My Scottish terrier always did eat grass and I was not too concerned, she was on a good holistic diet and some raw meat, looked wonderful but died of lymphoma with a tumor on the intestine, she was only 5 and looking back she was eating a lot of grass, more than usual just before she passed, I will worry now with any other dog if I see them behave in that manner. The lymphoma, I read could be due to inbreeding as the Scottish terriers have a small gene pool.
Does your commentary and answers also apply to cats? After my cat eats grass, she has never thrown-up. Is this normal? Thank you for taking the time to respond to my inquiries. God bless and keep up the good work!
Dogs have a relatively short foregut and a short, smooth, unsacculated colon. Thus, food passes through quickly. Vegetable and plant matter, however, needs time to sit and ferment. This equates to longer, sacculated colons, larger and longer small intestines. Dogs have none of these, but have the shorter foregut and hindgut consistent with carnivorous animals. This is why plant matter comes out the same way it came in; there was no time for it to be broken down and digested.
Dogs do not have the kinds of friendly bacteria that break down cellulose and starch for them. As a result, most of the nutrients contained in plant matter—even preprocessed plant matter—are unavailable to dogs. Dogs and wolves may occasionally graze on grass, usually for digestion.
I've only ever heard that dogs eat grass to make themselves puke. I was scared that my dogs were ill, eating grass almost everytime they go into the backyard. However, they're never frantic. They just casually graze and don't vomit after. Phew. Now it's cute, not creepy.

My dog isn't selective at all, when we walk him we have to keep him away from all plants, he nibbles on all leaves/varieties, not so much grass. He also eats crickets/grasshoppers, etc. if we let him, sometimes when we walk him at night he will see something crawling on the ground, he'll play with it, sniff it, and he'll try to taste it, he chewed up a preying mantis one time it was nasty. He's def a scavenger dog, but he also likes to work, he's mostly chihuahua and has some terrier line mixed
I would like to know what his opinion is about B-17 (or whatever you want to call it) too. I have the movie A World Without Cancer and the information is pretty convincing.
Is he by a river he don't, he drinks the water of course. However, is he in a forest and have been running for some time he gets thirsty and looks for grass that is wet from some rain and eats it or licks it. That's it! Who wouldn't look for water when he is thirsty, I would, but I can go a to a Seven Eleven and get a juice, he can't! And he chose the long green grass because most water is on them, it is simple!
Good information. I had always suspected this because so many people have wolf hybrids here. The presenter came across well. I couldn't help noticing she has some of the same professional mannerisms as Dr. Mercola. There must be some common ingredients to success.
My dog doesn't really eat grass, unless i pick a blade from my lawn, then she snatches it out of my hand. She only eats the grass that i selectively pick.
I like this. I've seen dogs chew up the bark of a willow tree. Apparently willow bark is anti inflamatory, and this dog I saw doing it has a slight case of arthritis. Amazing.
thanks.much help

my dogs are turning my lawn into a golf course full of divots. They pull up the roots, dirt and all. I could see them eating grass but dirt too?

My dog eats grass because he is thirsty simply.

now can you tell me why my dogs like to eat what the cat leaves in the litter box? :S
lejink 2 years ago
it's a vitamin deficiency. you need to feed 'em a high quality for nutrious food, or start him/her on supplements.

My Dog eats grass when his liver is out of whack, he never throws it up, all grasses are a diuretic, so he does this to help cleanse the liver.
RashtraVishnu 2 years ago
did your dog tell you that?
forealXXX 2 years ago
no, dogs can't talk
