How to Reformat PDF into Kindle .PRC for Easier Reading (MobiPocket)

I have a problem. Please help. When i convert the book some of the words are missing. Should i choose some encryption or what?

@InspiRAWtion Is most of the text visible? What text is missing? conversion from PDF is tricky mainly because a PDF is an end-product -- it is not meant to be converted into anything. So you will have issues. You may want to convert it into epub and then use SIGIL to correct issues or missing text that you see so you can view the file.

Great tutorial, thanks! If I wanted a cover image, how would I include it? I have downloaded a couple different books that include cover images with the .pdf but don't know how to go about it.

@bnbmgrdnr converting doesn't always bring in the images -- just the text. If you are missing the cover, then extract the cover from the original PDF using photoshop, and replace it into the file.

I lose all my images on conversion from pdf to prc using Mobi. Is there any way to get them?

@swatisinha1980 Not all images get pulled in from the conversion, this may be due to the encryption on the PDF which does not allow it. You may have to open the original PDF in a Photoshop like program and extract them. Then convert the PDF to epub and replace the missing images.

Hi, I have used this soft ware. Thanks for the tutorial. I am having problem with diacritics. When I convert it it comes as a funny character. Any solution you may know of. I have all those font installed in my PC already, just cant understand why it does not work for me. Thanks in advance.

When I open the .PRC file in my kindle it says "This file is registered to a different user, please delete this file and download again from the Kindle store."

@UnrulyGuides It was saying this for a pdf that I had converted, then added to the Kindle. I have, within ten minutes, figured out why it did this. I had, before watching this video, changed the setting to no encryption. After changing it back to the security encryption, with no password and no DRM, I haven't noticed any problems with the program.

The Firefox document is an html file. But I think I have it solved. It turns out it was the file that said palm application. When I looked at the properties of the file it was a .prc file. Not sure why it came up saying it was a palm, but this might help someone else who has the same problem. Thanks for the help.

I tried what you said and I get a file for a palm application, the .opf file, a firefox document, an .xml document and some portable network graphic image files. There is no .prc file. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

There is a confusion in the video calling the correct file an AZW -- it's not. In Mobipocket is is listed in "My Publications" folder as a ".PRC" file. Make sure you change the pull-down menu to "All Files" when you look inside the "My Publications" folder so you can see all the files. Otherwise, you'll see just one called "ebook publications" or .opf.

The .PRC file icon is the blue book shape with the lowercase "a" on it.

@AmericanPowerBase This conversion is for reading purposes. It isn't foolproof as PDF is a coded page, and you are converting from one code to another - PDF to MOBI or EPUB. The only want o get it perfect is to start from an original Word file, or to convert to text (TXT), fix the errors and then convert to PRC (MOBI). -- Suzanne

I scanned a book into a PDF and when I tried to convert it, the prc on the kindle looks like an image (whereas Im unable to change the fonts, etc when viewing it on the kindle.) Any suggestions on making the PDF not an imagew?...btw I also tried to convert into a html, doc and text. Text was a blank page, html and doc just had the scanned doc in an image form as well...

@mistresschanger If you scanned the pages, then you created "images" of the pages (like a photograph), and calibre is treating the pages like an image. When scanning, you need to use an OCR, or optical character recognition software. This converts the page to actual characters. FYI: This does NOT work for protected .pdf files. I'm a student at the University of Phoenix and all of their text books are secure .pdf files. It would make my life easier if this would work but unfortunately it does not.

@morrismak Hi Morris, at minute 1:52 you'll see a second field on the screen that says "Create publication in folder" and in Mobipocket it defaults to C:/users\"yourname"\Documents\­My Publications"

Or you can use the browse button to find the location on your computer where you want to put the final converted files (including AZW).

@morrismak - the final converted file you are looking for is not called "AZW" it's a ".PRC" file (the blue book icon with a lowercase "a" on it).

@BaxiBWFC Converting from PDF to MOBI (PRC) or EPUB isn't going to offer perfect results. PDF is a coded file from an original file (like InDesign or Word). When converting from one coding to another, there can & usually are, formatting issues. One way to remove the errors is to convert to TXT, go through the file & correct the errors in a Text Editor (or Word program), and then convert to MOBI (PRC). NOTE: Converting to TXT removes all formatting (italics, etc) - Suzanne
