@Murge42 it keeps him from damaging his fingers. your fingers will naturally spread apart the faster you play to give the fingers you're using more space to move, but that can stretch out your tendons and cause you to have carpal tunnel or tendinitis.So really it just allows him to play fast without his finger spreading apart. I also heard it can help balance out you hand so you more consistent picking, but I can't prove that.
