Some of the perceived colorlessness is due to recording values. His approach is a bit more lyrical than Berman's more dramatic one, too, which a lover of bravura will find somewhat disappointing. I don't personally find this to be an indightment of the interpretation. After all, some would find Berman's heavy-handed. I like them both, personally. They both give interesting and contrasting ideas about how to approach this piece.
Aldo Ciccolini's 'Annees' was the first complete performance of this masterpiece which I heard and is still one of my absolute favourites. Amazing interpretation! Thank you for sharing it with us!
Not too fast, absolutely not. It's not a little rain... :)
Ciccolini has recorded all of the Années de Pélerinage, and the other pieces are as great as this one. If you can listen, then go, that's absolutely awesome.
His playing is very clear and even. The only other recording I have heard of Ciccolini is him playing La Campanella, which is pretty good. Great player!
It's the first time that I've listened to Ciccolini playing Liszt!! I used to find Ciccolini's recordings playing especially works by Satie, Debussy and some pieces by Brahms. However It's great to find to other interesting interpretations! Thank you for posting It!!!!!!!!
Although Ciccolini puts in some interesting rhetorical pauses, Berman's performance is the best overall.

The tempo notation is presto furioso. I don't think anyone could take it too fast.
