  • You have been sucked in,,,,

    Energy saver bulbs contain Mercury...

    watch?v=j3v4UPofNZc&NR=1

You have 21 energy saver bulbs....???? I have ONE light bulb in my lounge, and ONE in the kitchen....

    You are wasting power anyway.

  • i also wana point out that ur not saving much what u consider that a lot of ppl leave the lights on when not in the room, and when ur lighting company raises ur light bill. Global warming is not real. its a scam. I have hundreds of boxes of incandescents which give off much nicer light and they're 100% dimmable. So the hell with u and ur pledge. its all a SCAM.

  • Good video you have done a great thing to change all of those lights out, that is a big deal.I too have only CFLs in my home and they work better than the old bulb. I cant wait until the ban begins on old bulbs than we can all start being green....and saving some green too.

  • can you grow plants with these?

  • Your plead to pollute the landfills with mercury. Read how to dispose of the bulbs. Do you seriously thing people will follow directions as they say. There HAZARDOUS

  • The fact that coal-fired power stations contain mercury in their flue gases is no justification for imposing yet more mercury pollution on the world.

5mg or 25mg, they are both toxic to children.

The TLV (Threshold Limit Value) for mercury is 25 micrograms per cubic metre, so even 5mg would render toxic some 200 cubic metres of air.

I speak as a chartered physicist who worked on mercury pollution at ICI for over 8 years.

  • Then as a physicist, you should bloody well know that 4mg is not 20mg - errors of that magnitude don't fly in any physics I'm aware of. And the idea that somehow the mercury emitted from power plants (not to mention all the other toxins) is not finding its way into the air the kids breathe, the water they drink, the fish and vegetable crops they eat is naive in the extreme.

  • You just fell for this because you are gullible to the corporations and corporate paid scientists who push this on you instead of thinking for yourself. If there is any lightbulb idea that is above your head its the one you didnt endorse in this video, THE SUN.

  • I can't think of a better way of poisoning an entire generation.

Every year in the US, take 12 tons of volatile, highly toxic metal mercury, divide it into millions of tiny fragile packages (CFL bulbs) and distribute them to the general population, without any warning of danger to life.

There is no way that 12 tons of mercury can be recovered at the end of the bulbs life.

The deadly mercury will accumulate in the bones, brain & vital organs of the whole population and their children.

  • Oh no!!! Twelve tons? Really? I'm kind of thick where math is concerned - is that more, or less than the fifty tons of mercury (which doesn't include all of the other particulates, sulfur compounds and radioactives) you get from coal-fired plants?

  • Your cat is beautiful.

  • Retired AFGUY well you know what, as far as the environment is concerned horses are far more clean than motorcars.

  • Yes lithium batteries are toxic as it is to the environment RetiredRFguy, so lets push it just a little further with mercury filled CFLs that could easily taint the environment once broken on the way to the landfill, its "harmless" anyways....Please

  • "Please" yourself. You seem to think generating electricity has no environmental impact. I guess those coal-fired plants are belching out pure fresh alpine air? The mining, processing, distribution, consumption and disposal of coal and nuclear fuel has a far greater environmental impact so you can power your incandescent bulbs than even improperly disposed of CFLs cause.

  • I seem to think these things? Could you please cite where I said that? So because I question and criticize the solution you support, you automatically assume I think generating electricity through the ways you have mentioned (coal and nuclear) has no environmental impact. By the way, I like how you failed to mention simple solar power, wind power and hyrdo power, which i strictly support. No coal supported theories, no nuclear supported theories and none of your mercury supported theories!

  • Coal and nuclear aren't "theories", they are the reality of how the vast majority of power is currently, and will, for the next couple of decades at least, be generated. I am a solar proponent, to the extent of having made two solar ovens - but I can travel 400 miles in any direction from here and not find a single major solar, wind, hydro or geothermal installation. So I say again - CFLs are less toxic environmentally than incandescents are.

  • Why do you put negative points on the truth, you've been sucked into the whole GREEN movement scam. Wanna save the environment? Don't listen to what corporate commercials or special interest politicians tell you. CFLs have mercury inside of them, research it for yourself.

  • Let me try some numbers:

The average household has 50 light bulbs, with an average life of 10 years. Each bulb contains 20mg of mercury, so the mercury waste from one household is 1 gram every decade. With a toxic TLV of 25 microgrammes per cubic metre, that is potentially 40,000 cubic metres of toxic mercury vapour.

There are 30 million households in the UK alone, so that represents 30 metric tonnes of mercury released every decade, enough to pollute over 1000 cubic kilometres per decade.

  • How about some numbers that you didn't pull out of your ass. Average mercury content in a CFL is 4mg - not the 20 mg you claim. And how does mercury get into the environment, anyway? About 40% comes from coal power plants. Even you you disposed of your dead CFLs by smashing them in the street, you'd still reduce environmental mercury by 36%. And mercury isn't the only environmental contaminant released by coal plants. People need to stop getting their science from 'The Sun' and 'The Mirror'.

  • No thanks. I'm not interested in creating more polution with these new bulbs. Besides the light they give out is horrible.

  • You are so full of the BS being passed around. These are miniature versions of the same flourescent lamps that have been around forever, invented in 1909 - 28 yrs after Edison's bulb. The mercury scare is being pushed by the power companies and others that will lose by people going to these - mercury has been in flourescents since they were invented and is such a tiny amount. All this resistance to change is as bad as the people that protested motorcars in favor of horses.

  • @RetiredAFGuy you're another person whos been scamed by all these "GREEN PEOPLE" . Or maybe, u work for the green police. if CFLs are so good, why not ENCOURAGE us to save energy rather than FORCING it on us? u know why?? cuz they know that most ppl LIKE ME still prefer edison bulbs over these depressing cfls. Last time i checked, I pay for my light bill, so i will decide what bulbs to use. This is another excuse of congress wanting to get into everyones business.

  • If you want to save energy, live in a smaller house. Use less hot water. Take the bus. Don't use a dryer for your clothes.

  • The commercials dont tell you one thing. The new CFLs use less watts, yes, so they use less energy, but they have a much bigger environmental impact. normal bulbs are just glass and a tiny piece of metal wire.

These compacts require a computer chip inside and the inside of the bulbs are coated with toxic substances.

  • Normal bulb is glass, tungsten and a phospor coating. CFL is the same but with a tiny drop of mercury, a tiny version of the commonplace flourescents. Nothing to be afraid of. Are people still using carbon and manganese dry cells because lithium batteries have to be recycled? Nope you cant find the old dry cells and almost everything around uses rechargable lithium cells that have to be recycled and specially handled if damaged. Come on people get off the propaganda!
