I have the American special in two tone sunburst. Changed the stock zinc block with a Calahams direct solid steel block and switched out the stock corian nut for a slick LSR roller nut and locking tunners. Together, with a professional set up, I have no tunning issues and it is my number one guitar. Couldn't be happier.
@BigEvilLadia23 Check the Fender website for comparisons on specs, or go play them. What's not to like about the Special?.... for $799 you get great pickups, great neck, badass large headstock, nice finish, and USA made. Personally, I like the neck, pickups, and jumbo frets better than the standard, but that's just me.
I tried one a CAR American Special - the neck was very flat 9.5 radius but I could get used to it - the fit and finish was very good and the paint was beautiful guitar was nice and light in weight - my only complaint is I don't like the Texas Specials they're too strong and once you get your overdrive/dist and other effects it'll run away from you - would rather they use weaker Pu's because they're easier to control other than that it's a nice guitar - I would buy one - USED however..
I thought the Highway 1 series was supposed to be an American made Fender for those with a budget? Now these? I mean they look good but the phrase "Money for old rope" comes to mind.
So, are they worth the price increase over the classic vibe 60? I have an AM standard but with CS 69 pickups and seriously considering a CV 60 candy red as a second guitar.
I recently tried one of these at Sam Ash on 48th St.
Truthfully..I would buy this guitar on a looks basis ALONE..it's esentially a shiny Highway One with slightly different pickups! I would just 'Gut It' and start over!
The pickups..honestly..SUCK!! The 'Atomic' humbucker is anemic and the Texas Specials are typical single coils that are noisy as hell! Don't even get me started on those SHITTY PING tuners!
I know..they're trying to keep it cost conscious;but it'l cost me $200 to get it good!!
I've tried American Standards and Highway Ones. Knew about the presale of the American Special. It's really a matter of taste, nothing more, nothing less. Got the Highway One Sunburst Mapple SSS Dec/2009. Just loved how it feels and sounds. The American Standard felt so... standard, and the pickups were too... default.
The Highway One in the other hand has a contour body with 70's headstock and jumbo frets! That's very easy and fast playing! Great bends! The Alnico III pickups impressed me with its versatility from blues to hard rock it was able to. I was thinking of putting some Texas Specials on it like the American Specials, but this Alnico's III really proved that they're definately a keeper. That was the right joice for me and my taste. That's a matter of flavor.
About the Satin Finish I can say I was worried. But then you can see that beautiful exclusive finish will age beautifuly. The American Specials are essentialy a Highway One that shines with Texas Specials. But I wanted more versatility, Alnico's III suited me perfeclly.
Why does the HSS have 2 screws on the left side of the pickups and only one on the right side? What if I wanna change pickguards? Most strat pickguards have one hole on each side :(
because some of the parts are from Mexico Strats, I'm pretty sure the bridge is the same smaller spaced Import bridge design and not the vintage ( USA Spaced ) bridge that comes on the Vintage reissues. The American Standard just dropped in price so it is only about 200 more this
Actually, there's no part of Mexican Strat on this one it seems : the body is carved out of a single piece of wood and the bridge is a vintage-style one as I've read on the Fender site.
I tried one the other day and the Candy Apple played nicely albeit with a better set and the tri burst played even nicer with the rosewood fret board.
People will probably mod them with modern bridge saddles, pickups and a hard case as it comes with a gig bag only.
However, that aside, you can just pick it up and play straight away. Sure there's others but the money you save you can put to an amp, cab, FX and other accessories.
just hearing it's made for working guitarists makes me happy, most companies don't really think about who really wants to buy the guitars for real purposeful reasons, instead of as art pieces
Very similar to the highway one series, same neck, same greasebucket circuitry. The pups are different and the finish is polyurethane. All in all its great value!!!!
Come on proguitarshop you are the best ...have you lost your mind !!! ??... ''GLOSS URETHANE FINISH WICH LETS THE WOOD BREATHE AND RESONATE '' i know you wanna sell your stuff everybody gotta make a living but STAY TRUE
No it doesn't. The thickness of Finish it what matters. I have a CS 65 NOs finished in Nitro and an American artist series strat finished in poly. The Artist series strat does not sound "choked" at all compared to the Custom Shop NOS. Yes the two feel and play slightly different, but don't get caught up in the nitro vs poly hype. The only reason poly got a bad rap is because companies have been spraying it on miles thick. Get one that isn't as thick of a finish and you have a winner.
I suggest that you go to a guitarcenter, and play a bunch of strats. A whole lot. Unplugged.
Find the 5 or so guitars that sound the best unplugged. Don't just play one of each kind, play 3 or 4 of each kind of strat. 3 or 4 MIM standars, 3 or 4 MIA standards, ect.
Anyways like I said, take the 5 best and plug them in. Also, if one feels a lot better but doesn't sound as good plugged in as another one, don't worry. You can always change that with a pickup swap.
This strat is nothing compared to the 2007 highway one single coil nitro daphne blue strat. The highway one is pure legendary!

Differences:
The AmSpl Strat has that gawd aweful huge CBS era '70's headstock. Urethane body finish on the AmSpl, nitro on the AmStd.
I'd look at other Strat models. MIM, Roadworn, American Standard.
