transit buses are NOT required by law to stop at railway crossings whether or not the crossing is activated, school buses are - but NOT transit or motor coaches !
@northlanderdude The Barrie tracks are not abandoned, they are just used infrequently... a train goes by Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays on the lines that GO Transit doesn't use.
@rolls283 There are some tracks that ARE abandoned. The only one I'm quite certain about is the old HNW main line that used to extend to Bayfield & Sophia in 1877 (right through what is now called Queen's Park) Remaining trackage runs north from the BCRR line (used to run south as well) alongside Lorena ending somewhere near John Street. I walked the line. Trees grow right through the tracks. There hasn't been a train in years. Otherwise it would show. Yet the bus drivers say they have to stop
@UglySean yes yes i totally forgot about those.. the ones that split in between Patterson Road and Anne Street, that cross over Tiffin Street and continue to John Street...! That is true, those have been abandoned for several years, likely since the good ol' days when CN ran on the tracks!

@rolls283 okay, but it doesn't make sense for them to do so as most of the tracks in Barrie with the exception of the Barrie GO line are abandoned.
and again, it is even written in the MTO handbook that they are NOT required to do so ! I wouldn't !
the only time a transit bus has to stop at a crossing is when there are no lights, gates or cross buck !
only school buses are required to stop at ALL railway crossings.
