Much of the wealth of that 1% was earned by the masses, but never went to their paychecks. I don't believe in punnishing the wealthy. But there was a time when they paid a far bigger percentage in fed tax, yet we had a middle class second to none. The sky didn't fall, and we didn't depend on trickledown for prosperity. We are a republic. We need balance again, not plutocracy.

Respectfully, these are scare tactics for the most part. Look at the economy after Clinton raised taxes (shortly after Bush 41 raised taxes). We still had a great economy. Yet we have bountiful tax cuts the last decade and virtualy ZERO job creation with a destroyed surplus.

We were on a path to sustainability, with a surplus by the end of the '90's. The dollar was strong. Deregulation (starting with Clinton) causing massive boom/ bust bubbles coupled with deficit causing tax cuts are the main reasons we are here. (oh, yea, how bout those wars?) By all accounts things would be worse if repubs were in power: they want MORE deregulation and MASSIVE cuts for the top 5%.

maulhoik Of course government has an incredibly important role to play. Its role is to protect us, it is in constitution, as well as regulating business (keeping business flow regular). If you notice each regulation did nothing but gave mega corps. a leg up in competition. It is not governments role however to cater to a major corporation, nor it is governments role to run a corporation. And as far as taxes, how is taxing more will help the economy? Government has little to do with economy.

Look at the Clinton Admin: taxes were raised and the deficit was reduced after Reagan's massive deficits and tax cuts. That's very generalizing, I know. But, historicaly, deficits have been smaller under democrats than republicans. Ike (who's not liked by conservatives) was the last fiscaly responsible republican (budget surplus). Whatever our philosophies are, niether of us like runaway spending. It's too early to tell the long term actions of Obama, but he can't blame the last admin forever.
