the tone is very harsh when i record my line 6 spider iv 30 watt with the 57! even when i lower the treble, mids, and distortion, the tone is very crunchy and unpleasant to listen to. i have tried many different positions.
@ProjectBerklee Frannkly I do not like the 57 recording tone as well. I prefer the setup you see in the video or also try a condenser mike placed 30 degress away from the cone at the distance of 6 fingers.
great video! but when ever i mic my amp ( ihave a fender super camp xd and i use a mosfet fultone distortion pedel with it) i always wind up with a hissing like sound and its hard to get rid of with just eq, do you have any suggestions? btw i use one sm57 maybe an inch or two away from the cone
If I had a cabinet head, and plugged it into the mixer from where it should go to the amp speaker, will this give me the best sound? I wanted to be able to use high gain and whatnot to get great saturation but also wanted it to not scream bloody murder, for the most part.
@kinkyjew672 We used Cubase SX, you should try the link you mentioned if it works or not it depends from many fctors like matching the various devices impedances. What you describe is called "reamping". Be careful anyway.
@kinkyjew672 First of all, your head should have a separate EMULATED LINE OUT(I have a marshall head) port for RECORDING DIRECTLY into the mixing board. DO NOT EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMASTANCES CONNECT the speaker out port to a recording device! The emulated line out ports are DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY for recording DIRECTLY.
Point number to two: if you actually DO record directly, make sure(and I think this applies for all head-cab amps) that you always hook up your speakers to create a LOAD.
@kinkyjew672 Otherwise you`ll end up buying a new head :) Amp heads are tricky bastards and you should be informed accordingly lol. You can turn down the volume so that your amp doesn`t emit any sound(it will still be heard through the board, because the preamp of your head just connects to the board, bypassing the POWER AMPLIFIER. They are the 2 different components of your HEAD).
Point number three: NEVER, EVER EVER use a GUITAR(aka INSTRUMENT cable) to connect your head with the cabinet.
@kinkyjew672 The instrument cables have a VERY high resistance, because the signal traveling from your guitar to the amp is very weak.
Now, when the signal travels from the head to the speakers-it`s a totally different ballgame-the resistance of the cable must be low: the signal is strong and it`ll just fry the cable if it`s high. People reported having their cables melted lol.
I would also advise you to research on the subject of Direct Box/Reamp recording to get more educated on the subject.
@azncoolz My income`s fine with excellent future prospects, otherwise I would actually have a job lol in the general sense of the word. It`s not music-related, though, the income. As to guitar recording-it`s more of what people call a hobby. If you can actually do what you like(even if it doesn`t pay anything) without starving to death for months on end, by all means-have at it! :) Why must I work for pennies to satisfy someone else`s private interest was always beyond my comprehension.
@ThaThing1337x that's what i'm thinking. I mean..i play guitar alot w/ my headphones plugged into the amp..and it makes it sound so much smoother and cleaner.
@ThaThing1337x yeah the length is a problem. I've got some bose though and the length is crazy long. But nope, I'd like to know how also..wanting to start recording stuff.
@ThaThing1337x There are tons of forums and websites on the subject. If you would like a HUUUUGE amount of info on recording just about anything-from keyboards, virtual instruments and drums-visit tweakheadz. com.
As to why people mic amps-you get the full acoustic goodness in the sound you record, because recording directly bypasses your speakers and your cabinet, which, in turn, to put it succinctly-sounds like thiiiit :) Believe me-I`ve been there, for lack of experience.
I have noticed that the amp sound worse through earphones and a cable. Yet I haven't compared it to a mic, but I think it must sound way better than a lame cable.
@ThaThing1337x Check out my other replies to other users about the importance of using PROPER cables! That can be a killer too-especially for your equipment, not to mention the sound.
@ThaThing1337x you can record it from the cable but will have no stereo image. The way you mic effects your stereo image more than any other factor. Once the stereo image is ruined its hard to correct it.
is that easy drummer? sounds really good to me. nice one guys

@ProjectBerklee
Try pointing the mic off axis from the speaker (I know this sounds weird)
The sound will be dull but you can add back treble with EQ to give it Air without the harsh top end of the cabinet
jack0sinclair 6 months ago
@ProjectBerklee It's cause solid state amps are (frankly) pretty crap for recording

Isn't it better to record directly from the amp with a cable?
I have no clue, so an answer would be appreciated.

You do?
I perfer playing without them, since the cable to the headphones is so short... but yes, the sound is better.
Anyways, have you ever tried recording that way? I'd love to learn how people do it, since I consider start covering songs and stuff (:

I had a double ended cable which I could put in my amp and connect to my PC, but now I can't find it XC.

@ThaThing1337x NO it's definitely better with a mic unless you have very very good plugins like on Protools
