The nine beats per measure is absolutely essential to this song. I don't think you should be playing this song if you don't have an understanding of the rhythm that propels it. I don't know what to tell you...maybe listen to Sting's song over and over again obsessively and concentrate on the rhythm, the drums...count the beats on your fingers, in your head, or out loud... and don't stop, even if everyone on the train is staring at you.
When I said that it being 9/8 didn't even matter, I didn't mean that it doesn't matter to the song. I was in band for 7 years, so I do understand meter. What I was saying is that I never mentioned a meter and therefore shouldn't be corrected about it. Besides I tried to play this song the way Johnny did, not the way Sting did, so what Sting's version sounds like is irrelevant.

DOUCHE-BAG!!!!!
It's Sting not Cash and it's in odd meter 9/8 not 4/4.
Go die you ignorant piece of shit. To cover a great storyteller like Johnny Cash in the later senile years makes you one of the most ignorant losers on the planet! The money hungry prick who put out that album deserves a bullet. That version sucks. if you can't here that you are a moron.
Thanks for pointing that out. I was just about to say the exact same thing. Also, I don't see how it being in 9/8 changes anything about it because I never even mentioned a meter.
Paulonbass, I hope you can be a little less angry at the world one day. It'll lower your blood pressure, make you feel better and help you live longer. Even though you hope I die, I wish you all the best in life.
9/8 means the bar is a little bit longer and the rhythmic accents are different which gives it a different feel. If you try tapping your fot along to Stings original version you'll see

Also, read the notes on the side. He said that Sting wrote it originally.

its not in 9/8, its in 9/4. 9/8 is grouped in 3 groups of 3 quavers, which this isnt. an apparently small point, but a very important one.

Actually, no. If you listen to the guitar phrasing and drum beat the bar is divided as:
2/3/4 or 2/3/2/2.
9/8 is usually divided 3/3/3, especially in classical music but not in this case

good song, nicely done... you should consider trying to play and sing "the man comes around"
