baahahahahaha old mate looks confused as hell in this vid, ah it's a sedan up til behind the doors then it becomes a truck. hahahaha. ute mate, it's a ute not a very quick one either. up the mighty falcon.
I never too late to captive import this truck. It could be Chevy or GMC. GM can't use the name UTE in the US bcuz its an insult to the Native American tribe living primarily in Utah and Colorado.
@racingchamp101 ugly in australia? this is coming from a fukin yank... what would you know about what we think of our cars, if anything you yanks made our car ugly.. you probly drive a fukin camry or some peice of shit.
@DjokaStokic Because Holden designed and built it. Pontiac are "borrowing" it, and now Chevrolet are using the Holden Caprice as their new police-spec Caprice
@VancouverCanucksRock Pontiac don't know how. In Australia, where this one's from, there is very little call for something that does 12mpg, and turns like an aircraft carrier. These can still carry almost a tonne, yet handle like a car

Then, as if they haven't given your eyes enough of a beast raping, they tack on two tons of ugly plastic trim on the side and paint it shiny so people will know that your dumb ass is coming from miles away. I'm trying hard to come up with something good to say about this car, but I just can't. Actually, that was a lie. I wasn't trying to say anything good about the car because I hate everything about it and anyone stupid enough to buy one
This is easily one of the dumbest looking cars I've seen in years. It's a car with an identity crisis: it can't decide whether it wants to be a car or a truck, so it tries to be both and the result is a goofy looking cross between the back end of a Datsun pickup truck and the front half of one of those dog shit $5 canvas sneakers from Walmart
Most likely it'll make it to US shores in LHD as the Chevy El Camino -- picking up where the line left off 20+ years ago. Ford may also reintroduce the Ranchero line with the import of an LHD Falcon in the near future. I have personally spotted two heavily-disguised LHD Holden utes (with Michigan plates) driving the back roads of San Diego (CA) County.
That would seem to make sense to bring it here, even as a Chevy. One has to assume GM probably dropped a good amount of coin on bringing it here as a G8.
@JWROWE3 Not a huge amount. Their biggest expense would be marketing. The Holden Commodore, on which this one is based, was designed from day one to be left and right hand drive. All Pontiac did to them is a handful of style changes
G'day viewers, Big Merv from Australia here. I have owned utes since I was 17, now 41, and they are as Australian as Meat Pies, Kangaroo's and Holden cars which this "ute" is a HOLDEN. I own a Black SSZ version of the previous VZ model and all you need to do to them to make them look tough, is lower the suspension, nice wheels and a good exhaust. The front end on these Pontiac versions look crap and was only installed for the American market, the Aussie version is a sweeter looking unit.
@jgto17 Keep lobbying, or import one from Saudi Arabia. The Holden Commodore (what both Pontiac models are based on) is exported to Arab nations wearing Chevy badges
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I mean sure this thing is unique, but it's completely impractical. There's no storage, and no one in the U.S. would be proud to drive that thing around.
haha "sport trucks" (or as we call them in Australia: Utility Vehicles, or Utes) are very handy depending on your hobby or job. I can see why people don't drive utes in the US, but they can push out a lot more speed than a sedan due to a lot of less weight if your into performance. Holden sell a fair few of these in Australia and that front end is a limmited edition ute in Australia for the 2010 Holdens atm
@Slyk3r Are you in Australia? Sorry if this is a stupid question but are the cars left hand drive or right hand? I really want to get a Chevy Elky or a Ford Ranchero but I can't find either of them in the U.K.
@Slyk3r This isn't based on the G8; it's based on the Holden Maloo and it's not fooling anyone any more than the Monaro did when it was being passed off as both a Pontiac and a GTO when it was actually neither.
@moparmonster1965 This is Slyk3r, my new account. No it isn't based on the maloo, are you even from Australia? The VE Maloo back, side skirts and whole front end looks different, the VE maloo has a 6.2L engine not a 6L as well.. It's basically an SS with a Pontiac G8 front end.. You can get these limited edition SSV front ends, my friend has a black one with a 6L... I don't really like Holdens anyway but yeah...
@Gundill10 I never once claimed be from Australia so I have no idea where you got that idea. But if you look at the parts they can't change, like the ugly upsweep and the tiny window at the B and C pillars, it's identical to the Maloo.
You act as though GM doesn't have one basic V8 that comes in different displacements.
@moparmonster1965 Ugh sorry I said it wrong and made myself sound like a bogan haha. This vehicle is based off the Holden Commodore SS. The Maloo is a HSV (Holden Special Vehicle) which is like their higher performance range I guess? The chassis' from the HSV range are all the same as the Holden range, for example, the clubsport is the same chassis as the Holden Commodore sedan; it just has a different bodykit, slightly different interior and a different engine in it.
@moparmonster1965 The Holden VE SS Sedan, station wagon and sports utility vehicles have L98 6 litre V8s, where as the Clubsports have I think LS3s (6.3L). So the design of this is based from the VE Commodore SS, because the Maloo is the same chassis, just different engine/bodykit/interior. The interior of this is exactly the same as the Holden VE SS, and has an L98 like the Holden. As i said before: people have these body kits as they sold them as a limited edition Holden VE SSV sedan or ute
@Gundill10 You're just proving my point, though, because it's simply splitting hairs like trying to explain the difference between a Camaro and a Firebird: they're not exactly the same, but the basis and foundation are.
gm tried it in the late 60's early 70's and failed. Ford tried also yet still failed. Why the hell is it going to work now? and didnt pontiac get booted anywya?
haha so true! im going to be picking a VE ute up in the next few months i hope. But man they are everywhere fill the back with a tarp, water a few bags of ice and some bev's and your sweet for summa
Hey there, not sure if you meant gm invented the "half breed' or utility or ute as we in Australia call it.FYI FORD Australia invented this type of Vehicle in 1934...cheers
@bandoboy32 It may yet come back with a Chevy badge. It fits a niche between the small Japanese pickups, and those monsters that slot between an Australian ute and an ACTUAL truck. The big difference, is that this one handles almost exactly like the sedan it's based on, which can out corner a 5-Series BMW
gm might aswell sell the whole holden fleet overseas instead of bit's and pieces like holden is 1 of gm's most profitable car manufactures they sell holdens in the uk the middle east the states but they dont offer the whole fleet exept for aus and nz ofcourse but dont know why but they should and they should sell them with the holden body kit's in the states not the pontiac
I own a 1979 El Camino, and now that they made another one resembling it, I want it. I don't care who made it, I don't care, I don't car if it's ugly, It's going to serve the same purpose as my old one, and I can save gas doing it. (My 79 has a 383 in it). I just hope Pontiac remembers to build a Stardard version of these, other wise I'm going to Australia and getting a Holden.
@undergroundpredator If it comes back as a Chevy, the V8s have a new management system that shuts down cylinders when it doesn't need them. The Holden Commodore ute is RHD, but you may be able to get one RHD from an Arab nation, such as Saudi Arabia, wearing Chevy badges.
its a division from GM pontiac except its made in australia so they call it after the person who established the company (HOLDEN) i think.its very popular down here in OZ when u guys have the GT pontiac 2 door one back there
plenty of these sitting out at elizebeth in SA now mearly scrap metal if the article was correct in the Adelaide Advertiser (our local newspaper) for the foreigners.
If you want a truck then get a truck (big or small). If you want a sports car / coupe, then get one...don't try to get a sports coupe truck like this, then its' neither - what's the purpose of these vehicles? Are they for people who really don't need / use a REAL truck?
@cutiesmuscles Because it's a hell of a lor more efficient than a lumbering 12mpg truck to carry loads less than a tonne; they're a lot more fun than a Toyota Hilux or any of the Japanese equivalents
No, your not biased. CamaroTransAmTeam... And by the way this will never see the light of day now that Pontiac is all done. So idk what Ford ass this thing will be kicking.. the only thing its gonna be kicking , is daisies.... along with the rest of GM..
I never said it was a ford..... I said to get a ford. oh and btw holden will be owned bysome chinese bloke soon neways so GM can go RIP cause thats all thats gonna happen mate
who said that it'll be ownd by chinese? U people just dont seem to realize that GM went bankrupt, not out of buisness. All that is gonna happen is massive downsizing of there market, meaning that they will concentrate more on fewer cars, resulting in better made, built, designed and performing cars like the '09 CTS-V, for example. And Fords suck by the way. lol.
Every Pontiac for the past 12 years has been a re-badged Australian Holden. That's been Pontiac's problem, and that's why their time is up. Every 'new' car Pontiac imports all look and drive like it's already 3 to 5 years old.
lol so the Grand Prix, G6, G5, Grand Am, etc. were all Holden vehicles? in that case, so is the Impala, Malibu, and Cobalt lol. The only Holden products we have are the GTO and the G8, if im correct.
ur definitely right about that leading to their downfall, but since when was the Grand Prix a rebadged holden? Its the exact same as a Impala, just rebadged as a Pontiac, and has been since 1999
Or GM HQ are just starting to realise that tucked away in a fay, far away land there are engineers who actually know how to make good cars and not the shit they've been pumping out for the last 30yrs which led to their downfall?
@moaski@moaski The only thing the Pontuiac Grand Prix had in common with the Holden Commodore (nearest Holden Equivalent) was its engine. The VT-VY Commodores (1997-2003) were all rear wheel drive, have V6 and V8 power, and were razor sharp on every detail by comparison. To say the VT is a clone of the Grand Prix is VERY wrong
Dime a dozen here along with the similar Ford variant. Popular with builders, tradesman, farmers, sports crowd totting a couple of offroad bikes or towing a boat on the weekend and a trailer durring the week. In the days before the Japanese began building utes, Holden and Ford utes were it, faster and more comfortable than what came of Japan for a long time. Carry hay bails, tools, take the girlfriend to a posh night out, arrive in style, then back to being a workhorse the next day.
You can thank Susan Docherty for putting the final nail in the Pontaic's Coffin. She and Fritz Henderson are two incompetent automotive executives who would be better off applying for a job at McDonald's!
kinda sad though, in my opinion I felt that Pontiac was coming back and building great cars like the G8 GXP, but oh well it seems like right when the momentum was building up for this brand they axed it
I would buy it in a heart beat! Where I live, I don't need 4wd, but I do need a small pick up. So right now I own a 98 Firebird Formula for my speed and a 94 nissan pick up for my utility. This would combine the best of both worlds and I could consolidate my driveway herd.
As for looks, I think most guy's wives are fat and ugly, but that doesn't stop guys from marrying and even having sex with them. I think driving this car would be a little easier to justify than marrying a fat chick.
but the back is nice but it just doesnt go with the rest of the car which is the front, more like the front is sporty car and the back is sporty pickup but both together ,.... doesnt go
i looked up the maloo, which is the Australian version of this truck(el camino) and it is a beast! yeah at first it looks kinda ugly but it starts to grow on you. at first i hated the g body(78-87) el camino and now i've owned a 85 el camino conquista for the last six years and although i only drive it on weekends it's by far the funnest car i ever owned.
It would be interesting if they put the v6 from the base camaro/ CTS in that as a base option, and then offered an LS3 as a GT. Yes its hideous but the el camino wasnt about looks.

I would have bought one from GM, but they closed the Ponti brand name, now I will have to import one from Aussy-land.
GM went for the 2010 Crap-maro, it has already been recalled 3 times...LOL

Pontiac May Stay you never know
i know in Canada GM is Keeping Pontiac Longer than in the USA
prckay 2 years ago
That would be just one 1 recall , up to 1,243 units,it's a loose battery connector.
The car is the biggest bang for your buck.

If you want a truck then get a truck (big or small). If you want a sports car / coupe, then get one...don't try to get a sports coupe truck like this, then its' neither - what's the purpose of these vehicles? Are they for people who really don't need / use a REAL truck?
cutiesmuscles 2 years ago
@cutiesmuscles Because it's a hell of a lor more efficient than a lumbering 12mpg truck to carry loads less than a tonne; they're a lot more fun than a Toyota Hilux or any of the Japanese equivalents

try a ford ute mate. you will have space behind the seat and plenty more power
DerrtyFord 2 years ago
how is this a ford again? u do realize that GM owns Both Pontiac and Holden and the idea for this cam from the Chevy El Camino, right? lol
mtooshort20 2 years ago
I never said it was a ford..... I said to get a ford. oh and btw holden will be owned bysome chinese bloke soon neways so GM can go RIP cause thats all thats gonna happen mate
DerrtyFord 2 years ago
who said that it'll be ownd by chinese? U people just dont seem to realize that GM went bankrupt, not out of buisness. All that is gonna happen is massive downsizing of there market, meaning that they will concentrate more on fewer cars, resulting in better made, built, designed and performing cars like the '09 CTS-V, for example. And Fords suck by the way. lol.
mtooshort20 2 years ago
@mtooshort20 In America it was. Although Holden were building this type of pickup long before Chevrolet were

this is pretty much a maloo ute.
australian vehicle for those who dont know
rhainfleming 2 years ago
Every Pontiac for the past 12 years has been a re-badged Australian Holden. That's been Pontiac's problem, and that's why their time is up. Every 'new' car Pontiac imports all look and drive like it's already 3 to 5 years old.
moaski 2 years ago
lol so the Grand Prix, G6, G5, Grand Am, etc. were all Holden vehicles? in that case, so is the Impala, Malibu, and Cobalt lol. The only Holden products we have are the GTO and the G8, if im correct.
mtooshort20 2 years ago
You're mostly right. I should have specified that any of the decent Pontiac products (GTO, G8) were re-badged Holdens.
GM has taken badge engineering to a whole new level, and ultimately, that was their downfall.
The Grand Prix, GTO, and G8 are re-badged Holdens.
The rest are warmed-over Chevies.
moaski 2 years ago
ur definitely right about that leading to their downfall, but since when was the Grand Prix a rebadged holden? Its the exact same as a Impala, just rebadged as a Pontiac, and has been since 1999
mtooshort20 2 years ago
I thought that the 6th-generation Grand Prix (1997-03) had a carbon-copy Holden equivalent.
I'm not sure which came first, the Pontiac or the Holden, but I thought it was the Aussie?
moaski 2 years ago
no, im pretty sure the pontiac was first b/c it is the equivalent to the Impala. Same exact engine, drivetrain, and chassis
mtooshort20 2 years ago
Well, they ALL share those...hence the name "badge engineering."
moaski 2 years ago
i know, that's what i was implying
mtooshort20 2 years ago
I guess the real question is, "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?"
Generally speaking though (like in the instances of the GTO and G8) Holden's models have been out for a few years prior to introduction in the States.
I think that this is kind of a product testing method for GM? Essentially, they are using the Australian car market as a giant guinea pig!
moaski 2 years ago
Or GM HQ are just starting to realise that tucked away in a fay, far away land there are engineers who actually know how to make good cars and not the shit they've been pumping out for the last 30yrs which led to their downfall?
maybe that's it but I can't be sure ;P
semtex84 2 years ago
97 GP looks like no Australian made car.
semtex84 2 years ago 2
Yeah, but who cares.
Pontiac is a dinasour and the 97 GP was a piece of shit just like 90% of GM crap.
Good riddance.
moaski 2 years ago
O_o
its EXACTLY like a holden ute but in my opinion GM should bring the lumina ute they sell to south africa HERE in the US as the EL CAMINO
WHO WOULDNT BUY THAT
jblackapple 2 years ago
The Lumina (VZ commodore) is a old model of the Sport truck (VE Commodore)...
MlTCHB 2 years ago
@moaski @moaski The only thing the Pontuiac Grand Prix had in common with the Holden Commodore (nearest Holden Equivalent) was its engine. The VT-VY Commodores (1997-2003) were all rear wheel drive, have V6 and V8 power, and were razor sharp on every detail by comparison. To say the VT is a clone of the Grand Prix is VERY wrong
Mechknight73 1 year ago

Dime a dozen here along with the similar Ford variant. Popular with builders, tradesman, farmers, sports crowd totting a couple of offroad bikes or towing a boat on the weekend and a trailer durring the week. In the days before the Japanese began building utes, Holden and Ford utes were it, faster and more comfortable than what came of Japan for a long time. Carry hay bails, tools, take the girlfriend to a posh night out, arrive in style, then back to being a workhorse the next day.
EnigmaNZ1 2 years ago
Too bad GM cancelled its plans for this car. Actually good thing, America doesn't need another SSR LOL.
MamboItalian5 2 years ago
Ahh but it's a ute!
8phatkat8 2 years ago
It's not cancelled though.
it's been held off for the moment to see what happens later on so it might come in 2010.
But with the US Gov taking over GM have to wait and see I guess.

You can thank Susan Docherty for putting the final nail in the Pontaic's Coffin. She and Fritz Henderson are two incompetent automotive executives who would be better off applying for a job at McDonald's!
Pookatube 2 years ago
kinda sad though, in my opinion I felt that Pontiac was coming back and building great cars like the G8 GXP, but oh well it seems like right when the momentum was building up for this brand they axed it
twenty514 2 years ago
I would buy it in a heart beat! Where I live, I don't need 4wd, but I do need a small pick up. So right now I own a 98 Firebird Formula for my speed and a 94 nissan pick up for my utility. This would combine the best of both worlds and I could consolidate my driveway herd.
As for looks, I think most guy's wives are fat and ugly, but that doesn't stop guys from marrying and even having sex with them. I think driving this car would be a little easier to justify than marrying a fat chick.

This "sport truck" is actually called the "Maloo" overseas.
jonasvalero 2 years ago
but the back is nice but it just doesnt go with the rest of the car which is the front, more like the front is sporty car and the back is sporty pickup but both together ,.... doesnt go
makalex23 2 years ago
Believe me it grows on you.Must be seen in the flesh to fully appreciate. The flagship is the MALOO...its a beast man..look it up..
falcon0351 2 years ago
i looked up the maloo, which is the Australian version of this truck(el camino) and it is a beast! yeah at first it looks kinda ugly but it starts to grow on you. at first i hated the g body(78-87) el camino and now i've owned a 85 el camino conquista for the last six years and although i only drive it on weekends it's by far the funnest car i ever owned.

Today's version of an El Camino...
So sad
6Satans6Servant6 2 years ago
It would be interesting if they put the v6 from the base camaro/ CTS in that as a base option, and then offered an LS3 as a GT. Yes its hideous but the el camino wasnt about looks.
Ej205scoob 2 years ago
i was hoping it would look kind of like el camino, but it reminds me more of a subaru outback/baja.
but it really is ugly, sad to say i was actually excited about the concept of a newer camino, but they let us down.
