tried this...
@culturaleyes A little late with the answer... but yeah I guess you could... it will never sound exactly the same as both synths have their own unique timbre.
right away you can hear that the jx-3p has great distortion analog drip...and that awesome roland chorus. The Jx-3p sound in general is currently hot in alot of dance music productions.
both jx3p and jx8p are great synths, unfortunately not VCO but capable of some nice analog brass and string sounds. Jx3p is great for electro and detroit alike techno
Thanks. Actually I already have a JX-3P and I do like it ;)
But I find that its really a compliment to Juno and not a replacement for it. So its better to get both Juno and JX.. Although my dream vintage synth is actually Jupiter 4. I like better than Jupiter 8 or 6
Juno and JX are two totally different synths. There is no use comparing them, a lot of people do, don't understand why.
I have both, and if I would loose one, it wouldbe a serious issue for me, because I use these analog pieces of gear all the time. I don't use any vst's or stuff, only ableton+ ableton effects so those synths are the core of my sound...
I really have no idea, never worked with ARP synths. I haven't even researched on them. Hmmm... maybe I must. I borrowed an MS20 yesterday, be sure to check out the vids I made!
If you buy the programmer (pg200) with it I would say defenitely YES, but f you're buying just the synth, without the programmer, NO. It's not that easy to program without it even if you know what you're doing, so I wouldn't recommend this, if you're not a little experienced. Synths I would recommend: Roland SH201, Roland Juno 60 (has no midi), Nord Lead, Yamaha AN1x, Alesis Ion, SH101 (monophonic).
Hope that was helpfull! If you have more questions, don't hesitate to ask them!
I have been looking for the PG200 wince I got the JX3P. It's become very rare and extremely expensive. There is another way: you can buy the midi retrofit from ORGANIX (google that) and when you install that you can use a BCR2000 or something else as a programmer, you would first need to program the BCR2000 so it would send out the right CC messages... alot of work for someone fairly new to synths.
I would really recommend a second hand SH201, should be about €200-€250
Don't judge a SH201 by it's presets, as they, most honestly, all suck ass.
The downside about the Juno 60 is that it lacks midi. Juno 106 does have midi but has bad voice chips so it is a high risk getting it as it's very expensive to repair.
You should consider the AN1X too. I just bought it, and it's really really good.
ok this is about to get real emberassing but: you're saying that the presets of a synth don't matter? Even though almost all presets of the sh-201 suck, it's possible to get great sounds from it?
you know i really liked the sh-201, especially the oportunity to choose the waveform and for sure the d-beam too, but ... i hated his sounds.
You should check it out on youtube. Watch a many video's you can! Lesten to demo's, read reviews, do it all. I recommend buying it second hand, people sell it for much less then it's worth. I've known people selling it for €250 regularly!
are they still making the midi upgrade? Site says TBA, I have this synth and enjoy it though it would be infinitely better with the PG, just don't want to spend 3 times what I paid for the synth just to get one.
I disagree. Althoug, this is a very personal thing. I think as far as intuitive programming, this synth isn't the greatest, but there are worse synths. I'd take the jx3p programming style over the microkorg any day. Just to compare. But hey, you have to love a synth to make it work, if you don't, it's not the right one for you. I've sold great synths (nord lead, ion, novation nova) just because I didn't 'feel' it...
Yeah I love my JX-3P .. so underated and a 'secret weapon' these days... I agree you do not need the programmer in the studio - good for live tweaks (depending on music genre) but easy as is with the slider. Check my vids for my JX-8P/DX7 (and a little JX-3P towards the end). Will upload a pure JX-3P vid soon as it deserves it!
Thx man. It's really something else this JX3P. I have a Juno 60 and it really sounds nothing like the jx3p... The JX3P is much more agressive and can sound much more 'rubbery' like a 303. The Juno is more lush, warm and gritty.
Cool Vid!

For a lower priced vintage keyboard I think it sounds pretty great. Do you think the sounds at 3:30 can be made on a Juno 60?

Jx... without a pg200 is about 200-300€

man that's too bad.
for my first synth I had to decide between the sh-201 and another one. i took the other one 'cause i really hated the presets of the sh-201.
besides it is about 550€ i think.
you recommended the juno 60 didn't you? It's about 600€ i think.
what about the jupiter 8? can you recommend that one?
yayalovesmuzz 2 years ago
Jupiter is expensive.
Juno is less expensive.
Don't judge a SH201 by it's presets, as they, most honestly, all suck ass.

A reminder: presets ALLWAYS suck.

does this have the portamento? i'm about to get the 60 next week, and for the next one i'm considering either jx3p or 106 .. suggestion?
whisperingvenus 2 years ago
The JX3P does not have portamento. It has, however, 2 oscs, Sync and a cool step-sequencer. It sounds harsher, and more dirty than a Juno.
I would get both :-)
