Oh yes, I also decided on "amber shellac" to use on the faded oak cabinets. It is so faded in some areas, it actually looks like light gray. I couldn't find any at Home Depot either, but did find it in quarts at Lowe's. Bought a 1"x2" piece of oak to test the shellac and like the color very much. Was glad to hear you talk about it. Nice to know I have made one good choice anyway. Shop around, it may not be the brand you prefer, but it is out there. Thanks, Sharon
One more visible damage is front exterior Aluminum. Looks like someone backed trailer numerous times and jackniffed and dented it with big bad auto. Can I gently push this out from the inside. Has anyone ever done this successfully? I really don't want to tamper with the Aluminum and replace it. I watched you remove all those screws and nails on the DeVille and was very impressed. But I just don't have time for such extensive repairs. Can I repair with "bondo?" Thanks, Sharon
Only visible damage is interior front ceiling & under passengers side front window - both water damage. New white rubber was put on roof last year. All water tanks good and we put "antifreeze" in them last summer. Did find vinyl in sheet rolls (inexpensive) at Wal-Mart. Plan to glue it on Luan sheeting to replace ceiling. Hope that frame inside ceiling is not rotted. If not, repairs will be simple. Should I paint exterior with spray cans, or rented sprayer? Thanks, Sharon
"Should I paint exterior with spray cans, or rented sprayer?"
Well automobile paint sprayed on properly is the best way to go ofcourse. But I have trailers that have been painted with everything from brushes to rollers to spray-cans... It's up to you how good you want it to look...
I will be rebuilding a 1971 Terry 17 ft in a couple of weeks. First I have to get a Class III hitch installed on my 1996 Ford Aerostar van, then tow it home from 120 miles away. I did buy a complete set of "towing lights", as I haven't checked out the electricity yet. I am a an older lady who is planning on living in this trailer to avoid the high apartment rent in this area. I have viewed all your DeVille videos and am very encouraged about rebuilding mine. Keep posting, Sharon.
When you have a trailer that has the wood painted over do you bother to strip and refinish it? If so, that would make a great video. (seeing as that's what I'm dealing with now). :)
There is vinyl flooring now with an aluminum oxide wear layers and even some with silver embedded in them to stop mold and bacteria from growing, the upper grades will last a lifetime and are almost indestructable.
LOL not a problem there Hairy. In your case you may wish to wear a breather for demolition because of the possible rat turd stuff that you could breath. Not to mention lots of other types of living things that procreated in the pours of the wood over the years.
The last couple of days I have had to breath mold and bleach... mold and bleach... mold and bleach... yuk...
Man, I have got to say, these are great to watch. Gets right to the point. Great videos.

The Bulls Eye Amber Shellac seems to work the best so far that I have found.
Thanks for watching and I will keep up the videos. It just needs to cool down a bit here. It's just too hot out there to work on it now.

Bondo will work. Make sure the surface is clean and raw aluminum...
Better to push it out from the inside and you would need someone on the outside holding a flat surface against it for you to push against...

I have just painted the wood that has been painted. Never tried taking it down to bare again. Only had one like that so far.

I really look forward to your trailer videos. Keep it up. You should start a web page with a forum.

Yes and expensive as well..

Yeah I know. I sell it for a living. When I seen ya taking up the old stuff I went into selling mode:) Force of habit.

Can I get a discount? We are always looking for RETRO looking stuff. Like Sputnik designs or boomerang design... Got anything like that?

Just a thought. Now, you know your business far, far better than me, but shouldn't you be wearing some respiratory protection? Asbestos, mould, etc.?

I have to think about this question before I answer it...

OK I thought about it...
I have been breathing this stuff my whole adult life. Kinda late for masks now...
mobiltec 3 years ago
OK. Sorry--I wasn't trying to be your mother. I was just curious because, as you know, I'm in a bit of a renovation of my own. Thanks.
