Would I recommend the kit? Absolutely! Not only is it faster and easier for you, but you will probably save money in the long run because you will not be paying shipping to 20 different suppliers, nor will you be putting 500 miles on your car spending your weekends driving all over town looking for stuff. Yes, save yourself a lot of time and hassle and just get the kit.

As for the kayak, I spent a couple of months working on it, evenings mostly. I'd say it takes probably about 50 hours construction time. I wouldn't say it was "easy" but it wasn't terribly difficult. I think anybody with a few tools and a good working space can build one. I highly recommend it.
