Can someone tell me what GMR stands for and where it is? A google maps link of the top & bottom of the hill would be super helpful!
I haven't boarded in 5+ years but want to get back into it. Last spot I remember bombing was the straight away on Los Trancos Rd in Portola Valley. It's just shy of 1mi and you can reach 40+ mph near the top. There was also a great adjacent residential road (Buck Meadow Dr.) that had some smooth road to practice on.
i don't mean to sound like i don't know what i'm doing cuz i've been boarding for a while now. but i dn't have a lot of money. i'd like to know do i have to keep dishing out cash for shoes or would learning to slide be of any value? is it a candidate for slowing down at these speeds? i can already slide, but not on my favorite DH board.
youre gonna get hit by a car or a motorcycle speeding around the corner. Dont cross the the double yellow on a blind turn or you can have a bad accident one day. I ride my motorcycle up there all the time and you wont catch me crossing the yellow on a blid turn, thats just asking for it.
the guy filming is on a bike, it's his brakes that are squeaking. That's why you see him slowing down when you hear it. You can also hear him shift a few times.
damn, scary wobble at 1:28, i'd probably be shitting bricks during that...
how fast do you think you were going at 2:59 when you footbraked? i'm really new to DH, never done GMR before... just curious about all of this. i want to make sure i can stop alright and that i don't smash into oncoming cars around blind corners
excellent video. where is this hill. I'm from Michigan and dream of long rides like that. I've already gps'd at 35 but only on piddly ass hills that are done in a minute or so. Usually straightaways.
GMR aka glendora mountain road is in los angeles area. its been closed off from public use since forever i think... theres usually a lot of cars mountain racing up there tho.
Top speed is in low 40's. Average speed for most runs is around 30-35mph. If this run was truely 3.5 miles in 6.15 min., then that distance divided by the (6.15min/60min)hrs. gives an average of just over 34mph. I have heard the grade is between 4-7%.
GMR was closed off to cars for a while because of construction on the road and fires. The guy following behind was probably on a bike. Thats why you could hear brakes.
Man that looked like fun. When I weighed 130 at 16 used to do that alot in Puerto Rico. There a shit load of hills there. I also used to do that on my modified 13 speed Shimano race bike. I'm 240 now so I got alot riding here. I miss those days.
There are some ruts in the road from tracked equipment that ran up the road during one of the road repairs. They are hard to see and they can take you down if you hit them when leaning hard.
Gate is there but locking it is not a good idea. I still ride the open road in a secretive fashion every now and then, but in a more conservative fashion. Get in touch if you are in town and want to ride.
haha dude that was soooo chill. I would totally do that if I can just block out all the negative thoughts of crashings and controling wobbles. hehe am a big guy too so that would be intense for me, id have soooo much speed.
Where are u guys I want to do that!!!! Please tell me!!!!!

Unless that road is closed, riding into the other lane is a game of Russian Roulette. What happens if you hit a nice gravel patch?
ferrisnox 3 years ago
The road was closed to motor vehicles when this was filmed. Walking the road insures that we are aware of the road conditions.

umulius71 4 years ago
Is it true most of the wobbling is foot positioning, if youre in tune with the board..
it's how it is with me, but I dont get good hills like that, but semi good runs.
MaxxSullivan666 4 years ago
When you see me wobble a bit it is from hitting ruts in the road. They ran a tracked vehicle up the road and left impressions in parts of the road.
